Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

Time for the bump!

Tomorrow, Sunday, 19.4.09:

Children's Parade starting at 2.30 pm at Bürkliplatz (ends approx. 3.20 pm at Kongresshaus).

Monday's Parade starts at 3 pm - this year starting from Bürkliplatz.

Note: it's a half-day public holiday in Zurich on Monday, so post offices, banks and a lot of shops in the city centre will be closed in the afternoon. AFAIK Coop and Migros will be open until 1pm.

Have fun! I guess 24 minutes this year, anyone else?

Friday's 20 Minuten was reporting that more Coops and Migros will be open than ever this year so you may not have to do the usual mad dash for your bits and bobs before 1pm. Migros City is open, for example.

It is going to burn quickly this year. My guess is 8 minutes if it does not rain, 13 minutes if it does.

12 minutes 55 seconds.

Not a bad summer coming up, then.

I am somewhat far away to have been there in person. Saw some of it via the Zurich remote control webcam. Here are some pictures that I took with the webcam.

Mathnut, Dougal's Breakfast & J.L-P discussing the finer points of "innit". It was good to see Richdog too.

12:55 and DB owes me a beer with my guestimate of 12.53.

Perhaps it's just me (I hazard it is) but I find the whole shebang a soulless affair. It's not inclusive and there's a rather empty atmosphere, except for the crowds. I didn't see one non-white guy parading, either. Weird.

Left me with a bad taste this year. The outside pocket of my rucksack was pickpocketed during the main event - my husband could see the whole thing happening but was about 10 people deep away from me in that super-sardine-packed crowd and couldn't do a thing about it.

Fortunately - the outside pocket contained only several snot-soaked tissues and a box of cranberry Riccola thanks to my streaming cold.

My phone, purse and valuables were well tucked up, snug inside the main compartment.

Well, you have been here a while and now how raving the calvinist crowd is, no?

There were a few non-caucasian faces by the way, but also remember that it is nigh impossible to join a Zunft even if your family has been living on these lands for a thousand years... it's only (with some exeptions I think) about birthright and, if you're daring, a sh*tload of money so that your children may be accepted one day... OK, maybe this is a bit over the top or ignorant, but I think it is not too far from the truth

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

I loved it, as usual - period costumes! horses! giant exploding fertility symbol! - but maybe I'm easily amused. In all fairness, being pickpocketed would have put me right off it as well.

My favorite is when little kids run out into the middle of the parade to give their dad or grandpa a flower... so cute!

Well I believe that giving the flowers is just to someone you know who is in the parade.
As for the "goons" I saw this too and would assume they are just protecting an ex swiss president or something.....didn't see any for blocher though.......also a disturbing cheer went up when he walked past where we were standing.

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

Well, I had a nice time and an older man in a costume after the parade unloaded his armful of flowers into mine - Don't know why he picked me out of the crowd

The middle-age swiss couple next to us were *very* tolerant of my three children trying to squeeze through their legs to see the horses....

But no points to the 40 something woman in the tight jeans who pushed *against* the crowd when we were trying to get across the parade to get our son to the toilets - I have to admit I was not impressed with people pushing from behind, from the front and standing in front of my kids and pram - and then having the hide to complain when I rolled the pram over their feet...

You should have discretely pushed the handle of the buggy into her bladder - maybe she was heading to the loo, too.

We were in a party where one of our mums had a buggy with her and instantly regretted it. We put her child on my husband's shoulders because she kept getting "handbag-whipped". Nightmare.

Every year I promise myself I won't go again. Next year I intend to keep to that promise.

The children's parade on the Sunday is much more sedate.

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there's a good cafe or bar to watch some or all of the festivities from? My father's coming for the weekend, and I don't know if he'll survive the crowds!

Thanks!
