missing NYC food - bagels & chicken soup?

Anyone know if there is a place that sells proper, New York city style bagels and chicken noodle soup? Was back in the states over christmas and did not realize how much I missed these!

There is a webshop called Peacefoods (http://www.peacefoods.ch/) that has bagels and Globus does sometimes, but they are nowhere close to the giant ones you get in NYC, rich and chewey!

Also what about a nice chicken soup - Jewish Penecillin! Boullion is just not the same, and I really never see this even in the gourmet stores. I'd even go for a tin of Campbell's chicken & noodle.

Any thoughts would be most welcome!

Bagels: American Bakery at the Zurich main station, one level down. Great plain and stuffed bagels. Chicken soup? Get used to making your own. Even Campbells chicken noodle soup in a can has been banned here since the middle ages.

There's a place called New York Food Company opposite platform 1 of Oerlikon train station, beside Coop. I have no idea how authentic the food is or is not.

Re: missing NYC food - bagels & chicken soup?

We buy good bagels in Coop, they come prebaked and we just baked them fresh in the morning. Not the read deal, I know, but pretty close.

Geneva and Nyon have "American Market" stores, http://www.glocals.com/CityGuide/?re...&categoryID=64 they seem to have online shopping as well http://www.americanmarket.ch/ , so try them for the can soups. If they do not ship you could just make a trip to the store and stock up.

I agree making your own chicken soup is way better than a prefab one, but I understand not everyone feels like making stuff on your own all the time.. Just be prepared the prices are insane.

ETA: they seem out of stock on ton of things but who knows how quickly they update their site.

The Americanmarket does ship, and it comes very quickly I got my order the next day and they do carry campbells soups.

FYI - tried there once, it is shockingly bad food. small portions and huge prices, nothing close to US!

Re: missing NYC food - bagels & chicken soup?

No Greek restuarants that serve awesome chicken soup? That is one of the staples of Greek restaurants in NYC. Second question, are there not any kosher restaurants that would serve this (if it is a Jewish staple, I only know of the Greek kind)

A recipe just in case....much better than Campbells.

I have baked bagels. It was not too difficult. I thought they weren't great but they disappeared. The members of my family will eat anything .

I make chicken soup on a regular basis as I cannot buy any commercial soups because I am allergic to MSG (E 621) and most soups contain that. (I can find tomato soup without MSG). The chicken stock can be used for other recipes. I can't use onion on account of the dogs (I always freeze some soup in case one of the dogs is sick and onion is no good for dogs). Chicken soup is really easy to make and freezes well. The best recipe I have is from Japan, of all places. It calls for putting mushrooms in the soup. Strange but true. Clear soup is boring. You can buy egg noodles that cook quickly and them add them to the soup, or wild rice goes nicely. I take all the chicken off the bones and put it back in the soup so it is a meal.

which is why I assumed he/she is missing it and posted here... though I admit, price and size is something you need to compromise on to be happy in Switzerland, hopefully not taste though...

I'm guessing the OP's disparaging remark was regarding the place opposite Oerlikon station- deservedly so. It is absolutely terrible.

Glad to hear the American bakery in Zurich HBF's good. I'll try the bagels there this week. I want an onion bagel *sigh*

The New York restaurant in Oerlikon. Its more like the Swiss interpretation of what a New York restaurant might be like. I was not expecting the exact thing, but this was at the extreme opposite of the spectrum!

Re: missing NYC food - bagels & chicken soup?

the other day I stopped in a Swiss restuarant in NYC (in Soho, i think). It didn't seem very Swiss to me other than the Rivella on sale. Though, I didn't eat there just saw the Swiss flag so had a quick look so was curious

Re: missing NYC food - bagels & chicken soup?

I hear you! Soup's one of my favorite foods and I don't like many of the canned ones either. These aren't American at all but I've heard this place is pretty good though I've never been (in German):

and I wanted to try this one out but they hadn't opened yet (also in German):

Hiltl's got fresh soup every day, which you can also take away. Pain Quotidien on Loewenstrasse and Roemerhof also do soup, though I've only ever had it at their cafes in Brussels.
