This is again UK - would be great if we could stick to Switzerland - which is as bad / far worse, believe me.
Please don't take this the wrong way; I feel like the thread split was unnecessary and the fact that people are switching back and forth is not to upset your need for order but an inevitable consequences of the topics overlapping too.

It is also important to remember that interacting about these topics is not to be taken lightly if you have unresolved trauma. You may think you are fine and then some dumb*ss says something that pushes past what you can tolerate. It is pointless to appeal to someone's better nature when they don't even want to consider a need for change. Look after yourself.

i think switzerland is relatively safe, but everything is situational.

i once couldn't sleep and went for a walk at 4am. on a saturday morning when those that prey on drunk revellers were active. i put on headphones so i couldn't hear and a hoodie so that i couldn't see properly. then i took a shortcut down an little used alleyway off the main bars.

not surprisingly, someone tried to mug me and i only heard the footsteps running towards me at the very last second so that i just had time to jump forwards so that the punch glanced off my back and not my head.

looking back, i have to ask myself wtf i was thinking.

as safe as any place can be. nowhere is perfectly safe. and when there are few people around. when it is late/dark. when it is a friday/saturday with drunk people around, it gets more dangerous.

sensible precautions would include not walking around alone late at night.

I have this image of Charles Bronson as Paul Kersey in front of me, when I visualize that scene.

Should have take a gun with you ;-)

This is a bit disturbing…. but something important to know given my previous comments about my teenage daughter. Thanks for making me aware and that, as parents, we should not lull ourselves into a false sense of security here.

I have zero proof, but I suspect it's similar to all the train suicides. If we don't report it, no one knows it happens. It's all good here. Or something like that.

This is mind boggling. And sad.

There is at least 1 suicide per week using the services of CFF

Or if we don't report it, then fewer people will view it as a viable option. Except everyone knows why the train is delayed.

Re: How is it for women here when out especially at night alone? (Sarah Everard)

There's an interesting trend on Tiktok where women are giving two looks to the camera and saying that most men can't tell the difference (here's a more obvious one if you want to try again). If you are a woman, you instantly know and may even have a rather strong reaction, for me it's pretty much "HELP IS ON THE WAY, DEAR!". So far, the men in the comments are proving us right. Some are also mad about it. There's always some dude mad about the protective measures that women have developed over time. 🤦🏼♀️

"Just say when you're not interested!", you say? Well, an obvious I'm not interested vibe is too subtle for some, but when you speak up, there's deflection, playing the victim, it's just a mess. And before you say "that's in America though" - it's here too. Not as much, but I've had this same sort of interaction in Zurich. And in Kuala Lumpur. And in Newcastle. And in Montreal.

I read the first as "this person's a real waste of my time" and the second as "get me out of this conversation now!"

AFAIK asking at a bar for an Angel Shot, or indeed, just asking for Angela is code for I feel unsafe. Help. Certainly in the UK and US.

The first one is a positive "GIRL! CHECK HIM OUT!", the second is "help, get me out of here".

Do you remember the time we hugged at the main station Zurich, under the Blue Angel, after having met quite a few years ago once, and this guy walked past us and made very lewd comments (although it was only a pre-Corona, girlfriend, goodbye and thanks for the evening hug)?

888 (like 999 but for women who need assistance) seems to be a good solution I think…

Worrying "trend" in UK nightclubs at the moment of young (mostly) women , some young men, being injected on nights out with the same stuff used to spike drinks. Backs of hands, legs, backs. Friend of mine says her daughter and friends now go out in denim jackets as the material offers more protection against needles. Awful.

Can't get the link to work for some reason. Is on BBC news site today - Nottinghamshire.

I'm sorry to hear this.

Under-reporting is a massive issue.
I've always said this ...

A friend moved to the countryside outside Zurich recently because she was able to rent a lovely big house perfect for her daughters and active dog.

Two of her daughters are in their early teens ... within the same area, there are some high rises where poorer incomed / refugees live. Her daughters came home from school in tears after their first day (apparently they are quite tough and never cry) and refused to go back. The boys from a certain part of the world were incredibly offensive to her daughters and even threw stones at all the girls on the playground and pinched them in the hall ways. The school had to separate the classes by sex. When my friend went to the school, they admitted they were completely overwhelmed with the situation and that they had to focus full time on discipline rather than education. At a great financial expense, she immediately moved back to Zurich Stadt and her children are in their old school.

To me, this is a rather shocking story, a big deal and yet you never hear anything about this in the news. I do worry that if these young boys weren't properly disciplined & taught, things will be more unsafe for women in this country in the future.

Without trying to sound anti-UK, I cannot imagine that behaviour happening here. I think awareness (such as this thread) of what happens (or has happened) in UK as a precursor to what could happen here is useful to know. To be honest even a case of spiking drinks would be alarming… it is not a safe world we live in anymore, except Switzerland of course.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-...shire-58990136
From the linked BBC article:

"I don't remember actually getting spiked, I just remember going dizzy and collapsing in the smoking area," she said.
The student said a doctor later confirmed that she had been injected, and she went to hospital for monitoring after experiencing heart palpitations.
However, she added she did not report the incident to police as she was not confident it would be properly looked into.

Isn't that a telling statement...?
