Dr. before your name

Hi,

Is it a norm (recommended?) as some people say, to put Dr. before your name in official/not-so-official communications and in places like your mailbox and doorbell? I heard it is so, specially in German-speaking Switzerland :-/

I have a PhD (obviously. That's why there is the question ), and I have seen some other friends do this, but not anyone else who is actually Swiss German :-/

Re: Dr. before your name

I've not seen it much here, it also always struck me as slightly pretentious. Then again I don't have such credentials so I might just be jealous...

On another note, two friends of mine were living in a posh part of Amsterdam with the mailboxes all doctor doctor doctor. As one of their last names was Lord, they had their mailbox marked "Lord Wilson".

To me also it looks pretentious and I have the credentials , but it may as well be a cultural thing :-/

I don't use the title because it seems pretentious, and if I had it on my mailbox it would invite anyone with an urgent medical condition to actually think I was a medical doctor

Do sticky fingers count as a medical condition? I wonder if a person is casing a place do they think there's potentially higher value items at the doctors?

If someone sends a letter to "Dr. Higgs" and you don't have "Dr." on your mailbox it won't get delivered.

They would be very disappointed, the most expensive thing I own is my iPhone and I don't tend to leave home without it

Re: Dr. before your name

I have a whole variety of titles and middle names as well as mis-spellings of my actual name, some of them legitimate and others less so. I use them when signing up for things.

It makes it easier to work out who is selling my data.

You worked very hard to obtain your PhD, you are entitled to take this small pleasure by making it visible.

Maybe where you are, but we regularly get stuff where the name isn't quite right.

Either you've got a pHD or you don't know many. I guess it depends on the subject.

Re: Dr. before your name

Well, if you feel you need the upgrading of your person or if it was really difficult for you to achieve the title and you want a feeling of "it might as well have been worth all the hassle" you should stick it everywhere you can.

I've not seen it on door-bells except those of actual medical doctor's practices (which makes it helpful to find them).
It should definitely be mentioned on any professional papers (applications etc).

Some people insist that anybody would mention the Dr. when ever addressing them "grüetzi Herr Doktor Meier", others keep telling you to please refrain from exactly that. You can make your choice.

AfaIk one can make the most of a Doctor's title in Austria.

You didn't get the joke. Besides, that Dr. title must be brand new?

My husband gets lots of mail addressed to Dr. Belgianmum and it all gets delivered despite us not having Dr. on the letter box.

Landers, I was going to explain it with some shroedinger's cat jokes but I better not , it might get way too confusing .
