I'd love to see a few recipes of things you make. I know stuff like sugar is good for exfoliating and yoghurt is good for reducing skin redness, and of course cucumber or teabags on the eyes. Do you have any specific things you really like to use?
And of course the millions of ways to use lard has been thoroughly explored

Re: What face gels/cosmetics/toiletries do you use?

Does anybody know if I can find the Queen Helena's Mint Julep mask in Zurich..or in switzerland for that matter..? I am basically looking for something that would work as a pore minimiser..the stuff Clinique and Estee Lauder sell seem like they're loaded with Silicon and do nothing except give the illusion that its working

Re: What face gels/cosmetics/toiletries do you use?

ha! sorry, i haven't checked back on this thread in a bit!
anyway my absolute favorite is to mix some sandalwood powder and rosewater and make a mask. it smells great, feels so good and exfoliates really well. sugar and lemon juice is another great one. i have ended up spending so much on products and then when i mix some recipes up it usually ends up making my skin feel even better than the products.

This is a good independent testing site to find out about products:

http://www.testbeste.ch/index.cgi?ac...eKategorien=17

Some inexpensive ones seem to be liked by the testers, which is good news.

Re: What face gels/cosmetics/toiletries do you use?

We are kinda new here & our supplies are running low.

I have searching high and low for facial wash, face moisturisers & hair conditioners.

May I know where you girls buy these from? And what are they call in German? I cant seem to find any which has to be ridiculous.

Danke!

I will start checking for these ingredients.

Re: What face gels/cosmetics/toiletries do you use?

Yeah, the world has known about parabens and phtalats for ever, though. It's only now it is becoming a spread info. Parabens and phtalates are evil, in cosmetics, in kids toys, in wet wipes, you name it..

If I am not sure, I just go for Body Shop (shampoos, cosmetics, etc..) that clearly states No parabens, no perfume, no color, no phtalates (containers, etc), no preservatives, no silicone. Regular French supermarkets sell some great cosmetics, which is organic and sans all those evil things, cheap.

Re: What face gels/cosmetics/toiletries do you use?

About 15 years ago, my skin, very gradually, became allergic to almost every skin care/cosmetic item I tried. My dermatologist suggested that I try the Avène range, which is both alcohol and perfume free, and I must say that it suits my skin perfectly. The Avène range is found in all pharmacies here and the rest of Europe. Products are based mainly on skin care as opposed to cosmetics. There are testers for the complete range of skin care products, so you can try out which one suits your skin best. And the cherry on the cake? - the products are not at all expensive. Last week I bought a 200 ml tube of cream which cost CHF23.40 and which will last for months. In fact, I've saved a fortune since allergies stopped me using my regular cosmetics/skin care products!

I do wonder how they keep their creams and lotions from going rancid without preservatives? Or are there 'good' preservatives?

I find that using products labelled as 'all-natural', 'bio' or 'organic' tend to result in my skin reacting with an outbreak of dermatitis - anyone knows why?

Actually, yeah - it may well be the fact that these hippie products very often contain things that are irritants. Natural but still aggressive essential oils, herbs, you name it. Bio does not mean hypoallergenic. The absence of irritants is the best, I go for mild things (and it is usually bio since those products are paraben free, phtalates free, color or other crap free). The only biatch is, no parfume. Stinks. But it is true, one has be dilligent in watching out for the expiry date, not dip fingers in the pot, or if so, use up the container quickly.

I get dermatitis from super oily things, and then not hydrating creams, as well, depends on what reaction (to what) the dermatitis is. Since I have seborhoic skin, it would be certain chemicals or lack of hydration, or no oils or too much oil. One wonders...lard would be the best, really.

Re: What face gels/cosmetics/toiletries do you use?

I am so-so on Body Shop stuff. My absolute favourite skincare is the Greek brand Korres. Their body milks and butters smell delicious and feel great all day (especially in the very dry air here in Switzerland).

They stock it here in Globus but it is expensive. Natch. They have some stores in other cities (saw one in Barcelona last year) but not here in Lausanne yet.

I try to stock up whenever I am lucky enough to be in Athens. Just bought their Vanilla Plum body butter on my most recent trip and it is yummy, yummy.

Re: What face gels/cosmetics/toiletries do you use?

When we first cut out all parabens etc a couple of years ago I went to the Body Shop thinking I could get all I wanted there but I could not find any products without any of the nasties. I was rather pleased when they started their rainforrest range recently which is rather good shampoo etc. They have really improved their range of "evil thing" free products.

Yeah, some of their things are not so userfriendly...I was not too big on their baby range, although my friend swears by it. Their banana shampoo turned my head into one giant yellow ball of knots, their hemp shampoo as well.

That's exactly the range I was talking of, the only thing I would reproach is the presence of perfume, but wow, they smell so good I can so deal with it. Lush is also growing on me, I love their body butters, especially the in-the-shower body conditioner, one just lets it melt in hot water and glide it over. Skips the after shower care, so fast. One has to watch the tub afterwards, though, slippery.

I had a craptastic experience with The Body Shop several years ago (nasty rash!) and have not entered one of their stores since.

Today I was at Carrefour and noticed that Garnier has a new line called Ultra Doux. It says no paraben on the front.

I also noticed a shelf with several Dove hair products. I'm not interested in those, but did see that some people are desperately (why?) searching for them. I'll find that thread and post them my iPhone snap.

Most vitamins are anti-oxidants which are natural preseratives. One of the best is Vitamin E which is found in oils like Avocado and Wheatgerm. I am an Aromatherapist and make my own cleansers, moisturizers (not make-up). If I make up a larger quantity (like to last 3 to 6 months) I will add some wheatgerm. Jojoba is also a natural preservative and can be added to prolong shelf-life. You could also get Vit E capsules and squirt it into your blend.

Someone mentioned sugar scrubs - I use Salt (but whatever is cheaper is fine) with Avocado, pumpkin, macademia oils along with whatever Essential Oils I am in the mood for. Great as a whole body scrub - but stand in the tub -its messy!! Then shower off and you get exfoliated and moisturised in one go - you skin feels like satin - amazing. Even better if you have someone to help scrub your back .

Do you give how-to classes or perhaps sell your products?
