Jonny, keep your hand on the door as you hold it open for them, forcing them to stop or walk into your arm, forcing eye-contact. A nice loud 'Bitte' should do the trick

Ah bless, yet more crass generalisations about the whole country and the whole population, now it seems we are all unsmiling robots...British expats might want to call us Daleks from now on

Hi
I was born in Switzerland and lived over 30 years in Switzerland.
I actually agree, that there is this particullar agressiv behaviour (often).
I myself feel disturbed by that behaviour sometimes (even if I'm "used" to that).
As I allready posted another place... : I feel like thats a certain way that becomes more and more common because there are more and more people in Switzerland. "Swiss are historically not used to be 'exposed' to 'external' people." (As someone white and blond meets people from a tribe in the deepest jungle

Absolute crap.
Switzerland has always been exposed to foreign people crossing the alps to trade, since very olden times.

I'm Swiss and have on both sides of my family people from "abroad". They came to work here over hundred and fifty years ago and it has not stopped till now. Some from Catalunya, some from then Grand Duchy of Baden, some from Bavaria. And from that mix, many moved around the world to live in Italy, US and to then Imperial Russia to work, some came back, some stayed. We are still in contact to almost all those relatives.

In Zurich - Seefeld many people do not make eye contact, so what. Most of them are foreigners who might not be used to it or are shy to use German, naturally grumpy people or they are just a tad autistic :-). Why bother?

When I go for a walk to the nearby forest, everybody greets nicely. Sometimes we chat even if we do not know each other.

Maybe it is my charisma and just being me, but you get what you give.

Fridolin the missionary was also Irish who via a pit stop in Germany, came telling his tales of angels and virgin births to the good people of the Linth valley.

"Who is this dude?" I hear you say. He's the one and only human figure to grace a cantonal flag, that of Glarus.

Hello everyone

I was in the train the other day, looking for a seat and when you make eye contact with someone who's already sitting down they seem to look at you as if "what do you wan't?" why is there so much aggression here? Even on the streets it's the same!

If I could get your idea's on this topic would be nice to see what you all think of this or has it ever occurred to you and you haven't dared to say anything?

Thanks for your replys in advance
It's those walls and fences you can see around estates. It's the same in average Swiss mind But as with the real life fences, you can hop over them after a year or two of constant familiarization process punctuated by cakes or BBQ together every now and then Unless you meet somebody from Zurich :P

That used to be considered fact but has come under dispute. There seems to be evidence that he was born either in Arbon (Bodensee) or in the area of Elsass-Vogesen.

Well, well, those people who have to study for their passports here come in quite handy. Thanks for the infos.
As those Irish were so keen on leaving traces on our homeland, why did they not influence our folk music? THAT would have been a real favour instead of this "virgin birth" thing. Then again who knows, maybe the fear of that possibility lead to the chemical industry in Basel?

As I'm more into the future than into history: Irish guys here, the bloke made it on to a Swiss canton flag (therefore on to every car registration number) - what are you gonna leave us? The server-content of EF?

Re: Why can't you look people in the eyes anymore? [aggression in Swiss society]

When I was in Zurich at the first time, I felt the people on the streets or in trains had very cold and rude behavior towards me, a foreigner tourist. But, another hand, the old ladies and man always greeted me on the streets. That was great. In Geneva, it was a little different, maybe a latin language, French, contributated to this differential. So, I didn't have many difficults on being accepted in that Society, so it was easy to study the political, social and cultural issues to be well integrated in that city. Even many people would like to exchange informations about my culture.
BTW, is there a thread in EF al least to envoy Christmas and Happy New Year' s votes for not being rude?

Took the train the other day from Geneva to Yverdon - people helped us with the heavy suicases both to get on and off the train, chatted and smiled - even the train driver was super friendly (we spoke English and everyone thought we were both Brits) - couldn't have asked for nicer welcome. Conductor said his wife is American? Wondered if on EF ?
