Toilet freshener stuck in toilet pipe

It happened without noticing. Suddenly my toilet water filled the bowl instead of flushing. I noticed the toilet freshener had disappeared. Yikes.

I notified my landlord last night. He came at 9 this morning. He used one of those long steel snake things but couldn't push the obstruction through. He called a plumber who was here at 9.45. He couldn't fix it either.

So they're coming back at Monday morning to take apart the toilet (tiled into the wall) and hopepfully they can resolve the issue that way.

Moral of the story:

1) Don't use plastic holders for your fresheners
2) Don't tile your toilet into the wall
3) My landlord and plumber were extremely helpful, prompt and did their best on a Saturday morning.

I'm wondering who'll end up paying for everything....

I suggest you call your liability insurance pro-actively, just to find out if that is something that they would cover...

Re: Toilet freshener stuck in toilet pipe

If it's stuck in the U-bend, can you not put some rubber gloves on and get hold of it and pull it out? Probably not I'm guessing or plumber would have done that.

Major question - where are you going to the toilet until Monday?

Well, the good news is that:

- the water has been clear as I haven't been home much
- the plumber says I can use it as long as I don't use much toilet paper

Thank goodness I won't be home much this weekend so any major business can be taken care of elsewhere.

Re: Toilet freshener stuck in toilet pipe

Ah, the toilet U-bend problem... So far we have had only the large 'chocolate surprises' from an occasional guest. Yes, that happens... luckily I have tolerance dealing with the poo problem, long gloves and nimble wrists.

If water doesn't drain quickly in your case, that may mean that the freshener is still 'in the vicinity'. Hope it won't get to the point of pulling the entire tiled wall and the toilet off. You'd think that the plumber would already have a hose with a camera and a hook. Worth asking them about it perhaps? Hope to hear positive news.

Re: Toilet freshener stuck in toilet pipe

That happened to us. The hauswart came and took the toilet off the wall, snaked it and reattached. It was a mess because there were other things in the toilet….like a giant turd. I now use the toilet freshener that’s a gel you stick on the inside of the toilet…I think it’s a duck product. Anyway, we paid chf 100 for the hauswart’s labor.

Good luck.

That’s just plain and simply silly. You would need to replace at least 99% of all Swiss toilets if they are not „tiled to the wall“. I always use a loo freshener in both of my toilets, and it has never happened. Would you like to disclose the make of the offending apparatus, so that we can all be aware of impending danger and liability?

Re: Toilet freshener stuck in toilet pipe

After reading this thread I am really glad I don't use any products that you stick in the bowl.

While we are on the subject of blocked pipes, the drain specialist told us never to put wet wipes in the toilet.

Not sure if a camera to look in the drains is a standard item most plumbers have on hand. Sounds like it could be useful in the OPs situation.

We have one, it's actually a very useful tool, but I don't think ours can go in water.

Actually, my hauswart told me it happens all the time. Whatever brand you use, if there’s a plastic holder, it could fall into toilet.. I suppose myself and my neighbors are clumsy beings.

Obviously, shit happens.

Hmmm, toilets are made from porcelain. When it's clean, it doesn't smell.
Not even nice. It just doesn't.

Just be glad it wasn't a sex toy that became stuck in the toilet. That actually happened to a friend of mine once. It slipped out of her robe pocket and fell into the toilet and became stuck. She had to call a plumber and he had to dismantle the entire toilet, and when he removed it, my friend acted like she had no idea how it got there and pretended it wasn't hers.

Final outcome:

Well, there really wasn't: They weren't able to retrieve the object but the toilet works again flawlessly.

By the way, my landlord is covering the cost on the condition that I never use one of those toilet fresheners again.

It will be implemented in the rental contract for future tenants: "no washing after 22.00h, no dogs, no toilet-fresheners".

If there are no gentlemen in the household, the chances of keeping the toilet, and surrounding area, in clean state, are somewhat improved.

The gentlemen I know clean up if they mess up. That's partly why they're called gentleman?

Re: Toilet freshener stuck in toilet pipe

Had exactly the same experience a few weeks ago - the freshener block just disappeared without warning and the bowl filled up with water. I tried using a good plunger but it wouldn’t budge the freshener block. But my wife has very small hands and she was able to reach under the water into the U section and pull the block out, fortunately.

Just sticking to the usual bottle toilet cleaner from now on.

Another case of positive discrimination ladies avoid talking about? A sex toy fell out of the robe pocket (really?) and after “I have no idea what that thing is doing there…” no further questions
Men will have a slightly harder time explaining how the inflatable sex doll fell out of their robe pocket, blocked the overflowing toilet completely before exploding with a satisfying bang. The plumber might well just nod knowingly but you still have to put it all in writing towards your third-party insurance company after the bathroom has been fully refurbished

Re: Toilet freshener stuck in toilet pipe

I had this exact issue but it was a stupid friend who saw it in the toilet and decided to try and flush it through instead of take it out by hand.

Anyway, I found a great solution if anyone encounters this in future.

1. Try to remove most of the water from the toilet.
2. Boil as many pots and pans of water as you can.
3. Tip all the hot water into the toilet.
4. Wait a few minutes
5. Flush

Worked after a few attempts for me. A huge relief after spending after spending hours and hours sticking different objects down there in an attempt to clear the blockage. These plastic things are very flimsy and cheap. A bit of hot water will soften them up enough to get things going again.

Which just shifts the problem further down the pipes. Then Mökah (or their competition) has to come along and the whole procedure gets even more expensive.

That's when the landlord starts writing emails about "do not flush tampax, sanitary pads (and now plastic) down the toilet". Happened here this year, couldn't believe people still need to be told that in 2021.

In your case, the friend could have reported it to his liability insurance, that would have been fair.
