In most cases it would be illegal to access their bank accounts, let alone make transactions for them after they had died.

It’s not just banks that have dual validation

Yes I believe your family is exceptional.
Many elderly cannot manage the technology and they feel genuinely lost.
My mum is 70 and generally shit with technology, but even she has learnt eBanking and how to book a flight online

Re: Will you still love me when I am old? — Today everywhere, is so unfair to the eld

I can tell I'm getting older because technology appears to be evolving faster than my brain. I suppose I've made the mistake of relying on my tech-savvy husband too much too, though. If something goes wrong with the TV or my computer, he's the one who usually ends up fixing it.

It took forever for my father (now in his 70s) to learn how to use email, in part because he does not type well at all and would easily become frustrated. I have a feeling there are a lot of elderly people out there who don't know how to type (especially men, as they probably weren't taught that in school).

Maybe there is some truth to that saying: "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." But I suppose a bit part of it involves the desire to learn something new in the first place.

Re: Will you still love me when I am old? — Today everywhere, is so unfair to the eld

I am 61 and rely fairly heavily on my sons (24 and 22) for technical support. It started as something of a joke, but has become a reality. My 89 year old mother, on the other hand, is as capable as me given that she has no concept/ understanding of the basics. I bought her an ipad in her early eighties and latterly an iPhone. She deals with both without problems and enjoys the connectivity it gives her.

For me, the issue with elderly people is more that they no longer count and aren't valued rather than that technology is taking over. I can't help but wonder whether an absence of compassion has led to an absence of respect. To counteract that view though, I would say that many young people show real compassion to the elderly or older members of society. I know one shouldn't brag about one's own children, but my youngest son has had to provide care to elderly/surgically incapacitated people during his Army service. I asked him how he felt about it recently (thinking particularly of personal care he provided to an elderly woman) and he commented that she needed the care and it was his privilege to give it.

I don‘t think it‘s too much to do with age as flexibility and open-mindedness.

I am 72 and can spot a troll on EF immediately.

Being more practical, I have been e-banking and buying and selling share online for the last 20 years. Of course all holidays and flights I book online. Bought my car on my phone etc etc…

Me too, but I'll be dammed if I can get my UBS app to scan a QR code on my ipad!

My mom was 60 when I started to teach her Internet. Without me (read: help) she wouldn't know anything. So slow down with your far reaching statements.

You taught her the internet? That‘s a lifetime‘s work surely? (Another far-reaching statement for you.)

Dad died in 2013. He had refused to learn/use any new technologies after the video recorder - big mistake.
Most people are able to find someone to help them in times of need. The issue is to be open to new ideas and have the self-confidence to think you can do it - when the faculties start failing that can be difficult.
I don't see an easy answer to this other than to trust the people one has around oneself, be they family or friends.
Me, I ain't gonna get old.

This is spot on
Absence of compassion through neglect
And yet, they have so much to say.. they would love to share and be part of society.
I remember my parents, both educated, being amazed about «sending an email», my Dad was expecting some kind of telex machine.

Then as said, put out a disclaimer that if it goes wrong when using an e-mail then whatever company it is isn't liable for any losses incurred.
To even suggest with any seriousness is beyond daft and is a great example of why vulnerable people need protecting from themselves with regards to online security. Needless to say, you just need to learn the basics of ebanking and mobile phones like everyone else. Even my 83 year old grandma learned email and ebanking and she never had tech in her life until a few years ago. She struggled but persisted and now she knows the basics.

Also please everyone (Sky, Klostrers, Medea etc) stop with the dramatics... being made to use Ebanking and other online services does not equal the abandonment of all old people in society. Yeesh.

Chuff, I can understand your young point of view and what you’re saying makes sense. But…… there really are many many old people who are getting left out because precisely society tends to have your point of view: figure it out and deal with it.
They won’t.
And from there comes transparency, feeling overwhelmed by technological novelty and not wanting to bother anybody.

Re: Will you still love me when I am old? — Today everywhere, is so unfair to the eld

I guess the question leads towards now, whilst having technology in some situations is exceptionally useful, at what point do we overuse it as a gap-filler.

I'm finding I'm asking myself, having watched some crap on FB, why am I watching this and starting to get frustrated that I've let myself be drawn in to the rubbish which is on there. same for YouTube of TicTok for that fact.

I think as a generation we're slowly but surely being sucked in by these things which are, by design, there to lure you in.

recently my teenage son's phone screen cracked and my god, you'd have thought his world had ended! it was actually quite scary how reacted. if you think about it though, for a lot of people, their phone is their life.

whilst I rely on my phone, and other tech, I'm starting to ask myself, what is necessary over what is a luxury and removing a lot of the apps which I used as a "gap-filler". FB is starting to fall into this category now as most of the time it's useless adverts of some video of strange goings on.

I think for the older generation, having a simple IPAD (I do think Samsung is quite complicated) is quite useful and we can see how they can take it or leave it also.
