If you don't tell them, you're leaving them blind, and for all you know, it might be relevant to an ongoing inquiry.

I haven't advocated not telling them, nor have I advocated that there isn't a long-term benefit in telling them. You're missing the same text the other poster missed in my post. Please read the sentence til the very end about the police.

I have... "...may not have helped at all in the moment". Why not?

Re: Attempted burglary or just strange dude

For me, common decency is lacking, when a person doesn't apologise or back-down when they're wrong. Therefore, I'm not interested in a further, separate discussion about something else with you, or with the other poster, because neither of you have conceded your error. As I mentioned already on the thread, I don't see anyone on the board apologising, or backing down, when they're wrong, so wasn't expecting a revolution here either.

I've asked you to clarify what 'the error' is as you see it?

You've both alluded to me posting things I didn't post.

Holy awkward writing, Batman. I will give no apology because I made no error, and you either mistakenly used the wrong choice of words, or more likely genuinely do not seem to have grasped the implications of what you wrote in the context of the OP's situation. But it's ok, you don't have to admit that you are wrong for us to know you are wrong.

I'm sorry you had an experience that left you feeling shaken up.

This is the part you could do differently, if ever such a caller comes by again.

If I didn't recognise the man, and if I could hear the other neighbours coming down the stairs, I would not have opened the door, but would have waited for them to get there.

If none of us recognised the person, and if we (or just me if I were alone) decided to open the door, at all, (that's not a reflex, but a measured decision) it would have been just a crack with my foot/body against the door, enough for him to speak up and name the person he wanted to see, but there would've been no possibility for him to "just walk in".

It's a good thing that your building has a door that is usually locked from the outside. Make sure you lock your apartment from the inside, too. Hope you're safe!

Hmmm yes I should have done that, lesson learned!

I was a lurker, unable to join EF because I had a CH email address that I later learned was blocking my ability to sign up. I would periodically (over 2 years or so) try to sign up, with no response. Finally a mod fixed that.

I also remember with fondness the milano guy who posted such gorgeous recipes!
