Seafood: Having sushi everywhere. I am a bit suspicious of fish in land locked countries.
That's up there with 'don't eat yellow snow'.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss:

- the sea. Looking at it, walking by it, sailing on it. The lakes are all very pretty, but no substitute.

- rye bread which is _not_ pumpernickel.

- proper bacon

- choise of beer (but I can of course pop over to France)

- a slight breeze instead of thunderstorm or no wind.

/Martin

Ohhhhhhh yes. I'm back off to Blighty for two weeks and I shall be at the sea as much as I can. There's something fundamentally wrong about calling a lake a 'sea', especially when you can see the other side.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I really REALLY miss sugar free squash.
Marmite, mmm, Marmite.
Sunday newspapers with supplements in.
British Humour.
Going to watch my footy team with my family and mates.
Sunday shopping.
Being able to do my washing whenever the hell I want.
Decent fruit, veg, meat and fish.
Milk that isn't oddly sweet and too creamy.
But hey, looking forward to these things makes me excited about going home to England as if it's a great holiday!
Back home, I can't ski, visit lakes and mountains and rollerblade as easily as I can here - I'll miss that when I go back for good.

- And in the nearest French hypermarche (Geánt, St. Louis) it is on the row with exotic foods - I laughed, but even 5 years on the island was not enough to get used to that stuff.

I miss popping into a neighbor for a cup of tea and a chat. Well without the phoning for an appointment.

If you're in Zurich, I've seen them at the Rennweg Coop (St Annahof).

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Good, fresh seafood; especially fresh halibut.
Good fish 'n chips.
Bags of ice from the grocery store.
Mission burrito shops on just about every corner.
Hot spicy teriyaki chicken.
My garden.
Night skiing, especially being able to ski race at night after work.
Wilderness areas.
Insect screens on all of the windows.
Wandering through a bookstore full of english language books.
Keggers with 40 or so of your best friends and their friends.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss going out for a meal, and not being surprised with the bill . Eating out here is just so expensive!
When I was in the US, Saturday mornings would be for grocery shopping, meeting up friends over coffee/lazy brunch. and Sunday would include a bit of cleaning, which of course meant some vaccuming. Here I cant switch on the vaccum, cant go for a shower at midnight, cant do anything much on a Sunday if I am not going out to the mountains...oh it sounds more of a complaint, than something I miss!

Re: What do you really miss the most?

1) My family (but just for the first 3 days)
2) My friends, but this is obvious
3) Italian food
4) Meet and easily get to know people, have those smiling at you, talking to you even if they don't know who you are. Still, friendliness and openness to the foreigner. If you are a foreigner in Italy people will be curious at you and everybody will ask you things about your place of origin etc. Nothing of this seems to happen here.
5) Girls behaving less complexed in general, here it seems that they try not to give you the satisfaction of looking at you. Initially I thought it was just my impression, then I had confirm by several other people. Are they scared or what? A smile of a girl can make my day, I miss it so much! Ok, sounds like a complain.. sorry
6) Quantity of cultural events, parties, concerts, etc.. in Rome there are so many things to do that you really have to make a choice almost every day.
7) Price of amusements. In CH if you want to have fun, YOU REALLY HAVE TO PAY IT.
8) Go down the square and speak Italian and feel part of your country
9) Rome's beautiness
10) The monuments, the greatness of Rome
11) Bikers and the way italians are passionate about motorbikes, cars and sports

What I don't miss:

1) The typical italian work environment, plenty of manager d**kheads and competent people having to stand at their orders
2) Arguing about Italian politics
3) Rome's traffic, having to plan 3 hours ahead everything if you have to go from one side of the town to the other
4) Italian bureaucracy. Here manys complain about the Swiss, but they don't know how Italy is a nightmare on this. Yet, if you need some documents, they might be able to send you from one side of the town to the other. Another 3 hours..
5) Lack of civic sense in the traffic and about rules in general. Italian creativeness comes at a price..

Re: What do you really miss the most?

From Holland: I miss going to the beach and listening to the waves and feeling the autumn breeze on my face. I miss eating proper seafood at normal prices, there are more fish species other than tuna, salmon and pangasius. I miss spontaneously calling friends for a drink and meeting 2 hours later. I miss open air markets with more than 5 stands. I miss clubs that are not overcrowded where people actually dance on the dance-floor.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

From Tampa, Florida.
I miss:
Sailing
Salt Water
Beaches
Sunshine
Bagels bagels bagels - are there any here?
Real pizza
Steak
My yard (garden for most of you...)
Boats
Golf that one can afford
Free tennis
People who smile and say "hi"
Neighbors who give a sh*t
Really bad, watered down, boring Miller Lite
Food, of any type that costs less then 100chf for a family of four
Getting in my car and being at the office in 10 minutes
Riding my bike to the yacht club and chatting with people without feeling like and alien imposter
When the kids in the neighborhood act up, being able to speak to them in a language they understand so they can straighten up (our local kids are hood-rats)
and that is only the stuff off the top of my head in 3 minutes or less.
