How/where to get a Rolex watch authenticity check with a quick turnaround?

Hi guys. I have a situation where I have seen a used watch, sold by a private seller, that I am interested in buying. This watch cannot currently be bought from an AD.

What I would please like to know is if there is anywhere in Zürich, or the wider CH, where a Rolex authenticity check can be done in relatively quick time, preferably on the same day or with only a couple of days turnaround.

I asked at Bucherer Rolex store if they had this kind of service and they said that they cannot check it on-site and can only send it to Rolex where there is a 4-6 week turnaround. This is too long.

I did a search for Rolex service centers on the Rolex website and all of them that were listed were actually outside of CH.

So, any suggestions please?

It's very difficult to tell a good fake from a real one.....

Maybe an independant like Beyler would give an opinion.

You will need to get the back off whcih will mean getting a new seal to make it 100% sure it is waterproof again.

Flip the bracelet off, at the 12 0'clock position their will be a model number, 4 figures at 6 o'clockl position their will be the serial number which if you look up, it will tell yhich year it was manufactured.

Ask the guy how old it is, flip the bracelet to see if he is being truthfull.

Saying all this, even GOOD fakes have these numbers, you can only be 100% via Rolex

All stainless steel sport watchs are currently high in price, usually more than retail price

Re: How/where to get a Rolex watch authenticity check with a quick turnaround?

Do you mean it can‘t be bought from an AD because it‘s out of production or because of a long waiting list? Spill the beans, what is it?

3 options that you could try, but I can‘t vouch for any of them.

There is a jeweller on the corner of Stockerstrasse and Bleicherweg that has used Rolexes. I think it‘s called von Däniken.

There is a second hand watch dealer off one of the side streets between PaP and Bürkliplatz (I think it‘s Kappelergasse, but not 100% sure)

When I asked at Bucherer about getting a real valuation of my watch for insurance purposes, they would only value it at retail, but suggested that there was an auction house that might give a proper valuation. It‘s somewhere near the alte Börse. I assume they would also be able to an authenticity check.

Thanks for the posts Biro, very useful info.

It's an SS model of a popular watch that is above MSRP but quite significantly less than on Chrono24, which is why I want to get this checked.

So basically I need to know if there is anywhere I can take it for a quick turnaround authenticity check other than sending it to Rolex for 4-6 weeks. If not, then I will likely pass.

If it‘s a SS (sports model or not) and anywhere near retail price, I‘d be smelling a rat.

Smells fishy, but not everyone knows the value of what they are selling. Does it have box and papers? First test is whether the seller agrees to get it checked out by a professional.

I can't really help with issue of the verification. I did, however, once find a watch which had Rolex markings on it. The metal strap was broken so it probably fell from somebody's wrist.
I wound it up and it appeared to work but the two buttons either side of the winder did not do anything. Other than that, it looked convincing enough to me although I am certainly no expert. I removed the back of the watch and discovered that it contained a Japanese automatic watch movement.

Oh...............is that shit i smell ?

Be very careful, it makes no sense to the seller to sell significantly under the approximate value that Chrono 24 put on it.

Re: How/where to get a Rolex watch authenticity check with a quick turnaround?

Take it to a used watch dealer pretending you want to sell it - they will know for sure.

Otherwise give these guys a call, they have Rolex trained staff on site, they fixed a problem with my Rolex on the same day.

A good friend of mine is a retired watch designer in ZH, he's worked with many of the top companies (but not Rolex, but he does know then well). He said take it to Herr Tinh at Beyer and mention my friends name, he should be able to help - you can also call my friend for help if you want, I'll PM you his details.

Thanks eyebeebee for the suggestions. I just called Nico Danken AG and sadly he doesn't deal with Rolexes.

I then followed up on your auction house suggestion and accidentally called an art auction house (lol), who then referred me to the watch auction house. The guy at the auction house said he can do a visual inspection of the watch within a couple of minutes to check that the serials match the warranty card, but of course he can't open the watch as that invalidates the warranty. He said if I have sharp eyes I can do the visual checks myself, but if I need assurance I will take it to them anyway.

Thanks, I really appreciate those leads, and it looks like I can get an external check easily now, but if I need a full internal check my only option is to send to Rolex via Bucherer.

I guess the issue is, if you need to pop the back off to confirm for sure, then the seller is legitimately going to be against that idea if the watch is less than 5 years old.

Yes, that certainly is not an option and I would not allow it either, which is why I was hoping that there was some kind of authorized service centers that I could visit. However, I guess that isn't possible.

To be 100% sure, you need to pop the back and in an authorised service center, think Chf 200.--

The price of the check is not such a concern, only the availability and convenience of the check. If I have to send to Rolex then it's a big pain.

Anyway, I have some time to explore options, and I am a persistent and determined sod, so lets see what I can come up with (and any further replies welcome of course).

Re: How/where to get a Rolex watch authenticity check with a quick turnaround?

What everyone said is completely correct and if you don't get a proper check then you are taking a chance:

- A watch that is cheaper than all other of the same watch is a huge red flag. The chance that you are encountering someone that hasn't heard of the Rolex bubble is so small

- Some visual checks you can make (but unless you have experience you may not be able to tell:

-The inscriptions around the dial should be crisp and the letters should should be uniform and aligned
-the crown logo on the crown should be centered and clear
-If you have a blacklight shine it on the top left of the card and a Rolex hologram will appear

If it's a ceramic Submariner I'm happy to look at some pictures and compare it to mine. (FYI, I have no interest in buying any more Rolexes!)

Nico Damken is pissed off with Rolex.

Also, Chrono24 has lots of shady sellers (same goes for Catawiki) so I wouldn't use it for price comparison.

Before you meet the person, have a look on Youtube. There are many videos that explain how to recognise a real from a fake. Obvious things to watch out for is the dial / numbers, Rolex crown, bracelet, etc.
