Coins problems

Hi everyone:

The washing machine in my apartment only accepts 1 fr or 20 cents coins, as a result, I usually need to calculate the price carefully when I shop in supermarket, in order to get enough 1 fr and 20 cents coins. Does anyone know anyone know better method to get a large number of 1 fr coin?
Thanks

Re: Coins problems

The German word is Münzrollen. You can order then at many banks but I don't know if there are costs or minimum amounts for them.

They will cost the face value of the coins, if it’s your bank there will be no additional costs.

Any post office will give you coin rolls at face value. I always keep a few 50 rp. rolls for park machines.

afaik the post offers money change for free, i think because they are tasked as the universal payment provider. I bring my 5 cts coins there.

I wish they would do away with those coins, can’t be used in vending machines nobody wants them and likely cost more to produce than they are worth. Round everything to 10. And yes some would round up, but frankly who cares.

In some train stations, just next to the paid toilets, there are machines that change bills for coins.

I think they only exist so the likes of Migros can do better marketing.

My proposal would be to let Migros cover the extra costs of production and handling.

So tell us Tom, why is the US the only country that doesn’t print the coins value in numbers on the coin and uses nonsensical names for them? Penny ???, nickel???, dime (sorta makes sense in latin), quarter (a little better) and half dollar ?

Is it not a love of fractions, or a hatred of decimals to play?

Hi Bowlie

give any 5 rappen back to the cashier when you receive, do it nicely, say makes a hole in your pocket, or leave it by the side whilst packing.

They aren't - British pound coins still say "One" and "Two" on them, the only numerals are in the year.

And as for names, a large part of the British population still uses the pre-decimalisation names, others use local names for coins and various sizes of notes.

Genuine question, speaking as a Brit… what pre-decimalisation names are still in use? I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone referring to shillings or crowns except with direct reference to the past, e.g., “I used to get half a shilling a week pocket money when I was a child in the 50s”. I’ve certainly no idea what a shilling is in “modern” money.
