Re: Zurich to Basel Daily Commute - should i move?

Dear All,

I would like to hear what people think about moving to Basel from Zurich? I have been commuting for 1.5 years from Zurich to Basel and now it seems the job is more permanent than originally thought.

My personal life is about to change in that we need a larger apartment 4-5 rooms and given my commute, this needs to be reasonably close to the station in Zurich which means 3'000chf plus. I look at Basel and I see the same within walking distance from the office for 2'500chf. As taxes would be higher, the costs are the same in the end, but I would have 3 hours more in my day and my evenings back.

I prefer Zurich as a city - the lake is fantastic in the summer, the restaurants and general buzz. But, I do like Basel, it's more down-to-earth place, seems to be things here if you search a bit more. I am finding it difficult to settle into Zurich as a non-German speaking commuter due to time (and effort to some extent).

So would you move? Has anyone done this specifically that can let me know if it was the right thing with all factors taken into account?

Many thanks!

Have you been down to the Rhine in Basel in summer, either for the promenade or for a swim? Popped over the border to the Black Forest for a walk or skiing? Gone over to the Wine Festivals over the other border in the Alsace? Been to Fasnacht, Herbstmesse, the jazz festival or the Tattoo?

There's plenty to do in and around Basel, and without the commute you'll have another two hours a day in which to do it.

Re: Zurich to Basel Daily Commute

Denman, I would move if I were you.

3 hours of your life daily is a lot of time; besides Basel is wonderful place. There are a lot of English-speaking friendly people; as well as very friendly locals. Lots of people say that people from Basel are much more open-minded than Zurich people, but this may be personal experience as well.

Re: Zurich to Basel Daily Commute

I did zurich-basel commute for sometime but it just too much unless you live and work closer to station. If you don't want to move to Basel then another options are to move to Aarau or Lenzburg, these are pretty good places and rents are cheaper than in Zurich, e.g. Aarau -Basel is 30min commute and Aarau-zurich is about 25min.

How bad would a daily commute from Zurich to Basel be? Does anyone actually do this? If it is common, are the trains very crowded?
It's very common. I did the other way for 2 years.

It was a bit miserable though - 1hr 25 or so door to door, and the hour on the train was great for reading and offline working, but when I'd been working late, it was just tiresome. Luckily, I didn't have to be there for Swiss time (8am or so and I normally aimed for 9amish) so the train wasn't too crowded. Now I have a 1-hour commute and it feels wonderful in comparison.

Re: Zurich to Basel Daily Commute

I have known of five year olds who have been doing the daily train commute between Basel and Zurich - but I don't recommend it. As said by others, there are a lot better things to do with that time, rather than sit on a train.

Basel is great - there are clubs, groups, people doing a huge variety of activities - no reason to be bored.

Re: Zurich to Basel Daily Commute

Two of my cousins live in Basel and commute to Zurich everyday for university. They say its fine. There loads of trains running frequently and it is no hassle and gives them time to calm down and chill after a hard day of work.

Re: Zurich to Basel Daily Commute

Probably works out if you are single. When you arrive home each night after your kid has gone to bed and have to leave the house before he wakes up, the novelty wears off fairly quickly.

It's all about quality of life. I would much rather do my chilling in a bar or in front of the telly with a glass of malt than on a train with lots of commuters with personal hygiene issues.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Zurich to Basel Daily Commute

Thanks all for your comments. I think I will look for a short term move to Basel to see how it goes, then decide on that basis.

Now, to the appropriate thread for accommodation..
