Are the rumours about swiss people true

Hello everyone
Im currently considering accepting a contract for spending a while longer working in Switzerland. So far Im really unsure.

Ive been here for 2 months now and am starting to get used to the looks when you are talking on the phone in english and how people seem to think they dont have to move or hold a door open for anyone but themselves.

My company has found a nice apartement for me to stay in in Staefa which is all good so far.

I'm just here to get some stories on what other english people think and cope with the swiss way of life. Permanent or contract workers.

I have also heard some shocking rumours about the depressing gloomy way swiss people live their lives. Some rumours ive heard are mostly about the Swiss being the world’s most miserable creatures. Baffled and affronted by anyone who tries to make a joke, they fanatically disapprove of any humour that rises above the level of a clown being hit with a stick, though if you spill soup down your shirt they will laugh. Incapable of joy, they devote their dismal lives to banking and endless nagging about irrevelant things such as how you tie your rubish bag, when shops should close and nailing their "gestattet" signs on every street corner and will of course stick their nose in and instruct you what you can and cant do everywhere and of course advise you on how to live your life. Not forgetting the bent police that would be able to find somthing wrong with a taxed, serviced and unmodified shopping trolley banning any modification to cars even fitting 21" alloys on a car that has 19" as standard is highly illegal.

From time to time you will get fined for speeding 2km/h over their limit: this provides the only sour amusement a Swiss ever experiences. Im hoping some of this isnt true as Swiss people seem quite positive at the moment.

Some can be rathr strange even arogant, no more than your average east Londoner lol (no offence 2 any arogant swiss people) Do other people think the swiss way of life can somtimes get you down.

I hope i havent offended anyone with my comments about the swiss sense of humour or anything else ive mentioned. Im not on here to complain and be miserable lol. Hoping some people could give us some tips for avoiding dirty looks when speaking english ect.

All I shall say is that I'm glad we don't further encourage the kind of idiot car that requires 21" tyres. And if that is a true problem, I'd really like your life.

It's mostly all true, especially in the Swiss German region.

But it does not make it bad. Otherwise who'd stay?

For what it's worth, the Brits are an insular race too. We just don't notice.... ;)

Kittster, you've focussed on the number rather than the true meaning of the comment. Mr Stäfa is not claiming to have been harrassed for having 21-zoll rims (;)). Even my car only has 18" (he says, looking round to see who has something B_I_G_G_E_R).

Think about the overall subtle message ;) :)

Thanx for that, was just thinking whether i should mention that or just leave it. As the original plan was only 2 months I brought my English car out (english plates). Mainly because i couldent get all my xbox, laptop, clothes, dvds ect as flight luggage and it pisses the police off when they have to trace my UK registered address to send me my speeding fine. and NO I DONT HAVE 21" alloys or any glued on fibreglass to make me look "cool". All standard stock parts. And i wasent complaining, to anyone who misunderstood me, i was asking whether anyone agreed with the rumours and what they think of swiss life... ecspecially contract workers.

Why do you even care about them being miserable...has the "being a miserable swiss moaning minnie virus" already jumped over to you? :D

Seriously...just let them be miserable, that leaves more fun for you. And don't worry, not all of them are that way, you are just watching too much "Arena" on SF1.

Some are cool, others are chumps.

A worldwide phenomenon.

Yeah sure some of those rumors are true, but for every swiss that you find to fit that description I could show you an exact opposite. Its like saying blonds are dumb, but then for each one you could find an intelligent one. :msnshock:

And who are these sour grapes contractors you have been talking too? They should just like Evolver said, ignore the miserable lot. Thats what I do, regardless of the country I am in. Surround yourself with only the cool and sexy pple LOL and then life here will be a blast.

a) don't speed - inappropriate speed is not good. Besides, there is no points system here, only bans for those who take the p.ss
b) you're becoming the Swiss you've been primed to hate

frankly, if you see complaints here.....consider that there are 20 good things to ONE complaint - that's the way of the world.

I find it is difficult to classify how the swiss behave. I know it is a cliche but to large extent it depends on where you live. In Basel the dialect is often to say one thing and mean another in a sarcastic and humouress way. Look at Basel Fasnacht and you will see a lot of humour in it. I have found that people do laugh here. Also in the French and Italian parts of Switzerland, with the potential exception of Geneva I find people are not so serious, once you get to know them.

However, I often work in Zurich and I find people there a lot more serious and obcessed with image in "downtown Swizerland".

Meister_staefa,

Some people are not suited to big changes in their lives, like moving to a new country and adapting to a different culture. It sounds like you may be one of these.

If you are unsure and find it all a bit overwhelming, I suggest you stick with what you are familiar with...

I don't really understand the stereotypes expressed here against the Swiss. They seem very receptive to humor, there are not too uptight (could this be because I am uptight as well?), most (not all) of their laws are there for a reason (when I can drive I'll hate not being able to pass on the right), the Swiss most certainly do not dedicate their lives to banking, "gestattet" signs exist in the US and I would venture in the UK (i.e. only deliveries allowed / no through traffic), and I have never received looks when speaking English. Actually, to be honest, I have started to give people looks when *they* speak English out of a longing to speak with them or to observe Swiss youths attempt it! ("I call you later" -- Swiss German mistake... as there is no future tense in Swiss German.)

Yes, I have complaints (why dress like American rapsters/gangsters? or why can't I buy decent Mac & Cheese here?), but I hope that they are not normal stereotypes.

p.s. Going with your description of the Swiss, they must love Monty Python! The best British humor has to offer (I love it, so this is not an insult)...

Re: Are the rumours about swiss people true

Although our time in Switzerland has been limited so far, (moving at the end of the month yay)! In our visits there I found the Swiss to be no different to the people found in any city in the UK. I think that people treat you as you treat them, there will always be people that will want to get on with their own lives in their own way - doesn't mean that they are rude or arrogant.

When we started reading some of the horror stories we started to wonder if we were doing the right thing in moving to Switzerland, but thanks to this forum we have received a balanced view of what to expect. Given the choice of the UK with it's high taxes and ASBO's or Switzerland with the way of life it can offer us I know which I choose.

We can't wait to move over and start our new life, roll on end of January!

And to be honest, I get a bit pissed at people who want the nice scenery and standard of living to then put down the residents of the country they are in. Don't like it? Go somewhere else!

We have been backwards and forwards to CH for 40 years now. If you all think it is difficult now, you ought to have known the situation between 1963-1969. The Swiss can and often are Smug and with a 'holider than thou' attitude, money counts for a great deal in the heirachy, but one simply has to accept them for what/who they are and not try and change them. If you are determined to try and adapt and integrate, then you will have Swiss friends (salt of the earth) for life. Having now lived all over the world in three continents, our Swiss friends are the most consistent and welcoming. But then we speak fluent Schwiizerduutsch which helps a great deal. Good luck

Im not quite sure who that quote was aimed at... But as i keep trying to say, These arent my views on Swiss way of life. Instead if you read through what i originally wrote again, you will understand I was asking what people thought of the swiss way of life and if they ever experience moments where some of those rumours are true... ;) :D
