Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss:

- My family and friends
- The ocean
- The energy, pulse, craziness, diversity and can-do attitude of New York City (for some of you NY may be overwhelming; for me it will always be home)
- The shopping, the choices, the better deals
- Reasonably priced restaurants and takeaways and the abundance of ethnic cuisines
- Sunday brunch at Time Café or Florent with its parade of transvestites and other downtown hipsters
- Whole Foods
- Barnes and Noble and The Strand Bookstore
- 92nd Street Y and all the workshops, concerts and lectures

Is this you're old neighborhood? Is that the east or west side?

Hey

This is actually the East Side: http://www.92y.org/

Not my 'hood. I'm an Upper West Sider myself

Hmmmm... I think I should stop before I cry.
Alright, don't cry during this video.

Lati, you'll just have to forgive Randy for the first few verses about NYC.

Now that you've mentioned the windy city, I really miss a thick righteous porterhouse. Why do they have to cut so thin here, and why also cut out the fat?

Just returned from a business trip to the US where I also visited a friend in Chicago (I also used to live there for a while) - can understand you, it really is a cool city, especially in summer....

BTW: except for hbo you can get all the channels you mentioned in CH too. I have digital cable and get around 200 channels including those. Another option is satellite (my father lives in Spain and receives around 500 channels via digital sat, many of them in English).

My girlfriend found it really weird that we put chips in a bun to make a butty. I love them though.

I had lots of Sage & Onion stuffing sent out to me so have packets of them in my cupboard now. I also miss going to the chippy and having my food wrapped in newspaper with salt & vinegar smelling. mmmmmm

Chris
Just come back from a family visit to Uk was craving big fat chips from the chippy really bad. And guess what, they were absolutely gorgeous. Even better than when I lived there. I bought back sage & onion too and golden syrup and birds custard powder and bisto granules so when I cook my fat chips I can pour it all over........yum!!

Its a local company, only in a few villages east of Zurich (GGA Maur). You need to check with your cable provider (the biggest in CH is Cablecom, but then there are some smaller ones). You can take a look at the cablecom website www.cablecom.ch. Though it seems they have a slightly smaller offering than our provider - funny to note that if you sign-up for the sports package you get two porn channels as a free add-on....

Re: What do you really miss the most?

vegetarian restaurants and mexican food, yeah, two things I really miss about the US.

You can sometimes get sweet potatoes here and make your own sweet potato pie, tho I've never made it and don't know how difficult it would be Cakes are also plentiful in bakeries and easy to make on your own.

As others have said, you can get your sports fix with cable....

Re: What do you really miss the most?

mmm...frozen margaritas...going to Texas for the 4th...who wants me to bring back some goodies?

I miss my car...but I'm starting to like the public transportation
Mexican food (tried one restaurant here and it was awful, and the Mexican grocery store was really expensive, but worth it)
Chipotle (even though I'm gonna make my own burritos this weekend)
Target...I miss Target...going to stores after 5pm
I miss people smiling back at you as you pass them on the street..no one smiles here and its depressing
I'd say California weather, but it hailed there today and has been hot, so maybe not
I miss not wanting to buy a 12 pack of coke because it cost $4
I miss being able to go to one grocery store to buy everything..including Tylenol or whatever for a cold..I really hope I don't get sick anytime soon
I miss being able to understand people (but I'm working on that since I started German lessons today..I've only been here 2 weeks)
and of course I miss my friends and family.

The forum has been lots of fun to read though, and it's been helpful, so I am thankful for that, and the mostly beautiful weather here.

I'll drink a frozen margarita for you all in a few weeks though..cheers!

Seriously? A bunch of Reese's Peanut Butter cups. Some Lawry's Taco Seasoning packets would also be cool. A friend of mine is working on these as well.

sure...I plan on going to the grocery stores ...sadly I've already started a list of things I want to buy and bring back, so I'll add those

Oh...cake mixes.. .annoying that they're so expensive here..not sure if they even taste the same, but I had some shipped over when we moved, so that's another thing I'll be bringing back...88 cents <happy dance>

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I hear you on the Mexican food the last time I had a return visit to the states I eat Mexican nearly every day to take care of my craving. I also miss the Sushi restuarants they are everywhere in SanFrancisco and with the freshest fish, the right sized portions and a reasonable price. I miss the 24hour shopping and having things open on Sunday along with the friendly hospitality of the service in restuarants and stores that makes you feel welcome and gives a sense that they want to help you. this common friendliness is not part of the way of life here for example if I go into a bar for a beer and talk with someone that I have never met and tell them about my day they would look at me like i was from another planet.
