lost luggage at Zurich airport?

Flew back from a fantastic ten days in gorgeous boiling hot Israel yesterday with Swiss, together with the national football team.

They seem to have got all their bags, on the other hand I have no suitcase.

There were quite a lot of people on the plane catching transfers, and the lady at the airport thinks my suitcase has gone that way too.

Has anyone else lost their luggage at Zurich? I thought the Swiss were so efficint

One of the most annoying aspects is that I checked in with my husband (although we have different surnames and were sat seperately), our suitcases went onto the belt together, yet his appeared and mine did not.

If anyone has lost their luggage, how long did it take to get it back? I'm a bit worried about that kilo filet of roast beef inside.

There is a good chance and it is likely that they will deliver the luggage to you.

You might not get this roast beef. Was it already roasted? Do you know about Swiss import laws?

moved to Daily Life - it can become a complaint when they cannot find your bag

Re: lost luggage at Zurich airport?

I have had this happen to me on a few occasions and the luggage normally arrives the next day.. This is coming from North America..
Unless your luggage has been sent to some far off destination they are quite efficient in tracking it down, on the other hand someone else could have walked off with your luggage.
Keep checking with the online tracking system and I hope it shows up soon.

With all the security x-rays the bags go through nowadays ... that beef may well be roasted by now.

Maybe the drug dogs are having a field day with Sarah's bag?

Maybe the beef is the reason for delay, if you're serious. I didn't think you were allowed to bring meat in from exotic locations, perhaps it was seized.

Re: lost luggage at Zurich airport?

We've been lucky with Zurich - although we usually fly American. When I lived in the US anytime I traveled through Philadelphia to Europe, no matter what the airline, 50% of the time, my luggage was delayed. But I always got it a day or so afterward. They should be able to trace your luggage, and I hope you'll get it soon. It might not be Zurich - it might have been the luggage handlers at one of your earlier destination - maybe they wanted a sandwich?

As for the beef....well, I'd say someone else is very, very happy now given the price of meat here.

Re: lost luggage at Zurich airport?

My bag was returned to me at home when some silly-billy went off with my suitcase instead of his own. The airport sent a taxi to his house (his home address was on his own suitcase which was still at the airport) but he had already set off by train back to the airport to get his own bag back.

The airport then gave him his own bag back then put mine into another taxi and delivered it to me later that evening.

Worked like clockwork.

Re: lost luggage at Zurich airport?

Thanks for all the help people. I really hope it turns up within 24 hours - currently 14 hours and no sign on the phone or on the online thingy.

Most annoying that my OH's suitcase went through with mine and his came through! Even more annoyingly mine weighed 50% more than his as I have all his laundry and have signed up to wash today.

Beef was already cooked, wrapped in silver foil and in a freezer bag. It's weekend leftovers - not very much - less than half a kilo. I know about the import laws, so I reported it at Customs. If they've got it, they are having a very nice sandwich indeed.

"BEEF WAS ALREADY COOKED, WRAPPED IN SILVER FOIL IN FREEZER BAG"
This is the catch.
I am going to share my opinion but forgive me for not goping into too much details.
Remember, you flew out from Israel....Remember, they are flighting terrorism...and remember, they have good security.
Without going into details, your meet, wrapped in the foil, will create a suspicious immage in the xray machine. I am confident that they have kept your bag behind for security reasons. After they check it out closely, they will forward it on the next days flight.

Re: lost luggage at Zurich airport?

I passed security at Ben Gurion as I always do - my passport is full of Israeli stamps and I usually make a trip or two to Israel a year for family reasons. I speak enough Hebrew to pass security too.

I agree that they really know what they are doing at Ben Gurion, and what they are looking for. My bag was checked onto the flight, we have the luggage check-in stickers.

A question for Sandgrounder - how long did it take for you to get your suitcase when someone else took it? I thought I saw it but then someone else took it so thought it wasn't mine.

Re: lost luggage at Zurich airport?

I love PAWOB's; especially at the end of a trip, home delivery!

The beef was not a good idea- there are restrictions for importing anything like that into Switzerland other than from the EU. But then again it could have been stopped leaving Isreal; even sniffer dogs love beef.

I came in on a flight around 6pm and the suitcase was delivered to me in a taxi at home by around 10.30pm (it was December 2006 so I can't remember the exact times).

I think the reason it was all so quick was because we knew exactly what had happened, we had the other guy's address because we had his suitcase and if he hadn't headed back to the airport on his own, I probably would have got it even quicker.

The other reason was that I had some medical items which I needed urgently but unfortunately they wouldn't let me take on the flight in hand luggage.

If someone has got your case by mistake I imagine they would know by now so may have notified the airport and they might be waiting until they have a stack of baggage to return. I heard this is the usual policy, i.e. they don't send luggage back piecemeal, they wait until they have a van-ful.
