British Cheese Shop Zürich

Does anyone know what happened to Grumpy’s Cheese shop after he left?

I just did a search and found https://britishcheese.ch/ but all it says us website under development.

Actually I was looking to source some scones, which I had gotten from Grumpy in the past. Any suggestions?

Re: British Cheese Shop Zürich

Grumpy has sold the business and moved to The Netherlands. The double whammy of having business scuppered by the pandemic, plus after Jan 2021 cheese imports from the UK are subject to phytosanitary checks which means the supply chain was severely disrupted - took its toll, I believe.

The stall is still going, but certainly not the variety of cheese they had pre-Brexit. Sadly, there was no Godminster the last time I was there :-(. Other products are there - beer, pickles, HP sauce. I did not look for scones or clotted cream, though.

Grumpy still posts on here once every Preston Guild.

Cheers,
Nick

I think they changed the name to British Cheese Deli. Good reminder to go take a look.

Re: British Cheese Shop Zürich

The new owners are working on a new web shop, hopefully it'll be ready soon. My scones used to be sold at Jim's British Supermarket in Gland, have a word with them to see if they still have any.

But I'll post a link once the new web shop is up and running.

Re: British Cheese Shop Zürich

They still have scones, as well as other British (& "allied") groceries.
I grabbed a pack of Lincolnshire sausages from there yesterday ... they're thawing now, I plan to cook and eat them tonight.
A few of the old staff members are still working there, a couple have chosen to move on to other jobs, and there are some new staff as well. Friendly faces, and you'll occasionally spot a regular customer from GG's days. The current covid rules make that far less likely, sadly, as does GG's absence.

Bought some scones before Xmas from the Cheese Shop and was so disappointed by the product - maybe we were just unlucky but they were dry & tasteless. Thus I started investigating how to make my own. Some research led to me a Jamie Oliver recipe - surprisingly simple & cost effective to make and you can add lots of dried fruit options plus freeze them too. Just add jam & clotted cream from COOP in Baar

Have they changed the recipe? Last time I picked up coop clotted cream, there was "butter" listed in the ingredients...

Wait, what? Clotted cream is just cream ... clotted ... you don't add anything to it, except gentle heat over a long time!

It's not clotted cream, it's normal cream thickened with butter. They even say on the label what the process of making clotted cream is (scolding) then have the cheek to do something totally different but still call it "clotted" The reason real English clotted cream is so expensive in CH is it's one of the few products I imported that had duty on it (and pretty high too). The others being potato and apple products. Hence crisps and cider are also expensive.

You should have let me know, you would have got a fresh pack in the post for free. I sold over 2000 every month so they are certainly very popular, it could be with the Xmas rush and postal delays your pack was towards the end of it's 1 week shelf life.

Correct - which is why the coop was not clotted crea, and why I asked if they've now corrected the recipe

I seem to remember they had a small bar the one time I dropped by. I resolved to go back sometime and have a beer but never did. Is the bar still operating?

Yup, the bar is still running. It's a small bar but there are public tables within the market where you can enjoy drinks and food from any of the shops. And my own recipe Prince of Ales YPA is still on tap most of the time.
