They'd probably need quite a good reason to scrap a store's self-scanning-whilst-you-shop system. | | | | | I don't think so, SubitoGo is phone app option, all you have to do is to scan the QR code at the store entrance, the rest is like online shopping, just scan the products with the app and pay within the app.

I’ll keep an eye out for them now and make sure to not add anything to the bill.

Hi all
I use migros and coop self scan as you go all the time, thats on average 3 times a week since they were introduced several year ago.
I have been checked many times in migros - over 20 times, not once in coop.
Migros staff once explained that the number of items they need to check in migros is controlled by algorhythm that uses things such as value of your order, number of system uses you have made, number of shoppers in shop during time period etc etc.
about 2 years ago whilst using migros scanner i made a mistake and 2 items in my over 200CHF shop were not scanned - genuine mistake. i received an explanation of how to use machine and a polite reminder to be careful. on this occasion the staff member explained that because the value of the non scanned goods was less than 10% of my total shop there was no penalty.
interestingly, i once had the experience where i shopped, paid for my goods and went home. all seemingly good. Two weeks later the shop telephoned apologetically to ask me to go into store and repeat my payment. The system had failed to process the payment correctly so customer service had the job of phoning all customers that had used 3 checkouts and request they go in store to pay. Which I obligingly did. So that time saving scanner cost me a time zapping trip. Technology eh |

If you forget to scan an item and you are checked, what are the penalties? Are store staff legally allowed to detain you? Can you be checked inside a shop or is a check only allowed once you have left the store?

If you forget one item in a basketful of shopping the don’t usually do anything unless it’s a large ticket item.
If you forget to scan a high value item amongst just a few items they will probably take it further.
The random checks to see if you have scanned everything are usually done at the checkout before you pay but I have seen people pulled over for checks afterwards, notably a guy with a pack of beer who obviously hadn’t paid for them as there had been no age verification required.
They can pull you over at anytime if they believe that you may have stolen something.

And, there's a similar approach at coop. Started using the handheld scanner, got checked twice in the first 6 months. No more checks since 3 years.

So If I accidentally scan an item twice are they committing an offence? ie for not preventing me from doing so?

You might have two of the same item so they can’t really prevent you from scanning it twice. I suppose they could have a pop up asking you to confirm that you really want the same item more than once.

Self-scanning is for responsible adults and shouldn't be clogged as websites to buy airplane tickets |

Two beeps should give you a clue that you have scanned twice.

At least in Migros you can just increase the number on the scanner after scanning the code once.

Some systems prevent you from double scanning. Instead of a barcode for each type of item, there is a 2D code (like a QR code), that is for each single item.
In CH, FELFEL does this.

I cant recall if it was Migros or Coop but one them (at least) asked me to agree to random check before proceeding with the payment.
I use these machines only if I have 1-2 items where things are obvious because I had a bad experience with Migros some years ago. At the occasion there was no mistake or anything just too much time wasted that I really needed to not waste at that moment.

I've been using the self-scan on my phone for a good year now and since then, haven't had a single check. Very occasionally I will be asked to show the receipt, but they've never looked at the goods.
Prior to that I used the shop's own scanners. I was occasionally checked. I think once they found an item that hadn't been scanned. I suspect the employees can see your record on the screen and as long as you behave, and this happens very rarely, they'll not do anything. I had a suspicion that you would be more liable to checks if you scanned items in, then changed your mind and removed them.

Have never ever forgot to scan anything; where I could have made an honest mistake was maybe, 2-3 times tops, when introducing the price for some bakery product that doesn't have a price tag barcode label and the pictures of the products are so bad that I couldn't make the difference between a few similar ones.
I am careful to keep in mind the name and the price though, but it might have simply slipped my memory a couple of times so instead of introducing certain type of bread roll I might have mistaken it for another type of bread roll (for instance), but the prices are similar anyway.
Considering how many thousands, no, tens of thousands we've left into the Coop or Migros accounts this doesn't come anywhere near something I should lose my sleep over.. I have worked in the accounting field years ago and I am very accurate usually so nah, I don't really make mistakes. I've been checked one time as far as I remember, for some reason their alghoritm doesn't pick me.

On the subject of self checkout, I've just discovered a way to stop paper receipts being printed at the Migros self-checkout machines (assuming you first scan your Cumulus card). The feature is buried withing the Migros App i.e.
Profil -> Einstellungen -> Cumulus-Konto verwalten -> Einstellungen -> Kassenbons nur digital erhalten
Or much simpler, login onto your account on the internet and navigate to the tile that has a picture of the Cumulus card > "Only receive receipts digitally"

He thanks Castro, struggling to find this on the French language version I discovered that the big M app now has an English (beta) language choice. Doesn’t work on every page but many.
