Want an alternative to Google?

I would try "Duckduckgo" It will highlight articles which google will not show. Just a suggestion . This website appears to be less inclined to censorship...

Re: Want an alternative to Google?

Iíve been using DDG as my default search engine for a few years. Check out their !bangs as well, shortcuts to narrow your search.

The main reason I use DDG is because it returns what Iím looking for, not what they want me to see. ie, I search for a hotel I usually get the hotelís link, rather than paid links to sites that want to sell me something.

Also check out their !bangs which are shortcuts to help focus your search.

Re: Want an alternative to Google?

Over the past 6-7 years I used duckduck several times, didn't like it and left again. For about a year now I use it regularly, it improved over those years.

Still a good project. And it looks better than Bing.

Re: Want an alternative to Google?

When DuckDuckGo doesn't do it, you can try Startpage.com.
It uses Google but anonymously, so no, or less of a bubble.

Or you go back to Webcrawler or Lycos

With DDG use the !bang ď!gĒ to get google results without the tracking. You still get all the paid ads and not necessarily what you are looking for.

Re: Want an alternative to Google?

Google doesn't censor as such (except when applying right to be forgotten, or in totalitarian countries). But it does look at what you search for and build a profile of what you're likely to be looking for when you type in a search. They also present results according to how many links you've got and probably how many adverts you've bought from them.

This can be quite useful, as the idea is to present links that meet your request, rather than a whole load that don't.

To some extent you can control what you get back - insisting on certain words, or not others, or searching just a site.

If you want a less tailored experience, then use incognito mode before searching.

duckduckgo does not store IP addresses nor user information. So in essence the same as google in incognito mode.

Re: Want an alternative to Google?

I stopped using Google as a primary search engine when it was pointed out to me that when one searches for images of "black family" one is presented with rows upon rows of happy black families. Yet when searching for "white families" the first result returned is a black family and each row will have several black or interracial families.

This is an test you can do yourselves. It's the same with when one searches for "gay couple", rows upon rows of gay couples. Search for "straight couple" and the first returned result is a straight couple with a rainbow flag followed by several gay couples in every line of images.

Clearly Google is no longer a neutral space. This isn't just lighthearted trolling, this is seriously dangerous. It's the same with Covid reporting, which is why for anything where political bias maybe a factor I use Duckduckgo. Unfortunately, I still use Google for other searches such as ideas for days out etc. as the breadth of search is so much better than the competition.

Just praying for the day when Western government's grow a pair and take on the big tech giants. This sort of thing is not OK! With some robust legislation, they could take the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google down several pegs.

.
When I put those search terms in Duckduckgo, I got the same images as in Google. Same with the other searches.

May be someone's hijacked your computer and is trying mind control on you?

Likewise.

Now my wife is going to think I'm gay!

Tom

P.S. Also searched "white families", Google threw up more black families, but there were a lot with DDG as well, just fewer.

Re: Want an alternative to Google?

I got a mixed race couple second in the results in a search for "white family" as the image was from a Family Photographer and the family's name was "White" so the photos were titled, "The White family".

Rather than seeing anything sinister, I just saw this as excellent SEO skills on that site.

Furthermore I'd say the problem would be with your apparent lack of web-searching skills rather than anything else.

Try searching, in Google, for "caucasian family" rather than "white family" if you want to avoid seeing (for whatever reason you have) black-skinned families in your web search.

There are plenty of websites that should you how you can make better searches with a search engine -do you need links?

Make it easier, search for "black men" and "white men" on the two websites and compare and contrast. So weird. Or try searching for "european art" or "european inventors". It's sinister!
