No words….

I’m waiting for a parcel, something I ordered from an Etsy seller in the US. I just checked the tracking to see where it’s up to… and I’m speechless!

(On another note, how can I show a picture from my phone in the post rather than a link??)

Re: No words….

I used to handle an online shop for an fashion designer in Edinburgh (we managed and updated the website as well). I sent a handbag to Austria and it went to Australia first. I only knew because the customer emailed me to ask where her bag was.

I also went to my local council office in Scotland and had to explain to them my OH was working in Switzerland. You're not allowed to go to a department directly, you have to go to a service desk and they contact the relevant department for you. The girl I was being handled by was about 20 and totally dense, she kept saying to the person on the other end of the phone "the wummin here says her man's working in Sweden" and every time she said it I was shouting out Switzerland. I got so exasperated I demanded to speak to the other person direct because there's no accounting for the terminally stupid

But you would think a postal company scanning an item, would get the city/country combo right, no?

This happened to me. Presumably someone realised that there isn't a Neuchâtel in Swaziland, and the packet eventually turned up.

Once had a 40 kilo delivery of Mini parts that decided to go the scenic route via Geneva, New York.
It would've been rather funny if the parts hadn't been needed urgently.

Re: No words….

Well there doesn’t seem to be a Zürich in Sweden, so I’m hoping it’s actually in Switzerland and that it’s a very strange error in the tracking system! Unfortunately I can only track it through Etsy’s website, and they give minimal info, they don’t give a link to the courier site (Pitney Bowes I believe).

Re: No words….

Maybe it got handled by a Spanish speaker, after all the language is anything but rare in the US.
Suecia and Suiza are spelled similarly, and their pronounciation is even more similar.

While you may think the IT should autocomplete the country correctly, remember you're talking about the US, AFAIA
four US cities there have the name Zurich, and god only knows what (possibly incorrect) data people input manually.

Can you guess which of these two is Spanish for Switzerland and which for Sweden?
(this is not a trick question)

There is also a village in The Netherlands called Zurich.

So when ordering stuff online from NL, be very wary of smart forms that auto-fill.

It's only similar to non-native Spanish speakers The words are different enough in LatinAmerican Spanish, and even more different in Spain.

Re: No words….

When I provide an address for internet deliveries I always use the postal code CH12xx, rather than just the four numbers. That definitely helps.

My S-I-L, on the other hand, likes to address things for us to “Suisse” rather than Switzerland. She doesn’t appreciate that every British Postal worker knows where Switzerland is, not as many have any idea where Suisse is.
