Where to dispose of insurance card?

Hi everyone, how do you usually dispose of your inactive insurance card?
I'm asking because it has quite a bit of personal info on it..AHV number, date of birth, sex (just printed, and idk what else if you try to use a car reader)

....is it OK to just throw this in the bin?

Re: Where to dispose of insurance card?

PS: I'm asking this bcuz I saw this video at some point on how "easily" one can get away with falsifying documents from things that people throw in their trash (invoices, bank statements, ......swiss insurance cards? )..but this is from the UK.

just shred it into really tiny pieces and then bake the pieces into a cake then eat the cake.

Re: Where to dispose of insurance card?

when I was younger I was told to cut credit cards that are no longer valid into pieces. You can do that with scissors. I do this now as well with insurance cards and the likes. Yes all the pieces are still in the same bag. But you need to get to more trouble to make use of it.
Maybe it helps and if its just for piece of mind

I make sure to put some pieces in the main rubbish bin and the rest in another smaller bin. Since one will get emptied long before the other one you never have a complete cut up card in the rubbish bags.

The card contains sensitive identity data, including the equivalent of your social security number. https://www.edoeb.admin.ch/dam/edoeb...isch)%20v2.pdf

Better not to take the risk of data theft: https://www.generali.ch/en/blog/2018...1-datenraeuber

Cut it up with scissors vertically, to slice through any magnetic band, even hidden. Also cut through the chip if it visible. Dispose of the pieces in different bins.

Even humble looking hotel room key cards are likely to contain information such as name and credit card number (even if you don't pay by credit card, since they take your cc anyway for "deposit"). That's enough for a data thief. An AHV card is worth even more to them.

Are you both mad?
Don’t you know just how many people are lurking in the sewers waiting to catch all the bits of macerated cards and put them all back together again?

Re: Where to dispose of insurance card?

I've got a drawerful of expired cards of various descriptions.... when I finally find my "forever" home I intend to paper the downstair loo walls with 'em.

An urban myth.

Just use scissors to cut through the chip, the magnetic strip and the numbers.

Re: Where to dispose of insurance card?

There are shredders that do the job too. bonus: they also shred sensitive papers like old prescriptions and bank statements.

And you can still bake a cake and eat it if you want. It's like carrot cake, but with sensitive shredded information.

Thanks for the laughs today, EF.

Re: Where to dispose of insurance card?

If you are leaving Switzerland and you paid into the Swiss AHV state pension scheme then you might want to keep the card as proof of any pension claim when you reach retirement age.

Just use scissors to cut through the chip, the magnetic strip and the numbers.

Good catch, there are problems with other non-credit cards such as store cards and loyalty cards (including a well-known hotel chain), but normally not with hotel key cards.
