Indeed. He was an important long standing asset of this forum and should never have been banned in the first place. The good thing is that the moderators responsible for that erroneous act have now been defrocked.
Thanks omtatsat. Just keep your head down and your nose clean and we'll all get on fine.

Have you ever been checked and/or maybe forgotten to scan something?

I got checked once. They simply checked 3 items. No more.
I have lived in Switzerland for almost 4 years. Countless times of self-checkout. Never been checked.

I have a friend in the past who forgot to pay for a couple of wine (not in Switzerland) and finally charged with shoplifting, went to the court and convicted. I truly believe he forgot to do so because the wine was not expensive. Anyhow, since then I have established a habit of being very mindful (I got distracted quite easily) when checking out in supermarket.

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

Itís mostly a random process. Iíve been checked in coop and Migros a few times. Itís not a moral failing to be selected and youíre not superior if youíve not been selected. Usually they check 3 to 5 items and if youíve not omitted any of them, you are good to go. Sometimes you might forget an item, and they do the whole basket. Ooops.

I've also had the experience that I had an item in my basket which had no bar code, something exotic like a mango or coconut. Having scanned a load of items, then discovering I could go no further [...]
In my experience you can manually add at the self-checkout post these kind of fruits/vegetables that need no weighing and sell by the unit.

I really hope there's no one thinking like this. Because if there is, s/he seriously needs some help.

I think there will always be a class of customer that would be unable to cope with the self service technology. Some customers still prefer the old style pre-supermarket street shopping market where you just say what you want at the stall, say green groceries, and all is handed to you together with a hand written price ticket.

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

I've been checked once in Migros.

BTW, my favorites:
1. Coop
2. Migros - somehow a bit more cumbersome than Coop, and always prints a receipt
3. Lidl - sucks. you can't delete an item or change the amount, and I don't like that you need to scan a barcode to exit

If less check out staff were needed then I expect that the goods would become cheaper.
Clearly this has not happened.
Anyway, I canīt stand the self checkout and avoid them whenever possible. I donīt know why, I mean it is a simple enough procedure, perhaps it is because the whole transaction is too robotic to be comfortable, but I know I will have to get used to robot cashiers everywhere in the coming years and it looks like the first "Lights out" automated fast food (I hate to call them restaurants) restaurants will be slopping over from the US to Europe soon.
This whole automation in shops and stores seem to be the result of workers wanting to be paid a living wage. Why pay somebody when machines do it cheaper?

what I *like* about Lidl self-checkout is one can very easily enter a multiple purchase ie 30 x particular item, scan one and the total for 30 appears. Migros allows you to tap the plus button until you reach the correct multiple.
Afaik Coop self-serve tills do not have this function

Thatís my take on it too. I hate that you have to scan the same item multiple times in coop and canít just add them like in Migros and Lidl

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

I use them all the time, to the extent of almost never using the normal checkouts. I dislike the way they start scanning your items before you have put everything on the belt and then it feels like a panic to get everything packed before the next customer comes through.

Anyway, Iíve never been checked in Migros. I went through a stage of being regularly checked in Coop, sometimes just 3 random items but also a full re-scan several times which is a pain. No discrepancies were ever found. I worked out it was when I was scanning things and then not immediately putting them in my bag, but rather to the side to pack at a later timepoint - I shop on foot with a rucksack, so I have to pack optimally. Someone was obviously watching and seeing at some point that I was apparently putting something in my bag without scanning it, not realising I had scanned it already. I switched to being careful to scan in the order I want to pack, and havenít been checked since (around 2 years now).

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

Lidl doesnt allow you to delete items, so if you make a mistake the whole terminal is rendered useless until the representative resets it, thats why you often see a few checkouts that cant be used because the customer left it in progress and used another.

Last week a lady before me in the small migros checkout didnt pay for her groceries, the credit card terminal was left with please enter pin, yet she left with the goods. No way she didnt realize, this as successful payments will beep and the checkout flashes green. It annoyed me I had to delete her crappy items one by one in order to use it again

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

I've been using self-checkout for some time and now use the system where I scan items with my phone, so I don't even have to use the checkout kiosks. I used to get checked occasionally but haven't had this for some time. Most of the staff at our Migros know me, and are very friendly about it, so it's really no big deal.

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

I went to IKEA Spreitenbach recently after a long break and I found out that they fully switched to self-checkout in the store and self-ordering in the restaurant and take away. Much more convenient. I wish they had scanners like in Migros.

Also there are self-checkouts in H&M and C&A now.

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

I suppose this also belongs in this topic because restaurants are also crossing the line into retail, that is the food and drinks retail with the associated information technology for ordering and paying.
I had my first experience of this, that is online "shopping" in a restaurant for drinks in ZŁrich main station on Monday. It was this sitting at a table, scanning the bar code on the table, selecting the food/drinks from the menu which appears, paying using Twint and, within a short few minutes, having the drinks served at the table. I was actually pleasantly surprised it all worked.

Re: Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)

I usually scan the items and immediately throw them in my bag with all the other goodies that I have bought elsewhere. Could be a big problem later in the check out process if they want to check my purchases.

Because if they want to check what's in the bag it will be mixed up with purchases from elswhere.

Do you mean that the Migros brands and article scan codes might get mixed up amongst the Coop etc. brand names, or what?
That won’t happen.
