Next time back home, buy them at HEMA, Etos or Kruidvat. Just try out which ones work for you.
All true, but no plans to go to the Netherlands any time soon or even this year (I hardly visit the Netherlands)

Then Konstanz is probably your best bet

Having to buy my 1st reading glasses (aging is a b****) and absolutely no clue about prices and all such. Are people still going to Germany for glasses, and if so any recommendation for something in/near Konstanz?

And since they are reading glasses I really don't care about huge choice of diff frames, real glass, plastics etc.
I don't want to sidetrack too much, but have you had your eyes checked by a professional recently?

It can be tempting to buy any old pair of reading specs at the shop yet still be unhappy with the result. Mr Wishes has figured out through trial and error that his eyes are not equally bad at reading, so the shop-bought reading glasses only help a little. He needs to get to the eye doctor and find out the proper level for each side and then probably have some readers made, or do a DIY pair using two sets of cheap readers with different strengths .

That's a good point.

To EdwinNL:

But if you decide not to go to an Augenartz, Fielmann will do the basic tests for something like 25 CHF - you can walk in off the street.

With the results from that, you can choose to buy your glasses from Fielmann in Germany or here, or go elsewhere.

Frames start at about 25 CHF in Fielmann and lenses start cheap but go up in price if you want glass rather than plastic, anti-glare lenses and so on.

Re: Price of glasses!

I do agree with all the advice about a proper test and glasses made for me, but thing is to me that I only need them for the ingredients in store, when reading letters or being behind the computer I have zero problem, so for now it would really just be a couple of minutes per week which is why I don't care so much about what type of glasses, by the time I do need glasses to read the mail or a book it indeed is beyond doubt to me time to get a proper test again and have glasses that are made to my demanded specs for best result (and to avoid wrecking my eyes any further with wrong glasses)

I had a test 3 yrs ago which was all fine, it is just that I notice lately that I start to move packages around in an attempt to get a better reading on them and glasses are better than giving all the impression I'm drunk :P

First time around it is probably a good idea to go to the doctor and get the full service, especially if you are getting on, just in case there is something else going on. They will give you the prescription and you can then buy the glasses where every you wish.

And no I don't go to Germany, I go to my local option, because I get good service. He offers three sets of lenses for the price of one - two normal plus a set for my sunglasses and he simply replaces the lenses in my current frames, no issues. So I leave three pairs of glasses with the set I'm going to use daily, a backup pair and a tented pair for the sun. He also got me an appointment with the eye doctor within 24 hours, when he discovered I had a cataract, which resulted in me having it removed a few days later.

Re: Price of glasses!

The standard markup is 10 times the cost, and for the wholesaler it's 3 times the cost. I was in the business many years ago. Knowing this I bargain very hard and usually get a 35% discount. He still makes a good margin and I get good service with maintenance once a year when they need cleaning or tightening.

I would check VIU out. In my experience they beat Fielmann for service and for quality.

Re: Price of glasses!

I go to the ophthalmologist every 12-18 months and have a full exam. This year, I got my first reading glasses and progressive lenses. I’m 64 - but in some people with mild myopia, the need for reading glasses isn’t as acute.

But I have a fairly uncomplicated prescription, so I buy my glasses online. This year, I used zennioptical.com, and I’m very happy with the price, quality and the correction is perfect. Probably not for everyone, however. But, for example, I paid about $70 (US) for progressive lenses.

I pay 2-3K here. And despite trying several of 'Switzerland's best' I still can't read with the damn things.

Maybe visit https://www.mueller-optik.ch, I'm always satisfied with their service and the prices are not over the top as far as I remember...

Good luck! Iíve read really good reviews and terrible ones of zenni. Iíve been pleased with my glasses, though. I donít like to drive in the progressives, so I keep a spare pair of glasses in my car for driving, especially at night.

Re: Price of glasses!

Dad just paid 1000 EUR for progressive lenses at our (overly expensive) optometrist in Singen (Germany) last week.
But my parents know the owner and so they usually buy there ;-)

200 for the frame and the rest for the Zeiss glasses.
That was the medium-price option.

There were some cheaper ones and some higher-end ones.
