Maybe the reason why someone goes to live in another country plays an important part too ... sometimes there is simply no reason to stay in one's own country ... therefore no reason to be homesick either.

When I feel homesick, I like to look at my ranch on the Google.

Frustration and homesickness are closely related in my case. And what I am calling my home isn't even my native land. Confusing ...
Well, some countries you live for a month and feel like a local. I have lived in Switzerland a total of close to 10 years and I still feel like a tourist.

It really looks as if most people just need to get a hold of some food or drink from their home country and they feel already so much better !!!

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I left my home country 16 years ago, 4 of which I've lived here. I miss things about all the places I've lived in, the one place I'd love to go back to isn't my home country anyway! I do miss things about eh UK, when I get homesick, I go home - or to what used to be hom anyway :-)

Its a great comfort blanket to know that Blightyland is only 90 mins away, so in that sense I don't really get homesick.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

Home is the furtherest point from the mother-in-law

So Switzerland is almost perfect

on a side note after 10years in Switzerland and 12+ years out of Oz, here is home now... sometimes i get down because of some of the negative aspects of Switzerland but then I remember that the negative things are everywhere and I look at the positive things about Switzerland and remember why I love this place

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I do get bouts of homesickness, but a short trip to the UK usually dispels my rose-tinged recollections, starting with the sweaty, chaotic hole that is Heathrow, the multi-hour long traffic jams, the parochialism and persistent whinging. While I love my country (England), and will defend her to the hilt, I would not have jumped ship if the bad hadn't outweighed the good in my case.
As with a previous poster, I often meet up with old school friends in the pub who never left the village, and briefly wonder about what it would be like to live nextdoor to all my friends and relatives, but once the travel bug has bitten (and it got me aged 5 or so), it is impossible to re-narrow your horizons.

The best thing about a short trip back to England is that once there I start to feel both thin (and I am really not), and rich (hooray for the free-falling GBP).

Cheers

Jim

Had a recent incident of moping. Air Canada is advertising direct flights to Montreal from Geneva. The ad has the pic of the skyline for the 514 (Montreal). Had to go home and watch some Quebec shows...

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

Strangely enough, I don't have a first-hand experience of being homesick. Home is where I set up house. I do keep in touch with friends and family from back home and elsewhere by email and through Facebook - that helps a lot, I guess. Learning to cook a lot of Malaysian food helps, too.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

Dunno... depends what country I'm missing....
I'll travel far for a Reeses peanut butter cup and will go just as far for some lovely home made scones with strawberry jam,
I'll get ansy, and go for a lovely walk along the peaceful lac Léman, and consider I'm living in the most beautiful place.
I get very homesick whenever I'm away from Switzerland

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I try to go home as often as possible (about once every 6 weeks - seriously trying to convince my girlfriend to change to an every other weekend schedule or even move our "main" residence to Vienna and only come to CH for work during the week).

Usually, coming back to CH makes me feel very depressed (just came back tonight ). I've lived in different places - only one where I felt serious homesickness was Switzerland.... when I lived in the US, for example, I never felt homesick because I had friends and an intact social network - here this is lacking.

I go home as often as possible, to my real home and adopted home. Or just cross a border, any one, for a day or two. If not I would suffocate completely. Landlocked countries do not suit me!

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

Living in Switzerland is like being in love with your wife or girlfriend - you don't miss the old ones.
I have not once been homesick, and I am a huge sentimentalist.
Being here is just the biggest privilege on this planet.

...except when the weather is crap.

So what do you do when you get homesick?

I mean I am Swiss and live here but when I was away I usually craved some food or drink.
Or I would listen to Swiss Radio International.
Or have friends and family come visit me ...

So what is your consolation while living here in Switzerland ?
Google street view.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I absolutely love winter with snow sports because this season has glamour on its own. In spring/summer time, I start feeling homesick because it reminds about SA and wonderful weather whole year round. Especially the days like today when the weather is kaak make me more depressed. I usually try to make a braai/BBQ eat lots of meet and watch sports on TV (that's only when I am too exhausted to do the sports myself).
