Unfortunately not. I lived in Ireland for years before moving to Switzerland and never found a single pub that served real ale from cask. The Alehouse in Zürich apparently has one hand pump but it shows as currently not in use on their website

An alehouse with no ale .... only in Switzerland. Doubtless full of fizzy rubbish.

There's a proper real ale place in Luzern ran by a Brit. https://www.realale.ch/

Their beer is generally very good. Looking at their current taps, I wouldn‘t expect 11 to 16 to be fizzy in the sense you mean (sours/gose and stouts/porter).

The evidence appears to be that „real ale“ as opposed to craft beer doesn‘t sell particularly well on the continent and apart from the odd exception like you‘ve linked (run as a hobby by a Brit), it isn‘t really brewed here. That combined with it not travelling well, will be why the hand pump rarely has a beer on.

Mental note taken. I’ll perhaps pay a visit next time I’m in Luzern.

I live in Lausanne with my husband and 2 children. I absolutely love it, but it is very expensive food wise. There is so much for children here in the Summer with beautiful swimming pools, lakeside areas, fantastic playgrounds. The school system is excellent and
we have tried both international school and state school. I would say our experience of state school was better. In the winter there is less to do, but we go for walks to the lake and take trips to Italy and France. The trains are fantastic and you can even go all the way to Venice on just one train. With hindsight.

No. Cask Ale is only brewed in the UK (and Ireland) and it doesn't travel, it's a live product and is unique. All beer served in Irish (and English type expat pubs anywhere in the world) is just industrial keg beer. If you want good beer in Switzerland, there are loads of fantastic craft breweries, but craft is NOT cask.

Tim Sutton (Brauerei Sutton) is a friend of mine and whilst I’m not a regular “ale”drinker, I’ve tried a few different brews and particularly like the pale ale. I think his beers are now sold in a couple of pubs in Luzern.

Thank you for this post. Just the sort of perspective I was looking for.

According to what I've read on this thread this might be the worst place to live in Switzerland, yet I find it to be cleaner and calmer than most of the cities where I lived in Ireland. I don't know how it fares against Bruxelles but I don't think this town is any worse in any aspect.

Things that I like: high paying jobs, low taxes, great local purchasing power, outstanding transportation network, high percentage of expats, having mountains, rivers and the lake at a stone's throw, the fact there isn't armed military in the train stations, weather, cultural events.

Things I don't like: I'll let you know if I find one

This is brilliant, thank you for your input. Really good and encouraging to know.
