| | Self checkout in the shops ( Migros,COOP etc)
Have you ever been checked and/or maybe forgotten to scan something?
I got checked once. They simply checked 3 items. No more.

My husband once forgot to scan something due to being careless, and because the price of the item was more than most of the other items he had (there weren't many in total), he received a hefty fine. He was also quite embarrassed because they took him to the back of the store, etc.
Needless to say, we are both now extra careful whenever we use self-checkouts.

Yes, once. At the coop of the train station. I had a few minutes left before the train departed. I ran to grab a few beers, then ran to the self checkout and paid as quick as possible. I was running to the exit when Mr. Police guy stopped me. Just showed the ticket and kept running
At coop supermarket the age alcohol check is sometimes triggered by a wine bottle or a couple beers. Other times I buy a couple 24 packs and no age check |

My wife accidently did this at the Coop near Lugano, where we regularly shop. She only noticed when she got home and double checked the receipt for a CHF 9 item among 30 or so items for a total shopping of about CHF 140..
She went back immediately and told the manager who thanked her for her honesty and very kindly let her keep the item without paying for it. She then asked if this happens often, and he said it does, but if they know the customer is a regular (as she is) they will politely point out the error and no further action is taken. If it seems like a deliberate action, for example multiple items, then they will involve the police.
Interestingly, he said the amount of theft once they installed the self serve machines was actually less than when they just had the manned tills.

Having completed a massive shop at Coop Hinwil (ZH) a few years ago when Passebene scanners were very new, we were stopped for a random check.
We put everything in a crate within the shopping trolley, which is lifted into the car boot and then into the kitchen at home.
The assistant was very apologetic and said every 100th shopper is checked. It took her 10 minutes to scan every item out of the crate into another trolly. About CHF180's worth and accurate to the rappen.
I then asked her to transfer our purchases back into the crate, which she did very carefully and apologetically...

I’ve been checked a few times. Once they discovered that I’d scanned one item twice by mistake. Haven’t been checked for some months.
For me the convenience is worth it.

No, never. Always check meticulously that i’ve scanned everything, and paid for all I’ve collected.
Anything else would be theft. Can understand how a slip could potentially happen though.
Why are you asking?

We use it all the time in both coop and Migros.
We get checked occasionally, sometimes they just have to randomly check a few items and sometimes the have to do everything depending on what their computer tells them to do.
Only once had we forgotten to scan something and it was the one and only time we used the passabene app on my phone and the guy just said it happens often with the phone, added the item to our bill and that was that. It was a large shop and a low cost item.
The checks really are sporadic, there can be months and months between checks and then there are two in a week.

Thee were a few times when an unscanned item was found during random check in the first years after the self-scanning system was installed in our Migros. But there was either a cheap item of CHF 2-3 in the bill of CHF 100+ or another item was scanned twice instead, so I never had any problems. In the last five years there were no mistakes revealed during random check. The only problem is that our Migros is understaffed and it's difficult to find a person who can perform a check. Sometimes I have to wait for 5 minutes until someone comes.

BTW, I had an interesting situation in Migros in Fribourg. They have a system where you must scan your receipt to leave the store (like in IKEA; never seen it in any other Migros before). But due to the settings of my Cumulus card I got no paper receipts and the electronic receipt usually arrives 5-10 min later. I had a proof of payment in Twint, but obviously I could not scan it, and there was no Migros employee nearby to whom I could show it. So I just followed other people to leave the shop, after the gate opened.
Also I find it strange than in Migros in ZH you can take a free pack of salad dressing with every Migros Daily salad, but in Fribourg you have to pay for the dressing.

I don't often use the self-scanning checkouts but once, I was in a real hurry at the Migros and there were long queues at the normal checkouts, so I decided to use one. Anyway, as I was attempting to scan a packet of currants, turning it over to try to find the bar code, the machine bleeped twice. So, the next identical pack of currants, I simply threw over, avoiding the scanner. This was obviously watched because, after I had paid, an employee suddenly emerged, showed his identity card and attempted to compare the quite large pile of items I had accumulated with the receipt he asked me to hand to him. It took an eternity before he gave up and said that everything was OK.
I've also had the experience that I had an item in my basket which had no bar code, something exotic like a mango or coconut. Having scanned a load of items, then discovering I could go no further, I simply packed all the stuff back in the basket and went to a normal check out. Interestingly, the system had somehow recognised that the goods which the cashier was now scanning belonged to an abandoned transaction at the self-checkout. She asked me explicitly if I had tried to use the self-checkout.

I use it regularly, have a system not to forget anything (works so far ); was stopped few times, but they were fast. I love the system.
I even use subito-go system.
