Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss being able to just speak to people you meet (that's why this website is so good!), rather than thinking about which formal or informal approach to have.

Family, friends and everything else from Tesco's and 24 hour shopping.
... and TV I can understand - channel 26 SF zwei has saved me this week!

You miss 600 beers before you miss your Mom. I like your style.

I miss being able to drive from the ocean through the mountains to the high desert all in four hours.

I miss being able to go grocery shopping at 2 AM.

I miss The Bierstein (a wonderful place with over 600 types of beer from all over the world in their coolers and a constantly changing 10 on tap).

Honestly, I miss Taco Bell.

I miss being able to say "That's a bargain at twice the price" Never. Happens. Here.

I miss having a yard and a garden.

I miss my mom.

I miss good service.

I miss the ever changing grey skys of Oregon. (Never thought I'd say that)

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss looking from my window and seeing the sea...
And shopping centres always open
And nice medium range clothes at good prices (here there seem to be only the cheap casual stuff and the top brand very expensive things)
And restaurants at normal prices
And not having to check if the cinema is showing the english version or not (and going to the cinema at less than half price from here)

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Sunday lunch and a keg load of beer at the local with friends I've known since school. And the sleep afterwards...

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Well, I've got 2 homes to miss, so from Yorkshire...

1) Sunday morning football, then an afternoon on the lash with all the lads
2) Abdul's Indian Takeaway, Southgate, Pontefract

From Exeter...

1) Crazy people on the Cathedral Green (exhibit A - 3 French teenagers playing keep-the-football-off-the-tramp till he went for them with a broken bottle, then playing dodge-the-tramp-and-hit-him-with-the-football. The tramp lost both)
2) Upstairs in Bostons, sat in the comfy sofa under the giant saxophone picture. If you're ever in Devon, you need to go there.
3) Open Mic night, every Monday in the Jolly Porter, every Thursday in The Black Horse
4) Gentlemans Jack for £2.00 in Timepiece Bar
5) Being able to give directions to anywhere by starting with "well, you know where Debenhams is...?"
6) Fried breakfasts at Terry's Restaurant on Sidwell St

and last but by no means least

7) A season ticket in the Ivor Doble stand at St James' Park

Re: OK now tell me, what do you miss the most

I went to Carrefour and bought all of the fixin's for Margarita's on Cinco de Mayo. It was a great fiesta...Don Weber and Desperado's serves decent Classic Margarita's. A little pricey, though.

As for what I miss, someone mentioned the steak here being good...maybe I am shopping at the wrong places, but I have never seen anything like an inch-thick New York strip (or any Prime beef, for that matter). I miss cheap take-out....Chinese, Thai, Italian or anything ethnic. Any Mexican food...I import Tapatio hot sauce by the quart whenever I travel back to the US.

Sunday shopping would be welcome, but I am adjusting. I usually travel to Italy anyway for clothing. All in all, I am pretty happy with what I have here, but if I ever lost my job I think I could get rich with a good taco stand...

I miss catseyes. Driving here at night time just feels more unsafe without them. Also, who thinks it's a good idea to paint the lines on the motorway in red where there are roadworks?! My eyesight is pretty good but how hard are those lines to see in the dark?

The London Shop is in Zug close to the Metali Shopping Centre on Baarestrasse. But don't get your hopes up, the last time I was there the choice was fairly limited.
Went in today, the Walkers crisp selection was quite diverse by the look of things. They also had some items I couldn't leave without.

Yorkshire Tea, Like Tea Used To Be (TM)*
HP Sauce
Sarsons Malt Vinegar (in the purple plastic bottle!)

So yeah, I'm quite glad I popped in

* - "Like Tea Used To Be" must be added to all instances of mentioning Yorkshire Tea (Like Tea Used To Be). Also, little know fact that makes this the best tea in England, is they employ people to check the water types in different areas of the UK and produce a blend to suit that area - so the tea you get in London is different to Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow - it don't travel well! (but I still spent 12CHF on a box of 80 tea bags!)

Reminds me of another thing I miss from Yorkshire,

3) Betty's Tea Rooms in Harrogate

If your anything like me, you wouldn't give anything you've missed in exchange for all the things you have learnt.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Definitely mexican food is high on the list. A proper chip and salsa is hard to find. Maybe someone has mentioned this before, but there's a shop in Zurich that sells a decent corn torilla and assorted mexican stuff. Prices are pretty high, but you knew that was going to happen...
It's called El Maiz, on Josefstrasse just north of the HB. We buy our taco fixins there.

Cheers!

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Feeling nostalgic on my 5th month anniversary here so thought I'd revive this thread...

Laughing and talking with family and friends without having to get things explained all the time, and without having to float off to some other planet just to get a break from the 'overload'. Can be very embarrassing sometimes!

I miss people being generally so laid back and on the same wavelength.

Chips/crisps in more than 3 flavours and not made from reconstituted potato factory floor sweepings. Oh for some ETA sour cream and chives Oryans - Oh so chunky and potatoey!... Pams cheese and onion would be good too.

Hot chip butties in fresh white bread with loads of butter (which brings salted butter to mind...is it available here?), a sprinkle of vinegar and some whitlocks tomato sauce. I made some homebrew tom sauce the other day cos I was so desperate... now all we need is some chips!

The variety in supermarkets... even New Zealand makes a far better effort ... Admittedly they get our best lamb filets over here though so can't complain there... and you get to try freaky stuff like ostrich, rabbit and horse here...Anyhoo...

And I miss that my family couldn't be here for my wedding
