| | So you thought that SSD [is more reliable than] HDD :-/
I've just lost a lot of data because my few months old Samsung 980 Pro failed. It's supposed to withstand 1200TBW without any issue where it suddenly started degrading rapidly having only 35TBW.
It's shocking that the more you run self diagnostics the more corrupted it became.
My jaw dropped when I googled about this, it was a ticking bomb https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder...are_observing/
Funny, I've built such a confidence in SSDs over the years that I wasn't even remotely thinking of making a backup of an almost new drive from reputable (in the past) brand |

The only constant about disk drives is they will fail. It’s not if but when. Everything needs to be backed up six ways to Sunday, as the expression goes.

Apparently it's a firmware issue. Download Samsung Magician and update the disk firmware. I've just read about it, was skeptical, but it seems it works. I updated the firmware, and right after that the diagnostic scan sill yielded increased number of errors. So I was preparing the disk for RMA by completely cleaning my data (in Windows: diskpart, select disk X, clean all). After that I thought about grabbing a nice picture of the red blocks from Samsung magician but the scan shows none so far, it's already ~70% I'm curious if the SMART statistics have been updated as well ?!
Anyway, my data is lost and a lot of the day to do the maintenance
Well, so now the surface appears completely healthy, but in SMART it shows 98 (% I think) Available Spare, so obviously it was hit with some damage. I'm not sure if I can claim RMA on it now I'll put it on some workload to see how it goes. I've got it on warranty until 2027.

Why wouldn't you do a backup?
Even if the drive itself doesn't degrade it's not water, fire, theft, etc proof...

Obviously I do cloud backups of critical data, which is quite small in fact. Why not all? Because with the GBs it takes so long... so I apply some common sense risk taking

RAID 6 on a homeserver (all laptops and PCs at home have a scheduled task to scan for changes in critical folders and auto copy changes) and auto backup on onedrive of the same critical files form the homeserver.

with disk drives it is also a good idea to have RAID 1 so in cases of hardware failure like this, you can swap out the failed disk with minimum of interruption.

So what I did on my iPhone is already available on my iPad and MacBookPro already. I use nothing of the hard drive capacity of my Apple device. No need for backups.
Only my 4K GoPro videos take a bit longer (the long ones).

An external SDD drive is typically used to take accommodate extra storage capacity from for example 4K videos (needing massive storage), so that you can process its content directly from the SSD drive from your main device. For example - I want to be able to process 4K or higher GoPro videos directly from an external device.
They are very sensitive. I have learned from experience, that it is not a good idea to use it at a method of longer-term storage .
So, it needs to be processed / uploaded to the Cloud ASAP, if it’s data you value.
What kind of data volumes are you needing? Perhaps someone here can offer good advice. I will as well where I can, but am really only Apple and GoPro since recent years.

RAID1 is quite expensive (2x), RAID5 is probably a better option (typically +50% if you use three drives) and you can also extend a RAID5 set if you want more space without having to buy two whole new drives.

I assume you are on fiberNet?

An external SDD drive | | | | | He's referring to an internal SSD.

Apparently the OPs needs are just a basic iPad (perhaps with Magic Keyboard) with iCloud syncing if I’m not mistaken . Only needs to plug it in, answer the smiley face which language they prefer and whiiiiiish - happily ever after |

It’s just there, and done!
Or why do you see this differently? Your POV is highly unusual for an IT consultant (have just now taken that from your previous threads) in this day and age.
There are quite a few professional profis here (ETH, Caltec etc.), so “fake it until you make it” probably won’t work. https://www.englishforum.ch/employme...-side-gig.html |

I remember going through the trouble of upgrading my oem-version that not even samsung magician could detect.
Maybe an upgrade to a firecuda 4tb drive is coming rather sooner than later, I have zero confidence in this Samsung drive.
