This Saturday - Monday is the Zurich spring festival. Here is the link for those that don't know about it:

http://www.swissworld.org/en/culture...ing_festivals/

Has anyone been to this in the past? Is it worth going? It's hard for me to believe that a burning snowman who's head is packed with fireworks can't be fun to watch. What better way to send out winter?
Yes, it is definitely an experience to see at least once. Plus there is a big parade down Bahnoffstrasse and I remember the one time i went they were throwing fish into the office buildings with open windows. Those crazy guildsmen. Though, Monday is really the main day.

Re: Zurich Spring Festival

The "event" for children is on Sunday - quite cute really! They all dress up and have their own parade down Bahnhofstrasse.
The whole inner city (Bahnhofstr. / Limmatquai) is closed to traffic and trams for the main event on Monday afternoon (it's also a public holiday in Zurich town), and the Bööög (the snowman) is set on fire at 6 pm on the Sechseläuten-Wiese in front of the opera house (hence the name). Depending on how long it takes before the fireworks in his head blow it off it's going to be either a short or long summer. The whole thing is well worth seeing if you've never been before.

The baker's guild will distribute loafs at the Grossmünsterplatz on Monday, 11 in the morning. There's always a crowd there.

Re: Zurich Spring Festival

There seem to be a lot of festivals in Zurich - is there anywhere I can see when these are for throughout year as I think they are good fun and are good for taking visitors

i noticed the mention of Züri Fäscht there - and its website showed the big wheel that was erected around Sechseläutenplatz last summer. Was this put up only for the Fäscht (will have to wait till 2010) or will it return this summer? (didn't get a chance to try it out last summer )

A ferris wheel has gone up in Burkliplatz - not sure if that's the one you meant but it looks great and now I can't wait to have a go!

Re: Zurich Spring Festival

I'm pretty sure it's up there every summer too, certainly during the Streetparade in August.

Re: Zurich Spring Festival

you should defenitly go and see it. the snowman will be burn at the bellevue. if you want to see the parade and the snowman, you best watch the parade at the limmatquai. at 6 o'clock they start burning the *böög" (thats the name of the snowan), so from the limmatquai you can easily walk to the bellevue.

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

Bumping for the Children's Parade this afternoon.

Starts at 2:30 pm, ends around 5:45 pm.

The route is: Bürkliplatz - Bellevue - Limmatquai - Rudolf-Brun-Brücke – Uraniastrasse - Bahnhofstrasse - Bürkliplatz – Kongresshaus

Enjoyable for the whole family - providing it doesn't rain. It's looking good right now - so see you later

I've been told by multiple sources in addition to this forum that this is something we need to check out. So I'm planning on heading down this afternoon to see the excitement for myself...

Anybody know an optimal time to go check out the parades? I can't seem to find any times listed for the pre-snowman festivities on the websites.

I could post a last-second calendar event if there's interest in meeting up (and if I had an idea of what time to go!).

(If it gets a little windy, protect your eyes- a cinder from Böögg flew into my eye last year- ouchy)

The Zurich Flickr group "Züriflickrdrinks" is meeting after the parade at Bahnhof Stadelhofen - we'll go somewhere for a drink and talk photography and other stuff. All are welcome to join in.

If anyone is interested in meeting up to see what this parade-and-snowman-exploding event is all about, just send me an PM (before 3pm'ish). (I have chickened out of making a calendar event for this, but still curious!)
Rain, rain, go away!
