barrys tea

It's not the tea, it's the water - I have kilos of Barrys tea bags and no matter what I do it just doesn't taste the same - I think I'm going to have to import some peat and make a sort of reverse brita filter

I miss many things but one in particular stands out.

I miss surfing the internet and finding a great deal on a product and having it shipped quickly to my door free of charge or at a minimal cost. Charges on shipping, customs etc are an absolute joke in Switzerland.
You can order from amazon.de - shipping is free. You need to pay customs above a certain amount, but then you don't pay the German VAT which is already included in the prices shown on the page.

There are also many Swiss online shops that do free delivery. I always use www.preissuchmaschine.ch to find the cheapest offer.

Amazon.de is Free over 20EUR. I often make several small orders, big enough for Free shipping but small enough to avoid tax on the way in to CH.

Also try www.toppreise.ch

[quote=spamchek;124]What I love about Zurich -

low taxes, high salaries :-) yeah, when you hide ur money in a swiss bank
that people don't really care what language you speak, right, they speak swiss german anyway
that people are bi/tri-lingual more often than not,but speak ch german only
the weather, although I'd prefer a little longer days in the summer
that we can be 20min outside the city, yet smack-bang in the middle of the country-side.
that public transport works, and stinks like sh...most of the time
that people don't throw their rubbish on the pavements (in the citiy).
that there are proper Italian restaurants at Swiss Prices for small portions
that people love children..ahhhmmm, yeah..just about in a sick way, just read the papers lately. Never had so many nasty comments when kids cry.
that people can generally be trusted, when someone is watching
that health-insurance is not automagically included in my tax-bill.
nature - the mountains are awesome
that foods in my supermarket are generally of good/superior quality, and triple as expensive as in german or france
low crime-rates, where in communities of 100 people?
that I can leave my door open and unlocked, occasionally even if I'm not in.
that my relationship with my neighbours is not just superficially "goodmorning/good evening" EXCEPT IF YOUR NAME ENDS IN 'IC'

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss the freedom of time. Free to go shopping when I forget something at 9pm or when surprise guests show up on Sunday afternoon to run down to the store quickly for something.

I miss the friendliness in the stores (even if most Swiss call is superficial). It makes me feel welcome for that short time I am shopping. Unlike here where they usually make you feel like an intruder.

I miss the shrimps and crab at normal prices in restaurants and large portions at small prices.

I miss the conversation that men strike up when you stand next to them in a pub or elevator or anywhere. So easy to meet new people, men and women. Never alone long if someone goes out on the town alone.

I miss the crowded busy buzzing streets even at 1 am in the morning.

I miss smiling faces instead of pouting ones...

Yes, I do miss these things and am refreshed at least 4 x per year to relive them when I return home.

I miss and not necessarily in this order:

1. toasted "everything" bagels and cream cheese
2. graham crackers
3. evening/sunday shopping hours
4. libraries full of books in English
5. listening to the radio in English in the car
6. real sandwiches
7. mexican food, green chile rellenos in particular
8. having the pharmacy -- and over-the-counter stuff like advil and aspirin -- in the supermarket
9. ok I'll admit it... krispy kreme doughnuts and jelly bellies (yes you can get tiny boxes at the coop for chf 3.95 ... let's get real...)
Oh yes dear writermom, I agree with all 10 of your misses. I really do and had to smile at them. Glad I am not the only one thinking 3.95 for that little box of jelly bellies is so damm stupid.

Why would they speak another language? People in Spain speak Spanish, people in France speak French, people in Italy speak Italian, people in Zurich speak Swiss German. Integration means you as a foreigner learn the local language, not the other way round.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

No prizes for guessing where I'm from, but -

(Apart from beach, warm weather blah blah)

Chilli Kettle Chips (i.e. more than 2 flavours)
Salt and Vinegar Chips
Being able to read the various labels and instructions on ANYTHING
Being able to deviate from the 'Ja, bitte, danke' shop jargon with EVERYTHING
Caramello Koalas
Seafood and meat, and I'm talking fresh, fresh fish markets!
Webber lamb roast -- pork crackling =)
Good sushi that's cheap and fresh
Late closing supermarkets

Could go on and now, now I'm depressed (haha)

Re: What do you really miss the most?

The Pacific Ocean and Palm trees! I still chuckle when I remember one of the locals here told me that Lac Leman was just like an ocean because it is so deep.

The feeling you get while surfing gives a different perspective on life. The power of the ocean makes you realize how insignificant the little problems in life are.

I think if the lakes here had 10 foot waves, the Swiss would smile more, have fewer rules, and would stop staring at everyone.

My wife is in the States on a business trip right now, and obviously she can't bring me back the Pacific. I did ask her to bring me back a Carne Asada burrito from Alberto's, or Albertaco's, or Albertito's, or any other Southern California Mexican food place that looks a little disreputable.

I am willing to risk any health repercussions of the burrito having travelled for 24+ hours in a suitcase. Although, it may not make it through customs as it may be classified as a weapon due to its ability to induce a heart attack.

When I think about it - this is one of the things I miss the most here. Yeah, I know about Amazon.de, but they don't have everything I want. And, while the shipping is free, it takes 2 weeks for me to get anything from them (I really miss my Amazon Prime).

I also miss trader joe's.
Monterrey jack, queso fresco and mild cheddar cheese that melts (for Mexican food).
Diners. Especially for breakfast.
Also, I miss my friends and selected family members.

I also miss my audi tt - got rid of it when we left the US. Here I drive a station wagon. Ok, it's an alfa, and it's very cool, and the dog fits in the back...but still...i feel a little sad whenever I see a tt pass me. OMG, I feel like a suburban housewife. And I had to move to Europe for that.

Right, so none of these things are even that important, are they? Well, maybe the friends.

e.

Miss being able to curse the weather. Since moving to Switzerland, I've seen the sun more times than I did in Yorkshire. I just can't stand the sun. I think I'm going to move somewhere wet and cold. Scotland, here I come!

I miss driving down Sunset Blvd. from Hollywood to Malibu. I miss Zuma beach and the taste of salt water on my lips.

I miss aspiring actresses. I miss starving artists and musicians.

I miss ALL the cultures. I wish I can switch culture channels here like we do in L.A.

I miss KCRW.

Most of all, I miss my friends.
