I miss... spontaneity and free-spirited people. Despite the fact that I'm living in a foreign country, it seems I rarely encounter anything here that really takes me by surprise or makes me laugh. That's probably why I like the EF so much.
oh, then you definitely need to pop in, spontaneously at that too!! yes, thats the reason why i always find my way back to the EF as well!!

No, its not hormonal, maybe its the crappy summer, but recently, I miss home (south africa), I miss sunny smiles, and home brewed conversation. I miss my mother, and the shoulder I had to lean on, I miss the romance one experienced during the honeymoon phase, I miss the sound of the waves crashing on the shore at night, I miss watching the full moon rise from the ocean from my flat, I miss my sisal carpet, I miss work, I miss family gatherings ( with tons of food and booze)......well clearly I miss alot!

what do you miss? what or whom would you magically conjure up in your living room, if you could?
Mostly miss the sun. Back home it has been sunny and 30-35 degrees for most of he last 2 months. Here every day is crappier than the last.

You are right. I love it here and i would not go back to Cyprus if i can help it (except visits of course) but Switzerland is not home and never will be

ETA. I heard a saying once: "Home is where the heart is"
lets not forget
" the way to a man's heart is through his stomach"

so if we agree with these two proverbs (??!) is home really just a nice cooked meal?

home -- what a strange word

and I've only had one glass of wine so I cant be tonights drunk poster can I!?!

Yeah, I miss that, too. The summers are ridiculously short here! And when the weather's not nice, there's not much to do on Sundays.

Actually thats probably not quite true, I think what I miss is having a partner, companion, lover, best friend etc etc, it really doesnt have to be the ex

I understand you 100%. If anything, most daily life is full of many unpleasant surprises and/or unexpected and frustrating hurdles one must jump over when dealing with bureaucratic matters here in Switzerland.

Also, I miss Target and the Dollar Store. :|

There is a Two Franc Store in Adliswil. It is based on the same premise as the Dollar Store in America. Of course, with Switzerland being as expensive as it is, the store could never be called the One Franc Store...LOL

And that is also the next problem, when home is not exactly home anymore, and you begin to feel that you are missing your 'romantic' memories of home.
Switzerland would never be home for me....or would it?? slowly South Africa is becoming foreign, especially now that 90% of the street names in Durban have been changed. but the worst years is when I am between homes, never really belonging anywhere....which makes you miss 'home' even more!
Can totally relate to that - I often think that I would like to go back to the UK. And it's partially true - some things would certainly be easier (like speaking English obviously) but a lot of things have changed there since I left 15 years ago and the UK I imagine and remember doesn't really exist any more. And that's quite scary - because although I like it here it doesn't feel like my natural home either.

I miss people more than anything. At the moment both of my grandparents are sick (they are in their 90s) and although I'm going home in just over 2 weeks time I have this feeling it'll be the last time I see them, which is an awful thought. I miss them. And I miss the way they used to be when I was a kid growing up.

I do also miss the pub - and Sunday lunch at the pub. And cream teas.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Souvlaki.

Although it might not be comparable to the finest salmon of Scotland that you'd get for dinner in the Four Seasons Hotel of Paris ... still, it does have a special place in my heart (or stomach ).

And a very good friend, with whom we've really shared a lot. But, heh, life goes on, doesn't it?

Re: What do you really miss the most?

1- Nice people. Genuinely nice people. And happy to have visitors from another place. Lived in NYC for 15 years, back to visit a month ago. Had the map out with my husband on the street to plan the subway (if we get this to the sample sale, then catch this to the Yankees...), no less than 3 times did we have people ask us 'hey you need help buddy? And along the way stop at Joe's pub and ask for Charlie. Tell 'em Tom sent ya'. This has happened to us in Italy, London, Scotland, Prague, Frankfurt (of course in their own polite way).

2- Good and even great food at a reasonable price. Sussed out NYC for a high end meal and prices here have me so whacked out -- almost had a heart attack when I learned we could get a 4 course at Daniel (in top 10 in the world) for $150 and dinner that is.....we pay that normally here for an average night out. Again same in other cities (but know this is the economic thing). But still, you get treated so well as they want you to come back and tell people. Recent anniversary dinner, just told them our anniversary and they brought a free cake. NO WAY here.

3- Shopping for anything. Whatever obscure item I need for the house, if I think a store has it and they don't -- 'well ma'am if you go over to so and so's I I know they have it.' Or even for a best price -- we have a good deal, but so and so's has a different line and you might like that better. Check it out first.' These are the kinda things that make you loyal and love a place.

I guess they don't need the word of mouth or frequent customers here. Sigh.

Don't forget, they came into being when two Francs WERE one dollar!

Meanwhile, I miss choice, low prices, good wine, etc.

But that's because I'm on vacation in the US at the moment, Monday we return to civilisation!

What did you expect? You're in Connecticut you ninny. What's there other than suburbs for the 1%. It's like Switzerland only without the mountains or concrete bunker apartment blocs, but all the prices.

And the heat wave will be over on Monday....at least this round.
