Random question, on the off chance someone has a 236cm Ikea PAX wardrobe with sliding doors.

Are they 236cm at the back? The website says you need 240cm ceiling height for assembly with sliding doors. I'm thinking that is to attach the rail at the front - but I don't want to make an expensive mistake, the back of the wardrobe needs to fit under a small ledge 239cm high (5cm deep). I have way more than 240cm where the front will be.

normally you need a higher ceiling for assembly room e.g. if you assemble flat, when you rotate it upright, the diagonal length is more than the height. otherwise you have to assemble upright which is more of a pain.

don't forget that the sliding doors add a cm or more above the wardrobe.

From what I see in Phil_MCR's link, it looks like it's 236.4 cm tall in the back, so as long as you can stand it upright where you have 240 cm+ space and then push / slide the entire, upright wardrobe into place, I think it should be okay.

I have 240cm ceilings and this size wardrobe and it works. Just be careful when you tip it up but it works just fine.

But it’s not right up against your ceiling? Because I need to push it under a 139cm high ledge at the back!

By your description, I suppose you live in a roof top place? Just because the back wall might be a bit tight, I would think having the wardrobe 1cm forward from the back wall, for example to gain a bit more height at the back would not be a big problem

In the worst case you could put a chamfer of the back of the wardrobe. It wouldnt be crazy or too difficult. But have a feeling it wont be necessary.

Plus you could always visit the store and look at the wardrobe, measure it and ask the attendants.

Nearest store is about 2.5 hours away.
Wall just has small overhang. Annoying at 239cm.
I think 240cm is just needed for assembley for attaching the doors, but want to be 100%.

It took a bit of effort but I measured ours and it is 236.5 cm at the back. At the very most I would say 237cm.
The extra height at the front is required to be able to slot the sliding doors onto the rails.

The reason they want a 240 ceiling is that they make you assemble them on the floor on the side and then tilt them upright and hence you need that extra space for the tilt.

However, if you are 2 people can probably also assemble upright directly.

It is not up against my ceiling. There is a small space (for dust to collect I am sure). As another said, you can put it together upright. I think you will be fine.

It's pretty straightforward to assembly them upright. The cams that need tightening are accessed from the inside and the top section slides sideways onto an upright.

At one point, with one side-wall up and the top section connected to that side, you'll end up with a fragile upside down 'L' so having a second person to hold the top while you fit the second side is pretty essential.
