(which brings salted butter to mind...is it available here?)
It is in big shops. The Migros next to me sells it, it's called Salzbutter (duh).

Re: What do you really miss the most?

You know, there really isn't that much in Vancouver that I miss. However, there are a few:

1. Wendy's
2. Watching NFL football on Sunday's
3. Toothpaste selection

I can't even count the number of times in the last year, especially after a night out, that I would have killed someone for a Big Bacon Classic...

excellent, ta for that... hadn't actually looked for it yet, but hadn't ever seen it at my local. Serve me right for shopping at Denner, I guess .

Ta for the congrats on the wedding too... It was only the Standesbeamtliche (if that's the spelling) ceremony though, and people assure me that's that part is nowhere near as important as the Kirchliche ceremony which happens next year, when my folks can make it over.

Odd though because the civil part is the bit that pretty well commits you to eachother for life...

It's also available at coop, in a light blue-green cylinder. Just look for the words "Salz" and "Butter". It should be right next to the herbed butters.

Good luck with the wedding.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

In addition to family and friends...

Good Mexican restaurants

Chicago-style hot dogs (with a Vienna beef dog, of course)

Chicago-style, thin crust pizza (yes, I said thin crust)

Jays BBQ potato chips

Italian beef and/or sausage sandwiches

Unsweetened, fresh-brewed iced tea with endless refills (nothing refreshes better in the summer)

Fritos

(Hmm...seems I should go get some lunch...)

Super Bowl Sunday and watching the game at a normal hour

Concerts by my favorite bands that don't stop in CH (which is most of them, unfortunately)

Having more than 2 or 3 golf courses to choose from

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Actually, a lot of bands come to Switzerland but you have to check the actual venues for them. I've noticed a lot, for some bizarre reason, many bands don't put their Swiss shows on their websites. I've encountered this on at least 3-4 different occasions.

Good Mexican restaurants
In the absence of these, we've gone with the DIY approach for nachos. This seems to work ok:

1 large onion
loads of chopped garlic (I go with 4-5 cloves or more, but more conservative types may want to go with 2 or so)
Oil for frying.
Fry the oil, onions and garlic on med to high heat til clear and...

Add to that a teaspoon each or so of ground:
Cumin
Coriander
Chili (1/2 tsp might go better for a milder brew or more of course if desired)
Other tex-mex spices you might like/happen to have at hand

to that add 500g of beef mince and brown.

Add a can of red kidney (Coop or Migros) or refried beans (good luck), with
salt and pepper to taste, and simmer for 20mins or so or til mince is cooked through and the sauce is rich.

Sprinkle grated cheese (racquelette cheese seems to work well) over a plate of Nacho corn chips (from Denner, Migros, Coop - not the best ever corn chips, but they do the job well) and melt under a grill if desired.

Spoon on the chili con carne type mixture

Add a dollop of sour cream (or quark goes well too) and guacamole, if you have avocados at hand and can make some.

Serve with a fresh lettuce and tomato salad

Enjoy

Substitute nacho corn chips for baked potato for a more "English" flavour

Thanks for the recipe. I have no problem cooking my own Mexican dishes. In fact, I do this often and enjoy doing so (we love El Maiz). If you're looking for some good Mexican cookbooks, I would recommend you try something from Rick Bayless, including this one or this one.

Just the same, I miss being able to have someone else make a great Mexican meal for me at times.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss my family and friends more than I thought I would, but I haven't been here long enough to develop new friendships that are worth mentioning

Apart from that I miss food, savoury snacks in particular for when I'm on the road or get home late at night. I really believe they have to much sweet stuff on sale here - which I don't like. Even the bread seems sweetened...

Seems to come with the territory as I've observed it here... cook any "different" stuff yourself, or face cullinary monotony.

Thanks for the recipe book tip. Once I get a job I'll look at hunting them down. But isn't mexican just: take random ingredient of your choice, add garlic, chili, coriander and cumin and voilà?

- Decent shopping hours.
- Albertsons, Ralphs, Pavillions, Costco...a real grocery store with variety!
- Mexican Food and SUSHI SUSHI SUSHI.
- Nordstroms, Saks, and Barneys...well, shopping malls in general.
- In-N-Out and Del Taco
- My girlfriends. There is something not right with the women in this country...at least the women I've met so far. I think I missed one too many etiquette classes or something. We all fart, we all poop, we all pick our noses...there is no one above this!! It's okay to be human every now and then!
- Automatic Transmission.

Must be quite a strong power-shower boosting water pressure...that's the only way to get a decent shower in London. Maybe you should look into getting one installed in Bern. I'm sure it wouldn't set you back very much.

Add a can of red kidney (Coop or Migros) or refried beans (good luck)
Refried beans: bigger Coops stock it in the spice/ethnic food aisle, Old El Paso brand. See for yourself:
