"My dear boy, no woman is a genius. Women are a decorative sex. They never have anything to say, but they say it charmingly. Women represent the triumph of matter over mind, just as men represent the triumph of mind over morals."

I usually have a different 'problem' on the trains. I usually get a free seat, but other people coming onto the train will sit anywhere else, before they sit opposite. Especially when i've got my Converse Gangsta wooly hat on!

It pays to be a dodgy looking bugger

That'll be one less attractive blonde, then.

This has all been said before: this is not Sydney, nor 'have-a-nice-day' land. Don't expect the Swiss to greet strangers like long-lost friends - even when they are long-lost friends....

Attractive blonds should never be discouraged from voicing their opinions.

Victoria, my phone has not rung yet.

Re: Why can't you look people in the eyes anymore? [aggression in Swiss society]

I'm with the swiss on this one. I will quite happily greet strangers on the mountainside, but I don't wander through town making deliberate eye contact and greeting every stranger I pass. (Even though I turn heads, and stop traffic etc etc)

Last time I did that (greet strangers) by the lake last Sunday night, I got accosted by evangelists, and engaged in a drunken theological discussion...

Re: Why can't you look people in the eyes anymore? [aggression in Swiss society]

Unlike victoria, I have found that people greet and make eye-contact a little more here, than in Sydney....(does this means I am unattractive... ..no sorry, let's keep on track)...but I have found large differences between the cities and towns. For example, where we live, saying Grüezi (miteinand) is almost a given when on a walk, but I don't do that, and experience it much less, in Zürich.

Ok. I get it. Victoria is Crocodile Dundee. Just substitute Zurich for New York.

Happens to me quite often too, specially with the 65 and above age group.. Seems they haven't realized yet that 1 of every 5 here are foreigners OR could it be that I have "don't sit here" sign on my forehead (least likely..)

I don't mind enjoying the (extra)space though!

Hello everyone

I was in the train the other day, looking for a seat and when you make eye contact with someone who's already sitting down they seem to look at you as if "what do you wan't?" why is there so much aggression here? Even on the streets it's the same!
When I get someone looking staright at me - I look back - smile and say hello/grüezi - 90% of the time I get tit for tat, that is, a smile and greeting back followed by instant look away.

Re: Why can't you look people in the eyes anymore? [aggression in Swiss society]

Quote:
Ritual: "Isch dä Platz no frei?" "Cette place est prise?" FOLLOWED by eye contact.
a) Swissie mumbles something indicating it's free barely looking up.
You take the seat. You *both* ignore each other. (If we're in the mood to chat, we'll chat, if we're not, we won't, something to do with private thoughts, busy reading a book/newspaper or just in the mood to vacantly stare out the window. It's nothing personal.)
b) Swissie speaks in full coherent phrases, makes eye contact and starts making social noises.
Jump on it! This one's not busy and in the mood for some chitchat.
Glad someone wrote this down again on here. There was a thread about this quite some months back. You need to ask "Isch da no frei?" or "Isch dä Platz no frei?" before sitting down. It was actually the first thing I noticed in terms of people sitting down in the same four-seat section as me, and I made sure to practice it with my wife.

Quote:
Out for a walk in the city:
You greet, nobody greets back.
Um, we're not out here for fun or for social opportunities.
We're busy! Going from A to B, shopping, catching the train, thinking about which route will get us fastest, in the limited time available, through whatever it is that we have planned.
Greeting is then an intrusion, an obstacle to navigation.

Out for a walk in the woods:
You greet, (guesstimate) 2/3rds greet back.
-> We're *not* busy, we're on leisure time, enjoying life etc.
-> We're busy (hiking! last bus to catch!) but doing something we enjoy.

The 1/3rd not greeting back: plain ignore them.
Where I live people only use Güezi for about four hours -- from noon until 4 pm. Before that it is various expressions for good morning, after that various expressions for good evening in Swiss German (no precise consistency, oddly enough). I actually prefer not to greet people, but about 90 percent of the time out here in my small town they do. I'd say even half of the people greet me when they arrive at the bus stop and I am already there waiting! I guess I'm the jerk who doesn't initiate it unless out for an actual walk, although I always respond. In places like Baden / Zürich, on the other hand, you will not be greeted unless you are out for a walk on the Lägern / Uetliberg or in the woods. Otherwise, when in town people carry about their own business as in every other city / larger town in the world.

I really must be oblivious -- I still have yet to notice the starring, and talked about that in another thread as well. I wonder why.

One last observation: I find John Q. Switzerland to be a bit too docile sometimes. I wonder where the righteous indignation is when some retarded wannabe rapper from the Bronx or Compton will be on the bus or the train blasting rap from his (always his) cell phone -- people will very rarely say anything. I stay quiet as well, but because I am John Q. Ausländer (Foreigner).

Despite the fact that not one of the three had anything to do with the others. I'm not in the habit of responding to several people at once in a face to face conversation, and I'm not about to change that.

Re: Why can't you look people in the eyes anymore? [aggression in Swiss society]

For when people really p*ss me off, I carry round some black and white photo's of myself and sign them making sure I have some for when people really stare. Then I hand them out, usually after that they just look rather confused wondering who I am. Rather weird, but its not rude and it gives them somthing to remember you by.

Before we get too off-topic there are many forum systems that automatically merge consecutive posts, so don't get too upset with evilshell for merging your posts. She didn't harm any of your text and just made it a bit more readable for other people - hardly a reason to get upset with her. She writes the reason for the edit as a politeness in case anyone wonders what she was doing editing the messages.

Try Hipnotizador Kenny Craig's "look into my eyes..." technique next time. Swiss will love you :-)

So, what, I should wait until someone else posts, and then they won't get merged? It is a completely arbitrary decision.
