Getting a second license plate

Hoping to activate the EF HiveMind.
I have two cars but a single license plate.
I will have some guests coming over. I wanted to check if they could drive the second car instead of renting a car. Anyone has done that and how do I go about it? I assume I will need a second set of plates and also mention it to my Insurance company.

Re: Getting a second license plate

When you have one plate for two cars, you essentially pay the road tax and the insurance for the more expensive car. If you want a second license plate, I believe you have to pay the insurance and the road tax for the second car as well so you could be nearly doubling your expenses.

No you need to get new plates for the second car or temporary day plates.

Wouldn't the question rather be whether my foreign visitor is allowed to drive my car? We used to do this all the time but they changed so much over the years.

I looked for an answer but didn't even find one. ASitUS is becoming missed badly.

I don't see the issue if they have a license. If an EU resident they should not take it over the border unless the owner is in the car.

If a new license holder or under 25 then insurance may be reduced with a higher excess or to third party cover (which is all I ever had in CH) unless they are declared to the insurers first. Your Policy will have the details

The system you seem to be thinking of (two cars/ one set of license plates) is intended for the owner to decide which car he wants to drive at any one time..... andthey must physically move the number plates from one car to the other.
So; one car is in use, the other is parked somewhere private..... not on the public road, nor on a public parking space.

If you want to lend your second car to visitors and continue to use the other car yourself you'll need to pay for a different set of plates and speak to the insurance company about the insurance policy.

Probably cheaper all-round for your visitors to hire a car!

…don’t forget the fees for a new Fahrzeugausweis, new plates and the already paid fee for interchangeable license plates is hardly going to be refunded either. Should you want to return to the original arrangement after your guests have left, another new grey card and no refund on the new plates you turn in. If within the same calendar year, the previous interchangeable fee might be reinstated, or depending upon canton, you might have to pay again.
Add hassles of new insurance policy and reclaiming any credit left if paid until the end of the year...

my insurance and motor vehicle registration office always pro rate and automatically refund unused insurance and registration. its no hassle, just mail them the grey card and tell them you want new plates.

Depending upon how long they are staying you can get day plates for up to 72 hours. Costs 45-85 a day in Zurich

Does p.r.t. cover the interchangeable license plate fee in Ticino?
Do they refund anything for nearly new plates you hand back in?

If you have the plate for one month & cancel you will pay roughly 1/12 plus about 50 chf handling fee

This might be a valid short term solution. However, don’t understand how you read the fees. As per your link these “ferry” plates are available for up to 96 hours. Seems you neglect to mention the temporary grey card - max. CHF 100.00 (insurance 51.50). Additionally, I would expect that the existing grey card has to be annulled at the initial changeover to temporary and later back again.

Perhaps we need a cantonal breakdown
I take it, you are refering to VS?
In BL the interchange fee is just that - no refund and it is charged per calendar year. Returned plates are held in reserve for a while but no refund on initial cost either..

Of course the road taxes and insurance are prorated and refunded!

Never said they weren't re insurance and road tax. Question: initial fee for new plates, interchange fee, grey cards...
It all adds up and IMHO makes a short term change and then back again a lot more than just a useless idea

Re 96 hours, I didn’t see the table scrolled on my phone.

I added the cost of the insurance to the Tagesausweis to get the price range. So for 72 hours insurance is 44.60, Tagesausweis 87.50. Works out at roughly 45 per day. Would be a bit lower cost per day for 96 hours and is more per day for fewer days.

I don’t see any cancellation charges for grey cards.

No cancellation charges - but the new grey card returning to previous setup. Pointless "paperwork" with insurance/SVA. Hope your visitors don't get into trouble and return everything within the agreed timeframe...
Anyway, would you go through this rigmarole for visitors? Rent a car or walk
