Re: Am I the only African American around Zurich???

This reminds me of Little Britain.

You can't be an African-American cos I'm the only African-American in the village.

Sandgrounder.... if you want to meet me BECAUSE your background is like mine, fine.
Me, if I only wanted to meet people whose background is like mine, I'd have stayed home since that is where most of them are. Different strokes for different folks though.

Otherwise, I am sick and tired of babysitting others who want to 'get to know my race'.
You what? I want to get to know interesting people mainly... find out more about interesting cultures along the way... but I don't want to 'get to know a race', nor do I know anyone else who wants to 'get to know a race'. What do you take us for, some kind of birdwatchers all twitching curtains and ticking off our Life Lists? To be honest I find your presumption (that this would be the only other reason someone could be interested in meeting you) a bit weird and not very pleasant.

Re: Am I the only African American around Zurich???

Sure, there are some cultural things that only black Americans can share. But that doesn't mean others won't understand if explained! And to say your husband doesn't...well, it does make me wonder why you married him if he can't understand you and your cultural heritage. Have you made an effort to understand his?

Everyone can say that people won't understand because they're not X, Y or Z like me. It doesn't make you a special snowflake to be a black person from America.

Re: Am I the only African American around Zurich???

Let me make something clear. I am not new to CH. Have lived here 6 years and in two cantons and three major cities. I am not looking for generic advice for newcomers. I am a dual Swiss/American citizen and have known all sorts of people here.... middle class swiss, educated/global elite swiss, middle cls/global elite americans, brits, french, dutch, germans, italians, and a smattering of working class africans. I am looking to connect with someone who understands the uniqueness of my experience. Having met hundreds of people already who do not share that unique experience why can't i be allowed to meet whomever i wish? Why must i be lectured to?

Listen, sweetheart. You're unique. I'm unique. Sandgrounder is unique. We have all had unique experiences.

Now, you might have been to a flash American university and got yourself an MBA and all that, but you're not as special as you seem to think you are, and you know nothing about Sandgrounder, or anyone else on this forum, or their experiences.

So why don't you cut out the bad attitude and try again?

You might be surprised at what you get back.

Good luck with your search I really do wish you all the best. Seems you've already met everyone in Switzerland and have lived here since time began.

To use an American term, your attitude sucks. Perhaps I was going to suggest someone, then again I've lost all will to help you now.

Have a great day

Yay you! Sure, meet whoever you like (not because you've 'met hundreds of people already' though, because you're human and a grownup and one of the perks is getting to pick your own friends.) But a bit of politeness to the rest of humanity wouldn't go amiss.

I didn't see a lecture, I saw a one-line question - a pretty civil question at that. You don't have to answer it if you don't want to, but no need to take someone's head off just for asking it...

Well, ask nicely and you might get it.

Be rude to the people of this forum and you almost certainly won't.

Can all those people who take these matters lightly and want to make jokes simply go away? I already meet people like you everyday....
Im going to start by telling you that my comment is not in the means to offend you, nor your background etc. Im very friendly, but very honest too.

I am not african or american (USA), Im mexican and I lived in Savannah for almost a year and got to know a lot of people decending from Africa and here and there told me the story about their family, how they manage to survive in the country etc. They were all from different social status but only one thing in common They felt attacked ALWAYS, some times i will even feel scared to talk about something simple because they will feel is about them or their race. If they didnt get a job is because of their color, if the neighbor didnt say hello, everything was because of their backgroung or color and life is not like that.
I am Mexican and very proud of my country, but if I apply for a job and dont get it, I should ask myself which requirement didnt I met. Im not going to blame the employer.
This person didnt offended you, but (as I understood) invited you to open your request because there are more people who would like to meet you. Why do you think that if someone wants to meet you is because they are morbid about your background? Could it be that they want to meet you because they found you interesting? not as African american but as a person?
Your harsh replay made me remember the people I met on Savannah, nice people, but sure needed to talk carefully even about the weather

I am sitting here with my mouth hanging wide open and let me tell you that having been on this forum for sometime, I thought I've seen it all. Apparently not.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to meet who you wish. Like yourself, I am Asian and am a minority here in Switzerland - Europe even. Its great when I meet people from where I am from, or share the same culture. We can laugh, talk, whinge and make certain jokes that only our fellow countrymen can appreciate. But I understand that I belong to the minority and am happy to make friends from all nationalities, backgrounds and culture. I love introducing to friends food and customs from my culture (apparently my Chinese new year dinners are very enjoyable ) and never was tired of "babysitting" anyone. I am proud and very happy to do so.

To say that you are sick and tired of babysitting others who want to know your race simply gives me the impression that you have a massive chip on your shoulder. Not everything is about race. Perhaps the problem doesnt lie with the Swiss (whom have been nothing but perfectly friendly to a minority like myself), but yourself. Its so unfortunate that your family's impression of Switzerland got tarnished due to your tunnel vision and possible unpleasant experiences that they're missing a country with one of the most spectacular scenaries in the world.

Now if you'll excuse me, I simply must go unroll my eyes from the back of my head and push my jaw back up.

Okay. Fair enough. If you people can't read that i only asked to be connected to certain others as the thread suggests, then it is too bad. I am not here to prove anything to anybody. The thread is very specific and clear.... Go lecture somebody else on how and with whom they should conduct their affairs.

(Proud, educated, strong people like us are both threatening and something they can't understand). But, the hardest thing is having a mixed race child who isn't growing up with the love and support of her African-American family or any knowledge of the history and struggle of our people. Unfortunately, for financial reasons and perhaps a little fear and narrow-mindedness, our family have never visited us here in CH. So they have no idea of the real cultural divide and the challenges we face.
1. It's not very nice to generalize and say that the Swiss are threatened by proud, educated and strong people.

2. I have someone very close to me who is bringing up a mixed race child here and she receives a lot of love and support from those around her (Swiss) and her mother tells her all about her heritage. You could do that too.

3. Again, not very nice calling people narrow-minded.

There is even a cultural divide between Swiss people from different cantons too. Please don't feel alone. I know how hard it can be at times and you can get really down and angry but please don't generalize. Who knows, you may also meet someone with a similar background to yours and they could be worlds apart from you. Heaven only knows it has happened to me on many occasions over here.

If I said (of white Europeans): "...Proud, educated, strong people like us are both threatening and something that black Americans can't understand", you would be rightly livid.

Has it occurred to you that the lack of empathy you've received in this country might be less to do with your perceived "uniqueness" and more to do with a supercilious and unpleasant attitude?

Your attitude really does stink, I think a MBA in manners is needed.

Ask politely for someone to help you and they will. Don't launch into a post with "no one else understands my or could sympathise" there are 61000 people registered on this forum and I'm sure many including myself were willing to help you until you came here with your higher than thou attitude.

BTW who gives a F there are PHD's on here why should we care less about your MBA?
