Why not create a calendar event with the details of the meeting point? It's more friendly and you might get some "last minute deciders" to join you.

Cheers,
Diem

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

"What a difference a year makes"

It's a real pointer to me how much the forum has evolved during this past year. When i wanted to let people know about the Sechselaüten my thread was met with subjective scorn and sarcasm from the insiders. Yep, either i got tougher or the tough got gentler. Either way, it can only be good and at least people new to Zürich/Switzerland can draw their own conclusions.

We've just watched the burning on the news (too lazy to walk into town) - how does the time relate to how long the summer is going to last????

The faster he blows, the longer and hotter the summer will be.

What was his time?

The Zurich-bred husband says that means it shouldn't be a hot, grueling summer ... well, we can hope at least

I completely forgot. I was busy uploading holiday photos to flickr and transferring money to my UK credit card to pay for my recent holiday.

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

Its all here on Wikipedia ... in fact they already have todays time down too !!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sechsel%C3%A4uten

Apparently 12.09 equates to "a medium warm summer"

I swear that I saw them putting water on the pile of wood underneath the Böögg at around 3 pm when they were also watering down the grounds.

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

This, from the swissinfo site made me laugh out loud. It is so typical to take such a custom seriously and try and analyse it. Do they feel threatened by such prediction methods ?

dave

<<However, the national weather office MeteoSchweiz poured cold water on the Böögg on Monday, saying its predictions didn't stand up to scientific analysis.

"Why should a burning cotton snowman possess good qualities for making predictions?" questioned a report by Daniela Schmuki and Andreas Weigel.

According to MeteoSchweiz it all depends on how the Böögg's pyre is constructed, the dampness of the wood, the weather on the day and above all the number of accelerants used to get the fire going.>>

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

Well yes, I watched it burn but I did not see those chilled beers!! When we asked for beer, we got ones just from under the burning snowman, I'd say..hot as the day

As for the people, being here in zurich for just the last 3 weeks, when I saw the crowd, I thought "Where were these people hiding all this time??!!" I mean for such a crowd, I would have expected to hear some noise every evening on the streets but no that was not the case! 10 p.m. and you feel the city is asleep...so I guess I should too

Yep... I live in Wollishofen (Zurich). A couple of years ago I had the misfortune of being oncall over New Years Eve (read: home and sober). It seems that every teenager for miles around converges on Landiwiese to set off their fireworks. Around New Years we get a good solid 18 hours or so of skyrockets / crackers. It definitely doesn't finish on the dot of 12...

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

On an unrelated note... what's the purpose of them squirting accellerant on the bonfire once it's burning? Is that to sneakily adjust its burning time, or just to make it burn more evenly so that the bonfire doesn't fall over?

Zurich Spring Festival

This Saturday - Monday is the Zurich spring festival. Here is the link for those that don't know about it:

http://www.swissworld.org/en/culture...ing_festivals/

Has anyone been to this in the past? Is it worth going? It's hard for me to believe that a burning snowman who's head is packed with fireworks can't be fun to watch. What better way to send out winter?
