Just had a look for you. According to

http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_pri...x.html?lang=de

Yes, you can only bring your stuff through during opening hours.
You should have researched further:

Tourist traffic
The detailed opening hours are available in the Border crossings and customs offices, opening hours.

For personal goods in tourist traffic, please note the border crossings or customs offices that are marked blue/white or white.
Outside of the clearance hours, you can use the declaration box to declare your personal goods in writing. Information can be found at the following link: Declaration boxes.

Please take note of the Road Traffic Act (e.g. ban on Sunday driving): SR 741.01 RTA.

Medea,

He is moving, which is different from a tourist bringing stuff in. The link I posted specifically states: "Die Veranlagung Ihres Umzugsgutes muss unbedingt während den Öffnungszeiten ".

Re: Border Checks on entering Switzerland and Opening Times at Customs

Oops! Yes, I got it wrong JagWaugh.

I read the following:

Clearance of your household effects must occur during the opening hours of customs offices for merchandise (cf. opening times and addresses of customs offices).

http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_pri...x.html?lang=en

But then saw the other bit which mentions personal goods which I took to mean household effects as well.

As penance you must post at least one entry in my "internet age" poll.

Re: Border Checks on entering Switzerland and Opening Times at Customs

How did it go? How big a van? As Ive said before, I moved some stuff over and crossed the french border at 11pm. Stopped to buy a vignette and they didnt care about anything else. The Rheincenter/Weil crossing they only care about people doing too much shopping and should be deserted after 10pm. There's almost never anyone at the Otterbach crossing even during the day although if they do pull someone over it's usually a van. In the evening they've all gone to bed. Similarly the french crossing near novartis campus. Never anyone there. Then there are the country lanes at the border near the airport -there's not even any customs office. I know you want to do it properly but many many people don't.
