Is it? I can't say I have noticed that (at least not for the underlined category) but I bow to EF's superior knowledge...
When I was living in Asia have I not met a real estate guy not wearing a sport model Rolex. (In Zurich might it be an IWC as well.)

You can add cement salesmen or any other type of people who want to make absolutely sure you understand that their watch was expensive. They are the "LV monogram bag" of watches... iconic and recognizable. And there is nothing wrong with that. Its just a specific client base and they seem to buy watches for other reasons than other watch enthusiasts...

Just my opinion: the worldwide popularity of Rolex must have some inexplicable connection to tourists buying Toblerone in Duty-Free shops. The watches are overpriced and ugly, the chocolate is best used as an ingredient for making mousse au chocolat in three versions: dark, regular, white

In Zh, I guess it's probably those who cater for a certain category of clients. The ones who take care of..you know, just about everyone, are not that ostentatious.

Anyway, OP:

Don't listen to us naysayers here, buy whatever you like and of course you know your hubby would like too...Rolex is a great brand. (just keep in mind is not the only one! )
Good luck!

That's quite 'broad brush stroke' I am a watch enthusiast with a very small collection and my Rolex Submariner, a watch I admired since childhood, is one of my favourites (and first 'serious' watch and gifted by my wife, I might add!)

If you want to 'flex' then, I'm afraid Rolex will not do the job when you have the likes of Richard Mille, AP, VC, Patek etc

Oh, and I'm not a real estate agent nor used car salesman!

Re: Rolex - Birthday present for hubby - help

If you're set on a Rolex because you know the husband likes a Rolex, go for a Rolex. If you're unsure on the brand the watch world is... a world and there are so many options. Price is one consideration but also consider where/when your husband will wear it.

Is it formal wear? sports wear? daily wear?
you've set a budget but that is likely your max... you don't need to spend your max. there are certainly (better) alternatives at a lower price point. As an example I didn't see anyone mention Tudor here which is a Rolex brand

I am a complete amateur and my first "serious" watch was a chopard mille miglia. I bought it because I like racing and I think it looks good on my wrist. I did not buy it because real estate agents wear it or don't wear it Buy what your husband likes. If likes a rolex get him a rolex.

There are a ton of videos on YT but I would recommend investing 20 mins on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfpFpi9D2x0

good luck!

Thank you so much to everyone here for the advice and sharing all of your knowledge!

I have to admit I was way off! However, from the excellent advice here, I decided to include him in the process and took him into Bucherer and Omega in Zurich today.

It was actually I think more enjoyable for him to be a part of it even through his initial protests!
Rolex turned out to be not his style at all.
He ended up picking out a Jaeger-leCoultre Polaris with a leather strap and he loves it!

Thank you all again, without the advice, wisdom and experience from everyone here I don’t think he would have a watch he loves so much or memories of an amazing day!

Now to make sure he doesn’t get his hands on it for another 10 days or so

Re: Rolex - Birthday present for hubby - help

Great news- and a much better brand- true quality. Jaeger Lecoultre was a sister company of Favre Leuba, where my dad worked when Bovet closed (now re opened, with its ateliers in a beautiful Castle). Good choice and much better taste (not for second hand car salesmen and estate agents, lol).

You should take him on a trip to Vallée de Joux- and visit Breguet too. Another name close to my heart, for all sorts of reasons.

Congrats, sounds like a great result! Is it the regular plain dial or the Chronograph (with additional circular timers on the dial) version?

Great choice! Often overlooked when it comes to sports watches, but a great watch!

Well done, Jenn! I hope he'll enjoy wearing it and someday he will indeed pass it down to his son. What a nice idea..

Is there anywhere in CH like Hatton Garden in London or 47th street in New York where you can just walk in to a store and immediately buy any of the Rolex or other luxury brand watches on display?

I think the days of just walking into a shop and buying the watch you want are long gone. Unless you decide to go for a Swatch

First world problems...

I've never had a waiting time for a watch, but the only Swiss watch I own in a Tissot so I'm definitely not in that rarefied air of having to wait for things.

Bucherer was recently acquired by Rolex. They have a bunch of new ones on display and a huge amount of "pre-owned" ones. Several shops around CH, the tourist buses in Luzern park just in front of it. If I remember well, the shop has 2 stories of new watches and one corner in the top floor with the pre-owned ones https://www.bucherer.com/ch/en/rolex...fied-pre-owned

For a more adventurous experience, there's the shop were private sellers rent a box in a vitrine to offer their watches https://rent-a-box.ch

"pre-owned"
Surely if "second hand" is going to still be an acceptable term it should be for watches?
