Re: What do you really miss the most?

I really miss quality fruit and vegetables which actually taste real, without having to go to Globus and Jemoli all the time.

Each time I go to Migros, I end up with advocados as hard as cricket balls, although they have stickers on them stating that they are "just ready to eat". The salads taste of nearly nothing, and the tomoatoes have all the right colours and shapes, but do not taste of anything at all.
At least in the UK, one can find all the fresh fruit and veg properly ripened in Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda etc. I would have expected the big two Migros and Co-op to be able to do better.

I enjoy a lot of the high standards that Switzerland has to offer, but the supermarkets if they are really "giving the people what they want" are a rip-off for anyone with a slightly imaginative diet.

I also having a good curry without having to pay for the white tablecloth service. luckily, we found a place in winterthur which understand this.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

Let see....

1) Pancita (a mexican soup that is great for hangovers and upset stomachs due to excessive drinking) at 4am in the morning after a joyous night of drink and debauchery

2) Fish tacos (which I used to eat everytime I went to San Diego)

3) The 2 x $1 carnitas tacos that I used to eat in East LA - darn were they good

4) Dr. Wilkinson's Hot Springs Resort in Calistoga - great mud baths and massages5) Weekend trips to Mendocino

6) Long drives around Half-Moon Bay

7) Thanksgiving at our lodge in the Adirondacks

Re: What do you really miss the most?

I found fresh, ready to eat avocados at a lil guy who sells fruit and stuff near Central.
actually, down a bit further towards the lake.

and he only charges 1chf, not 2.50 like the stores.

I can't think of the closest tram stop, but next time I go I'll make sure to look for that.

2. Warren Wald (doing his version of Eye of the Tiger in Popidol)
1. It's got to be Robert Unwin. His version of Barbie Girl is absolutely awesome!!

Re: What do you really miss the most?

i dont get why some of you kind of complain about meat?
the filets...steaks they offer in CH/ZH are ace!
maybe they dont use that much anabolic steroids in it?

not enough bars in ZH? hä? kreis5/4, niederdorf and seefeld nearly consist of bars. and compared to munich.. zürich got a lot of more pubs, that have far more than standard beer like crappy fosters, kilkenny and guinness but a large variety of ales, bitters and lagers. of course no one can have a tap of all your local beer.

how come you cant talk "cock"? sorry, is there (where?)some censorship squad watching what you are saying?

no good italian restaurant around... my advice is "cucina" and "cinque" in kreis5. if you dont like it...please tell me your better one if i dont have to go to Mars for having a pizza/ a decent italian dish there->good stuff. beside of these two, i have been to rapperswil yesterday. i forgot the name of that trattoria on the lake promenade but i had a fantastic and delicious swordfish steak with aubergines and zucchini on safran risotto. yeah, i blew 50 sfr for it but it tasted delicious.

stores close early? ok, if each one of you is a kind of nighthawk and likes shopping around midnight...point for you. but i think until 9 pm one can do the shopping, dont you? so you have the chance in ZH to go for shopville and the coop pronto around my place opens each day until 11pm. fair enough. ( i wont blame none of you for bitching. i know what that thread means. its just the cherry topping on the cake if you could have your missing stuff here. i had hard discussions with people telling me to go back if think "...everything is shit here!" thats not the point, complete missunderstanding from our swiss folks. i/we like it here much, but long occassionaly for certain things to consume or to have. thats all, right?)

but what am i missing? grocery shopping isnt satisfying at all compared to i am/i was used to in germany. the variety of products when it comes to joghurt, cereals and nice bread is weak. coffee is what i miss. my decent dallmayr one. the kebabs and falafel are crap compared to berlin/leipzig döner, falafel, lamacun, schawarma...any turkish dish. even newpoint is not much more then a laugh and you blow a fortune to have a kebab or falafel.

and i miss my BECK´S! less bars serve it, serve german beer, a shame. at least i get "staropramen" in some pubs, phew! the swiss "beer culture" is non existent/pathetic. beside of that swiss lager, swiss beer in general tastes shite...how come sechseleuten is without a beerstand, fresh beer from the tap...? what the hell is wrong with you guys?

i miss munichs beergarden. i never could imagine that i might like to chill under big green trees havin a decent "mass" of augustiner beer.
it is such a chill.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

What I miss.... Man it going to be a long list, but here it goes.

Eggspectation restaurants - a propre Man's breakfast (eggsbenedict or eggs on toast, grilled potatoes, bacon, beans, strawbery smoothie or a freshly squeezed OJ) at 4 pm.

Cali style sushi. Nope the Swiss can be handed a piece of grilled haddock or some gelatine substance on rice and pretend it's actually good.

Take-outs galore. Self explanotary.

Proper strip clubs. Brothels are not my thing and there is nothing better then a good boys night out in a Montreal strip bar.

Shops opened on Sundays. 54/55 days of my life utterly wasted every year in Switzerland.

Parking. I miss just getting out of my car, throwing the keys to the valet and walking off or at worst just not stressing about looking for 30 minutes for some tiny parking spot, that would be too short for a Twingo.

Good cinemas. Fribourg cinemas are total rip-offs and without AC, you sweat in summer.

Vibrant club scene. Zurich has some decent clubs, but it's either overstimulated fomer Yougoslavia types or German stiffs who nurse a beer all night long. Geneva is whatever.

Hand washes. I hate washing my car, in Canada you find a car was every street corner almost the same price as washing the car yourself and you get a proper cleaning by a group of people, interior-exterior-waxing.

Non Nazi traffic enforcement. Note to Swiss police, the Third Reich is over. I've NEVER sweated being over the limit in Canada (within reason of course). Lausanne to Geneva has 20 traffic cameras.

Smoked meat Poutine.

Big city vibe.

Big city/country mentality.

Open mindedness.

Cheap Private Flying (airplane rental, no landing fees etc.)

Cheap and quality real estate. I almost bought a condo in Montreal. 500K, like a playboy's Miami penthouse. Downtown, ALL equiped (except for furniture) 20th floor, concierge, pool etc. Here that money gets you a buncker like shack in some god fosaken canton.

That's some of the stuff.

Ok, rant over.

Re: What do you really miss the most?

The thing I miss most since leaving Canada is the extra 2 or 3 weeks in the year. Man, I used to get so much more done.

Now I better insert a smiley so people realise I'm making a joke, so here goes:

What do I miss the most?

Open minded people and less double moral standards.

Oh, and no, I am not thankful that I have the possibility to live here as I do not think that the rest of the world is so unpleasant as many Swiss people might think. Why I am still here? My boyfriend is Swiss...
