I just got laid off

I am in a state of shock. I helped the company reach record results this year. And now because of some delayed orders for next year due to the credit crunch, I get the axe. My boss trying to save his own ass. Shock. What the hell am I going to do. This is probably the worst time to be without a job in the last 50 years. I have a family to support. Advice, please.

Re: I just got laid off

Karl, have you been employed for at least 12 months? if so you will be entitled to unemployment payment which should tide you over during this uncertain period.

With respect to your former boss, I would take it in your stride and just try and leave that place with your dignity and good references intact. You should hopefully find something soon, the beginning of the year is usually a good time due to new budget allocations etc.. and once bonuses are paid out a lot of people hand in their notices

Best of luck

Re: I just got laid off

That makes two of us...... Cheer up, there are worse countries to be unemployed.

Have you been in Switzerland for the past two years? If so, have you made 12 contributions to the RAV? If that is the case, you might entitled to recieve unemployment during app 18months. If you have a family, it will be, if memory serves me well, 80% of you salary up to 108k per annum.

Ask for you termination letter and get your your AHV (aka grey) card plus permit and go to your RAV office without further delay, they will be able to inform you better.

You can find a wealth of information in these 2 threads:

I think I am about to lose my job...

RAV registration and benefit payable.

For your closed RAV office, check here:
http://www.rav.zh.ch/internet/vd/awa...standorte.html

There is another web site has most documents you have to fill, plus check lists and what you can expect from the authorities

http://www.jobarea.ch/

Also, negotiate you reference letter. If you plant to stay on this part of the world, you will need it. Make sure it says that have sacked you due to reorg.

you might find this thread useful to read between the lines:
http://www.englishforum.ch/employmen...-q-thread.html

If this makes you feel better, market is not as good as it was 1 year ago, but it is not also that bad either.... worse thing now is that everybody is waiting for what is going to happen, and nothing never happens because everybody is waiting.. Probaby in Q3, things will start to move either for worse or better. At least, that is what i am hoping for.

thanks, Lucy. I appreciate your help. Yes, I have been working at my job for 2 years, and have been working in CH now for 21 yrs, so I know the ropes and benefits here more or less. Me experience unfortunately has been that getting older here is not necessarily beneficial. The over 45's are discriminated against...many job ads even state the age range they are looking for, usually 45 is the cutoff. I just feel so lousy right now. I don't even want to tell my wife or friends. I am just going to keep my mouth shut so I don't spoil xmas for everyone. Damn, this really sucks.

Re: I just got laid off

I have had several friends laid off in the UK over the last few months and the advice I gave them has always been to have a one hour consultation with an employment lawyer plus maybe another hour to negotiate the redundancy agreement.

They have always got back more than they paid via increased pay out plus other advice such as signing off sick due to stress for a couple of weeks, etc. Now this was in the UK rather than CH and was in the IT and scientific fields, but it has to be a good idea at such an emotional time to have a professional dispassionately look after your interests and make sure that you don't do something that is counter to your interests in the long term.

Re: I just got laid off

my almost 49 year old boyfriend, also lost his job in September, and he managed to find a new one in 3 weeks, actually much better the one he had. Depending on your line of business, I don't think it is age will automatically disqualify you...

Please tell your wife. I am sure she would feel more upset about any deception, and not having been there for you, than she would about the actual situation.

Beyond that I am really sorry to hear your news and wish you all the best in getting things sorted.

Re: I just got laid off

Sorry to hear about it.

Try not to bear any grudges (I know it's difficult) and simply move on.

Go to register at the RAV nearest to you on monday:
http://www.rav.zh.ch/internet/vd/awa...standorte.html

The job situation isn't that bad at the moment. At least not as bad as people seem to imagine.

Hi Karl, so sorry to hear this. I don't have any advice pertaining how to get a new job. (aside from what others have posted before me) But i can tell you that i really sympathise with you having been through this also.
I was given some good advice when it happened to me:

" For the first 48 hours after losing your job, focus only on yourself.
This is NOT the time to call everyone you know to begin networking. Talk your feelings over only with family and your close circle of trusted friends, not all of your work colleagues and networking contacts. This is critical. You need time to vent your concerns and emotions. Otherwise you may say things you might regret and you may inadvertently leave impressions upon people that are misinterpreted."

i totally get the shock thing, i always thought "this can never happen to me" but it did.
just so you know, you are not alone and i wish you all the best...

Thanks everyone. Sometimes I feel so damn alone in this weird and beautiful country. Even after 20 years here. I appreciate all of your input, whoever you are, we are all in this great Swiss experiment together.

Karl - I am sorry to hear that. I think swissotter and Castro have given you excellent advice beyond the technicalities of the RAV process.

Hold your head up high, breathe deeply, hug your loved ones, and PM me if you need to go for a drink.

Best of luck!

Re: I just got laid off

Sorry to hear so.

When I saw the headline, I misread it as "I just got laid", so initially i expected a more cheerful thread.

As for being laid OFF, an Employer in UK and Germany MUST give you time off for Interviews during the notice period. I do not know if the same applies here, but I would expect so. Maybe somebody can confirm ?
Assuming you are good in your job, KEEP DOING a good job. Now is the worst time to stop caring, as you do want a good "Zeugnis".

But see it positive. the swiss job market is still WAY better than the UK Job market. at least if you work in IT.

Good luck in the Job Hunt.

Doc.

Hi Karl...sorry to read your news , but its not all bad..it just seems so at the moment. My story, mid 40s when I came to Switzerland on a visiters permit 2 years ago and not speaking German..but got a job no problem.Your story...well I dont know but you are around my age. Man..we have so much experience at our age we are just so darn employable. This isnt the end of your story , this is the beginning of a whole new chapter in your book of life. Be confident knowing you have a heck-of a lot of experience and you,ll get a career advance because you look like you know what your about.
Go for it....and tell your wife and friends. AND GOOD LUCK.

Absolutely correct. The employer MUST give you time you need for interviews. Also, the MUST give you time to actually look for a job, send job applications, etc. The law doesn't specifiy what is "reasonable" time, but is considered adecuate 2 half days in a week. Of you course, you can stretch it as much as you want as long your employer agrees. Just don't ask for days off or vacations when you need them for looking for jbos
