For a decent existence:

- Single: starting at 6000 CHF per month
- Married: starting at 8000 CHF per month (hopefully both earn)
- Married with 1 kid: 9000 CHF per month
- Married with 2 kids: 10000 CHF per month

If you want to talk about a very comfortable existence, i.e. 100sq meter flat or larger, 1 foreign vacation per year, skiing at least 6 days, car, eating out once a week, then add 2000 CHF to above figures.
Myself and my Fiancé spend less than 3000chf a month on general living between us, and we don't live in a cheap area!!!! Obviously there are one off things not included in that such as a holiday or new skis etc. To suggest we need a minimum of 8000 is a bit off the mark in my opinion.

Surely there must be places in Switzerland where prices are lower than that? For example the Migros and Coop restaurants in central Zurich. A coffee must be about 4 CHF and an apple strudle about 4 CHF too. So that would be 16 CHF instead of 37 CHF. That's less than half.
Except sometimes you don't want to sit in a generic food hall, with average food, and below average coffee...

Most people say that Starbucks coffee is average...I doubt there is really much difference in the quality of the food or coffee.

True it isn't really glamourous to sit in a Migros or Coop restaurant but that was just an example. There must be local coffee shops or tea rooms that are just as cheap.

Starbucks - yuk! But yeah, I'm sure there are other places which are on the cheaper side, and are OK.

Re: How much you really need to live in Switzerland?

I am living on a budget:

I am trying to survive officially on 18,000 chf per annum.

Cost per month:

Rent in shared apartment 500
Food and cleaning materials 400
Health Insurance 240

But not much of a life !

I was called into the Swiss Tax Office but was able to prove I could live on this and they now leave me alone.

Actually I don't need to live in Switzerland at all.

Ahh the joys of the English language

(Edit: but yes Tom, I choose to live here, for now)

I am leaving. Switzerland is great. It really is, but I think London is even better. The trouble is that I came to Switzerland after having lived in central london. Whilst Zurich was a nice change, after a while you come to miss the things such as the huge amount of culture that london has to offer. Dinining out opportunities in london are also much more varied and incredibly more reasonably priced. In fact that would be my biggest gripe about Swiss (Zurich) living. It's the cost of eating out. For example, only this morning I popped into a coffee shop for two lattes, and two apple strudles....the price....37 francs.....and that was in Wollisofen, hardly central zurich prices.

the strudelhaus enge charged me 2 strudel plus 2 tea 42 chf.

We are a family of 4. Im a housewife, kids are 8 (going to local school) and 1 yr old. We spend 6k a month. We eat out, do grocery shopping every/every other week in Germany and my husband and daughter walk to work/school everyday.

I think I have missed something. Are strudels now made with edible gold?

Official "Existenzminimum":

- 2,200 Fr. for a single person
- 3,400 Fr. for a couple
- 4,600 Fr. for a family of 4

So anything more than that has to be good!

As a family of 4 spending 6k, our life is comfy but very simple. Were not into drinking and dont smoke. We try to enjoy activities that dont cost much like going to the forest or parks. We even shop in germany and only buy food in CH for emergency. My kids have a room each but its tiny as our whole apartment is tiny. In that 6k, everything is included except our summer vacation which was last year in Asia and this year will be in the US.

Is that a monthly gross income or after tax?
