Police Stop

I did quite a bit of driving today around the German part of Switzerland and there were Police checks all over the place. It looked more than a Vignette check. Did anyone get stopped today?

Yep, it's that time of year again.

Not only that, but the early morning checks at the autobahn entrance
ramps looking for those too lazy to scratch clean more than a fist-sized
hole in the ice on the windshield!

Re: Police Stop

The same here in the French part. Plenty of police presence and checking drivers license and car papers. But its been like that for months now.

For more police presence, this has been announced that it would be so. Also more presence in inner cities.

Aren't there vignette readers on the motorways that check for cars without valid ones?

Those expensive masts, readers and cameras are mainly for the truck
traffic on the Autobahn. They are charged so much for each time they
travel under one of those. At least, that is how I understand how it
works. If I am wrong, then surely someone will correct me.

They, as far as I know, do not read the personal automobile traffic with
regards to the Autobahn vignette.

Re: Police Stop

Should you be stopped, stay in the vehicle. Where I'm from I'm perfectly free to get out of my car if stopped, unlike for example in the US (as I understand it).

I was stopped on one occassion here and opened the door to approach the officer. He had his pistol out and was screaming for me to get back in. It wasn't the first time someone pointed a gun at me that day, but still, it's probably best to let them come to you.

<Sigh>

Civil liberties, eh?

Good info... and so true!

When looking for an answer to WHY to stay in the car...
Put yourself in the shoes of the approaching cop. If someone comes
out of their car at me, hands could be hidden (holding the door, supporting
off the seat, etc.), it could be holding a weapon. I would do the same
thing.

Safety.

Re: Police Stop

LOL ... Wake up UM... Wake up! You are dreaming

The local cops love to set up camp in the blind corners and curves to
allow their prey to unknowingly wander into their greedy little traps.

There is a long stretch of Autobahn that does a slow right curve between
Sevelen/Vaduz and Trübbach/Balzers on the A13. The Autobahn cops
set some newbie in the bushes in the median (thin, very thin, little
bushes, only a guardrail between himself and the maniacs from
Germany driving at 150+ to Italy. Located stragetically shortly after
the Sevelen entrance ramp to the South... just enough distance that
the cars entering the Autobahn can just get up to speed, plus some

This guy's job is to clock the speeders, and radio the car, color and (if
possible) tag numbers. Further down the Autobahn, the traffic slows...
everybody into the left lane... Then, there they are... about six cop cars
(four cops to a car) and a bus or two are there waiting on those
caught in action! Usually they have a number of cars, motorcycles
and even trucks (safety inspection) pulled over to the right and
awarding them with tickets to the policeman's ball

Now, that is major police action here in Rheintal

Re: Police Stop

Thought I'd bump this in case you've forgotten to stick on your new Vignette. I saw 3 police checks end of last week - 2 of them were actually on the motorway itself (as opposed to the approach roads like last year). I saw a copper with a small telescope radioing to his chums a km or so further up the road who had coned off one lane. Loads of cars were being stopped, you have been warned!

Are you sure they were SMSing? They could have been setting their Facebook status, or maybe twattering? Or twittering?

Sorry, definitely twittering.

How long do they continue these vignette controls? Has anyone ever been controlled, excepting border crossings, after March?
