Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I get some real mexican food (not burritos, not chili con carne) and start to remember why I wanted to get out of Mexico: bad schools, polluted environment, bad salaries, impossible work conditions, expensive hospitals, corruption, insecurity...

Then I call my family and watch a good mexican TV show.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I have a rule and it works most of the time... depends on how keen you is to make it work...

"home is where the heart is"

You can make your home anywhere in the world but you must be prepared to make a effort to keep in contact with friend and family as much as possible... Skype and SMS and phone calls.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I got homesick (listening to too much Vaughan-Williams), so I went home.

It was lovely! Curry, ale, crown green bowling, cathedrals...

I'm all set for another couple of years in Switzerland now...

I found myself going through a drive through my old stomping ground using Google Street View. Much cheaper way of finding out that not much has really changed.

The best thing about a short trip back to England is that once there I start to feel both thin (and I am really not), and rich (hooray for the free-falling GBP).

Cheers

Jim

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

whenever I get homesick there are couple of things I do:

* I tell myself " You will be here fo only 2- 3 years you better enjoy this. you are not coming here again." That makes me feel so wonderful..Never coming back here..wow..bliss

* If this doesnot work my husband takes me for long drive into the villages and the scenic locations. I love photography and this helps.

" Then if it is raining I paint, blog and surf the internet and wonder why my own countrymen don't talk to each other .. They are more crazier than the swiss

* Lastly I think about cockroaches , mother in law and other things I don't like which are back home whom I dont have to see here..

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

i am feeling really homesick. came for love and to experience life where i thought it might be better. not sure life is actually better here, only that i dont face open aggression daily. have come from oz where aggression is pretty rife: passive and open. i have found switzerland just has a more passive aggression mentality. also the language barrier is just huge, and have found quite a lack of professionalism in the sector of employment i am trying to find work in. the string you along, tell you lies, lead you on, change details from what they offer you verbally and what is offered on paper, then tell you that you surely you could have figured it out when you point out that perhaps they have made a mistake. processes take forever and every form you feel out for status purposes requires money, money, money. very frustrating.

anyway, not sure how long i will last. but today, i feel really, really homesick. cant get on that plane, i know i wont come back!

I love the fact that I don't face much aggression here. People are way too stressed and uptight in Sydney and want to pick a fight at the smallest opportunity. That's the main reason why I will never go back.

The only time I ever get homesick is when I'm back in England. Pretty much from the point I land I'm wanting to get back to Zürich.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

When I get homesick, funny enough, cooking food from home, calling friends or family or streaming local radio stations online compounds it even further!

I will tend to go out and pamper myself and doing girly things. I tend to feel better after that. Having come from a concrete jungle, a good long run down by the river or up in the forest also always help to clear my thoughts and make me realise how lucky I am to be able to enjoy such beautiful scenary at my doorstep.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

when i get homesick i drink rooibos tea (imported, the stuff from coop is revolting) and dream of biltong and rumpsteak with knorr peppersauce...i then end up inviting other homesickers and cooking something similar - the effort before they arrive and after they leave is enough to send endorfins through your veins and make you feel happier...

i also watch vetkoekpaleis or orkney snork nie (slapstick afrikaans comedy on dvd) and listen to corny afrikaans music from kurt darren or eden (they really are droolable!)

needless to say, my family loves it when i get homesick, they eat like kings, we laugh like crazy africans and we phone the whole world!

the only time i get suicidal is when i want to watch rugby or cricket and get 'penalised' because i'm in the northern hemisphere - that makes me mad enough to listen to the rugby/cricket on the radio - which is a bit archaic!

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

If I'm Homesick:

Drink a few beers and a few tots of good scotch, and cook up a feast from back home.

Once the booze has taken effect and tears are about to shed, pick up the phone and call close friends around the world who have also left home, and reminisce about the old days.

p.s. the hangover the next day is pretty harsh and might even make you feel worse !

I so much relate to you.... Thanks for your note as I see I am not the only one that does the things you describe.... It is terrible to feel homesick! Specially if you come from Miami Beach!

Browse job boards excessively during work hours to find a job that will get me out of here.

Drive to Germany to buy some good steaks at Lidl, grill them & eat them.

Or buy good whole chicken at Aldi or Lidl and make beer can chicken with my own BBQ sauce.

Search the Web for cheap airfare and buy tickets for a 2-week vacation without even asking the boss or the bride.

Look at old pictures, find our old house on Google Maps / Satellite / Streetview, talk to old friends on Skype, watch American movies, listen to country radio or NPR ...

Long list. Plenty of homesick.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I was in the UK for a few days last week on a course. As I was leaving Manchester Airport by taxi, I passed under a bridge where someone was about to jump off, onto the motorway. The taxi driver seemed less shocked than me. 'That's the fifth one this month,' he said.

This immediately cured me of any homesickness I might have been feeling.

Re: So what do you do when you get homesick ? ? ?

I just happen to be having a madly homesick few days (please dont abuse me with the 'boat leaves in the morning' stuff, I am just having a bad time of it) and now having read this thread, the tears are falling quick and fast.

We have been away most weekends for 5 weeks now, weddings, Christenings, baby arrivals, and I think that has really unsettled me, and I have been reminded so often about how homely 'home' feels. I decided to swim the Seeuberqueerung yesterday to try to reconnect with CH and see whether creating new challenges here might help....having been kicked in the shoulders and face many a time without so much as an apologetic glance, it has done little to make me feel better, though at least I got some exercise!

Anyway, off to Jersey again tomorrow, so no doubt I'll be feeling the same next week, so should not put too much energy into fixing myself today. Its a bad state of affairs for CH when you comment at how friendly the Immigation Officials are at Heathrow Airport.

It comes in waves every so often. I either wallow in it until it passes, or call up a friend and go out and have fun.
