Re: Are the rumours about swiss people true

The best quote I ever saw about the Swiss was "inside every Swiss person is a policeman/woman dying to get out". They take comfort in their rules, schedules and tradition. It is neither a good or bad thing, just the Swiss being Swiss. It can be a lonely, cold place.

I remember walking my dog, every day for years I passed the same woman with her dog and finally I greeted her with a friendly hello. She stopped dead and looked at me like I had insulted her. She asked, Do we know each other? And I replied, Well, not really but I see you every day and thought I should say hello. She walked away, kept looking back like I was crazy.

Not everyone is like that. I know some great people here and very friendly. I think the others are afraid to do the wrong thing so they distance themselves and don't get involved.

Re: Are the rumours about swiss people true

Wow, I just read all these posts.
Some stereotypes seem true enough, but a lot of what I read here does not ring true to me. As half Swiss German and half Italian, I found some of the rigidity a bit much.
On the other hand, the Swiss are hard to get to know unless you can not only speak swiss German, but their specific dialect. If even one person in the group speaks German, the whole dynamic changes and they revert to more formal interactions all together. Intimacy, as in relaxing, seems to mainly happen amongst like speaking people.
Staring? It can be annoying but I almost find it more honest than looking at someone and then averting as soon as one is caught. I have tried dealing with a starer by saying hallo and something generic, maybe about the weather. I let them know in a way that if they are so interested in me, then let's talk. Sometimes it worked. Other times it only caused them to avert their gaze, which I found rude; staring, in a way , is entering a person's space and if that person is then accepting this intrusion and offering a two way interaction, the right thing to do is actually engage them.

Although we love the Swiss in general dearly, and our long-term Swiss friends in particular, we do find the idea that everything is vastly superior as long as it is Swiss somewhat tiring.

'I beg to differ', anyone with humour bypass should probably look elsewhere than the "English" Forum. Why is everything you write so 'Earnest', there's nothing 'important' about your posts, it just sounds like it is? Why make such a "Big Issue"?

I don't know if it's just a feeling.. i live in israel, came to switzerland..... and i was horrified..... i was little dirty becoz of camping, i had feelings that they viewed me as a low level, like you're a piece of crap. i've seen people, everyone is rich, they look like dead in the inside, zombies, nobody laughs, everything looks completely dark and dead..... nobody would help you.... idk..... very weird sensation of doom.... and also all the place is all over grafitti, i had a feeling that there are too many gangs around there, and criminal activity.... and sick sad people... it's so different from israel.. when i went to south switzerland things started getting little different, more normal people, less zombie looking like people, i would consantly see in the north people walk with their rich shit stuff, like perfectionists but dead in the inside.... poor people... i would never in a million years would want to get stuck with them, sorry, this is a living hell to live in switzerland.. south was a bit different.. people would laugh, talk with a bit more joy, and someone would offer help.. bit more normal...... the north is horrifying. and the place is shit, i'm very sorry, so much graffitiy, and so many negative feelings when seeling all of that stuff, it gives u a feeling like watching a zombie movie, dead souls........ rich non living soul less robots...

also when i was in an atm, a car with 4 people stopped (some young), starred , when i looked at them, they immiedeatly drove away.. wtf? also constant feelings of weird hellish place and feelings that there are bad sick people all over the place....... between zurich and basel.......

Re: Are the rumours about swiss people true

I have lived here 26 years, always west of Bern, and maybe I am very thick skinned, or maybe I do not normally linger around strangers, but I only seldom catch people staring at me.

I live in a small town with 7'000 mixed German and French speakers and I think perhaps the mixing & bi-lingual culture helps to soften any extreme behaviour.

I have several Swiss friends, and several English friends that have lived here longer than me. I don't find the Swiss easy to understand at all, we have an English speaking club, and some newcomers look at us as though we are a museum exhibition, some never come back, but some do stay and enjoy our free for all conversation group.

Funny how you repeat things (zombie, graffiti, dead) several times. Is that normal in Israel or is it just you? The four times I was in Israel I never met someone who behaved like that.
And never go further north. A winter visit to a Norwegian fishing village could prove fatal

Apparently his whole trip to Switzerland was bad. Well, the northern part, especially, so luckily you're safe, miniMia. Not so many graffiti-covered zombies down in the impoverished south.

I stopped a Swiss German guy the other day and asked him to pick up his dog poo I had just seen his dog do it in the grass next to the park. He replied in English "F off back to your own country!"

That’s the first time ever I have faced such a direct racial slur and was totaly shocked.

Why's that a racial slur? Which language did you pose your fecal recovery question in?
