Car hire rates through the roof in Geneva

I rented a car in Geneva from 13th to 17th July for 430 euros

Last week I got a quote for 24th July to 7th August, the cheapest is over 1000 euro

Today getting a quote from 31th July to 7th August, the cheapest is over 1000 euro

WTF, will take a taxi as we have my wife's car at our French home.

Re: Car hire rates through the roof in Geneva

Happens in a lot of countries, car rental companies sold their fleet during corona times to get cash.

The first 2 week price was slightly cheaper than normal, only booked a week in advance & got upgraded as they only had larger cars. The rental garage had far more cars than at any time in the winter season.

There are certainly better offers, yet it may be a decoy:
https://www.rentalcars.com/package/d...1eee/641720551 (the link is temporary, it will expire in an hour or so). In case it matters, it is a stick shift offer, an automatic transmission frequently costs unreasonably more in Europe.

Re: Car hire rates through the roof in Geneva

Prices here in London are also astronomical. I was looking at the first two weeks of August and the cheapest I’m getting is £600. Even in high season I usually manage to get something for around £100 - 150 wk (economy) with Eurocar or similar. When you see Enterprise quoting £1400 for a Corsa for 14 days you know they have zero cars and that’s probably the price to ship one down from Glasgow or something.

I have seen cheaper on the French side, however no vignette & a pain to get the car back.

I just had a look and I can see Dollar/Thrifty doing an economy car for €573 from GVA (Swiss side) for the dates you mentioned. If you look at the top row of the screengrab, as soon as you go to a compact (Ford Focus size) the price shoots up.

Not really. You just take the next exit off the A1, Turn left, through the tunnel, cross the frontier, sharp left and 2 minutes later you are there.

I mentioned this on another thread back in the spring. It's insane how they've blown up, normally I would book car rental as an afterthought, now it's worth looking well up front for the best prices. Someone mentioned that this is due to many car rentals having sold most of their fleets in order to remain solvent throughout the lockdowns.

I was only reading the other day that trucks parked at the beaches in Hawaii were causing some suspicion. Turns out they were just regular beach goers that had rented a truck due to there being no cars to available!

None of you reading the news? There is a rental car shortage all over Europe... because the operators expected a slow year and were surprised about how fast covid restrictions were lifted:

Prices in Geneva were cheaper than normal in December, January, February & the beginning of July hence my surprise.

Law of supply and demand. Low supply, higher than expected demand = money in the bank.

December-February: A lot less tourists flying into Geneva and renting cars for their ski trip. Even less business traveller.

Juli: I assume the squeeze is starting just now. However, I think its just the large major companies who try to rob you like this. I just entered your dates for GVA into a rental car comparison website and can get a compact from 608 EUR, mid sized sedan (Insignia or similar) for 731 EUR.

I used check24.de

Don't take the first exit for Geneva but the next one for 'Genève Vallard'. Customs in not on a motorway so they won't make you buy a vignette. In a few km there's a left turn for the airport and it's signposted thereafter.

I’d avoid crossing Geneva. Stay on the A40 to the A41/A1. Longer but quicker particularly at rush hours.

I'd recommend a helicopter, avoids most traffic and gets you directly to the airport.
