Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

It's fun to get right in there- if the crowds are too much then there is the option of watching it on television.

For more info on the festivities: http://www.sechselaeuten.ch/sechselaeuten/

No TV, unfortunately! But thanks for the link. He's really not fit for standing in massive crowds, and also he's a bit of a curmudgeon when it comes to strangers.

I see you can apply for seated tickets, but I'm guessing you have to get there at some ungodly hour in the morning. Plus, I don't fancy sitting for hours without any coffee or beers to see me through!

Well, if you're serious with seating, check Cafe Felix - not sure anymore about the route they take, but maybe Cafe Sprüngli on Paradeplatz would be a possibility as well.... only difficulty is getting a seat reserved, otherwise you'll have to spend the whole day there...

Yeah, but it's pronounced "säächséélüüte". Back when my knowledge of German and Swiss German was "in development", I understood it as "Sexy Leute". Somehow, that stuck. Aww yeah!
> do not forget the difference between CH and X
> the event is Sächsilüüte
> Sexy Leute would be Sexi Lüüt

In Swiss German you could say d'Lüüt tünd lüüte and händ es Glüüt

Let's hope for a very slow-buring Böögg this year. I saw him go up in 2003, quick as anything and the hottest, most miserable summer on record.

(but watching him go up in explosions was kind of fun...)
miserable ??? The summer of 2003 was the greatest summer-season ever, just as it should be ! Should be if possible every year !

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there's a good cafe or bar to watch some or all of the festivities from? My father's coming for the weekend, and I don't know if he'll survive the crowds!

Thanks!

Yes, if the weather is nice and the weather dry try to reserve a place in the garden (lake facing part) of the Restaurant Bürgli in 8038 Zürich Wollishofen

The places around the Bellevue are overbooked and completely full anyway. And the Acqua at Enge will be overbooked already for sure.

An alternative to be considered may be the Ziegel au Lac under
www.ziegelohlac.ch

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

Ok, it's time for the annual bump... It's great weather and the Böög will probably only take 30 seconds...

I've seen the procession a couple of times, and I was wondering about the unwritten "rules" of the event. For example:
- all along the procession you see women in the crowd giving flowers to the marching men. Does it work both ways? For example, can guys in the crowd give flowers to (cute) girls marching past?
- is there a locked-down list of the guilds that can actually participate in the parade? If the national ancient brotherhood of computer geeks started a guild in Zurich, would they be allowed to participate?
- why are there no gügga music bands? Are they banned from participating? Or are they a bit too blue collar for this event?

Last year was 12 minutes, but then I don't know if that was considered fast or slow.

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

The summer last year wasn't that good (roughly 2 weeks can be called summer for 2010), but the burning time of the böögg is not really an indicator how bad
or awesome the summer will be this year.........
In 2006 the böögg was kidnapped (and released 01st of may at the helvetiaplatz), did they have any summer in 2006 ?

Re: [ZH] The Annual Sechseläuten thread [was Men in tights]

From wikipedia:

Quote:
Popular tradition has it that the time between the lighting of the pyre and the explosion of the Böögg`s head is indicative of the coming summer: a quick explosion promises a warm, sunny summer, a drawn-out burning a cold and rainy one. The shortest time on record is 5:07 minutes in 1974, and the longest in 2001 with 26:23. The 2007 explosion of the Böögg`s head (on 16 April 2007) took place 12:09 minutes after the pyre was lit, promising a medium warm summer. On 14 April 2008, heavy rains soaked the Böögg and the wood pyre materials so much that "firemen" in the style of Fahrenheit 451 had to spray the pyre with kerosene or fuel oil after initial ignition in addition to 15 liters of fire accelerant which was initially thrown on the pyre. It took 26:01 minutes for the Bööggs head to explode which indicates a poor weather summer.
On that basis, this years time is good. Glorious summer confirmed.

SF TV had a clock on it. They showed 10.56

Perhaps they started the clock late? I suppose the official website must know best.

you can look it up now

http://sechselaeuten.ch/sechselaeuten/festablauf.asp

it was corrected ! The Tages Anzeiger had it with 10.56 in the issue of today anyway. To defend the Zünfte against the media, their wines tend to be better ! At least, this time, the riders were prohibited to drink wine BEFORE the event

Hey Wolli- why do the horses run around Böögg?

It must be terrifying for them, expecially now since the space is so small with the construction going on.
