I'm confused....crititcizing someone? I most definately did intend to do that. It's called sarcasm re: the gross part

whoa. excuse me.
Tip: postings on the internet can easily be misunderstood. If you use no emoticons like then the meaning of your message might be obvious to you, but not to others, you may be taken literally. No need to escalate a misunderstanding.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

ok then.

my apologies. I thought I was being pretty clear by having it on my list...obviously "cruelly criticizing someone" was NOT my intention.

carry on...as you were then. I must remember to use emoticons in the future I guess.

You probably know this already, but On the Run stores are open on Sundays. You won't find meat, but they do have an adequate supply of things like beer, wine, fresh breads, salad "fixin's"...did I mention beer, wine? We're becoming more and more vegetarian anyway.
The Volg in Mannedorf is open on Sundays. It's small, but there is fresh bread and some meat and usually a nice selection of cheese. They carry wine and beer and chocolate so...in a pinch, it covers all the bases.

By the way, to answer the original question...I don't miss anything that I can't get over here or at least bribe someone to carry in their suitcase for me when they come for a visit. Usually the entrance fee for getting in my door is a jar of creamy Jif peanut butter. And honestly, there are a lot of things I prefer about Switzerland to living in the States. I am very happy to be here.

Re: OK now tell me, what do you miss the most

I find that the fruit and veg here in Basel tastes better than it did back in the UK. Perhaps it is because it hasn't traveled so far? From sunnier climates? Who knows.

Is there a way to get here from Basel using public transport?

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I love it here in Basel but there are a few things I really miss from the UK...
Being able to buy stuff online for bargain prices and never worry about having topay the postman when they arrive!
Getting bargains...period! I used to pride myself in being able to find cheap presents, unusual and cheap stocking fillers, books, CD's etc. I can't even rely on ebay now as I still get hit with charges when the goods arrive. Sigh!
Indian and chinese takeaways
Sweet popcorn in the cinema
the big range of organic meat and veg at Tesco and Sainsbury's

Get where? To get here from Basel? Don't move Where is the here you're referring to?

Same here. I've given up.

Also, what you might want to do in the future is to combine the answers for several posts into one, like I've done here. And make sure you quote your answer, otherwise you'll get smartass responses like my first one - since I had no clue what you were asking!

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss:
1. Fried chicken (KFC)
2. My friends
3. Nice, warm weather
4. Mangoes!
5. Affordable sushi
6. shopping until 9 pm and on Sundays

Not necessarily in that order.

I am from Singapore.
What i miss (not in ranking order)

1. KFC chicken (for those who need to ask, don't)
2. Friends to hang out with, in coffee shops, just talking cock (talking aimlessly and stupidly)
3. Shops which stay open til 10pm or more.
4. Mama's cooking and incessant mothering.
5. Warm sweaty humid weather (i hardly break a sweat here)

HAT
Dear HAT,

Re: Your Number 2 above.

Excellent choice - if you fly to Manchester (SWISS Destination of the Month!! Such a classy airline!), after landing you will soon reach Passport Control.

Grasp your Passport firmly and present it to Her Majesty's Officer.
Say clearly "I'm coming to Manchester to talk cock"

When you get back to Switzerland (possibly on the same aircraft) let me know what happened.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I had a visitor this week and she was asking for chip dip.

something I had totally forgotten about! in my year here, amidst missing alot of other items from Canada (N.A. in general I guess) I had totally skipped over chip dip.

so we improvised and tried to make our own with sour cream and onion soup mix...but it just wasn't reaaaaallly cutting it.

so I'm adding chip dip with Ruffles rippled chips.

I have to wait until March still for my Clamato to show up with my aunt.

I used the conditional tense - if someone were to criticize another person in this thread, it would be cruel. Though my comment is months old now, I do remember my intent very clearly as it hasn't changed.

I didn't accuse anyone of anything, so there isn't anything to be misunderstood here. I was just trying to say that none of us here should be ashamed for missing our homeland's little oddities, how ever unheathy they are!

I just kept sensing people's embarrassment in this thread - whether it concerned , KFC, marmite, vegemite, Kraft dinner. No one has to apologize! It's more of an "air your dirty laundry" kind of thing.

I second the motion!

And I don't mean 1/3 less fat Ruffles, or 1/2 fat Ruffles or baked Ruffles or even Olestra fat-free Ruffles! I miss the original real ones!

I have figured out that the dip thing is hard to do here because Swiss sour cream is far superior to what we had in the States. Here it is so smooth and creamy that it is too viscous for dip-making. What to do? Mix in some firm yogurt and you lighten it up at the same time. (haven't tried this yet)

I have very mixed views on "lightening" certain things. In the case of chip dip, I'm almost sure it is sacrilegious.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I miss swimming in the warm turquoise sea, I miss having a house big enough to own 2 great danes, 6 cats and an indeterminate number of tortoises. I miss the call of the Imam (though, if I have my window open I can sometimes hear it here). I miss the blazing sky, the souk, the smell of a carpet shop, the central fish market where I could buy 4Kgs of fresh swordfish for the equivalent of CHF 24. I miss pruning the bougainvillea with my machete, though I don't miss the wounds that naturally accrued. I miss my friend, and the most impressive organiser I have ever met, Klaus, barbecuing a piglet on Friday. I miss scuba diving. I miss my daughter. I miss following my boss to Dubai at 250 kph in my wife's previous car. I miss chewing fresh Qat with the Omani gardeners (I brought beer and music, they brought Qat and curry). I miss the smell of home.
