Ah! Country life !

I had to smile when I read the post in the Complaints area, by Castro about a cyclist constantly hijacking part of his parking slot. We live just outside a little village in Kt. Bern and we have our own 4,200 sq. m. of field behind our house.
I got up a bit late one morning and saw a herd of cows on our field behind the house. My husband hadn't noticed them (!) so I was a bit mystified. I went out the back door to walk up and stroke the cows and nearly fell over a 50kg sack of potatoes, a 10kg sack of carrots and 2 dozen eggs with a hand-scribbled note on top.
Apparently the field belonging to a farmer from the other end of the village had experienced flooding due to heavy rain in the night and because too much water on a field can cause health problems for cattle, he was desperate to find a field FAST to put his cows on and had brought them from his field, through the forest behind the village to our field and fenced them in at some ungodly hour of the morning.
He came past that evening with his mobile milker and his son to milk the cows and I said it was fine - the spuds, carrots and eggs were more than enough payment and weren't really necessary.
So since then, it's got round that if anyone needs a bit of extra pasture land for cows, sheep or goats, they could use our field in exchange for some potatoes, eggs or anything else they may have. (I have also received legs of lamb and steak)
And if they can't spare anything, or forget, well that's alright too. The grass grows for free and the sound of sheep or cow bells is lovely.

Re: Ah! Country life !

What a nice story. I imagine I'd be quite surprised if a dozen cows or so appeared on my land one morning.

By the way, have you considered to offer a part of your land for youth camps on Pentecost and during the summer holidays? Scouts and other clubs are always searching them. The most important index of youth camping sites is maintained by the charity Pfadistiftung.

I think I am going to have to delete this post and ban the author. I'm sure this is illicit advertising...
Anyway, I remember from years long ago and Cevi Whitsum camps under canvas, it always rained the whole weekend and your field would be all nasty and muddy afterwards.

Seriously I think it might be a great idea to consider letting a group use it. Friendly owner and a co-operative neighbour in an emergency would be a super combination.

Thanks for sharing this story! So sweet! This farmer was lucky to pick your field since you were so gracious about it. Nice story, gives a break from some darker posts and comments I've been reading lately (must be the season ).

It is inspiring to hear similar stories how people can surprise here in Switzerland That's a good sign for friendship with lots of diaries and vegetables on the table
