How do you give away your Britishness?

Or any other nationality-ness, for that matter.

I, for example, sprinkle salt over my butter (yes, I know you can get salted, but hubby and daughter won't touch it!!), put HP sauce on anything and everything fried or fast-foodish, milk in tea ( goes without saying and only drink black tea)
and saying : "Wirklich? Das ist sehr interessant!" throughout any Swiss German
conversation.
I can probably think of more, but what about you??

I'd go along with you, as far as to say.
"Really? This is very interesting"

Yup, right with you there, Castro.

And who mentioned drinking?? Nah, that's not at all British......

Last week, one of my students informed me that the British are known for their
"bingeing"

Thanks a lot...

Yeah! what's wrong with people. Poms, Limeys, Wops, Pakis, Dagos, Taffys, etc, etc, I could go on and on. The problem is, that no one in a foreign country likes to be continually referred to in this manner. It can be in good humour, but more likely than not it is intended as a racial slur. I am very thick skinned, but if I lived in Aus, my skin might just wear a mite thin. Also, whinging, is something, that in my experience, Aussies are very good at.

But it never fails to give away my nationality. It's just slightly more subtle than walking around in a Leprechaun suit, eating Tayto, drinking Guinness, and roaring "top o' the morning" to all and sundry.
In truth, some people do mistake me for being British, because apparently my accent isn't strong enough to be immediately distinguishable.

My giveaways would be my fondness for tea and Club Orange, and referring to my mother as Mammy. Can't think of any others at the moment.

Re: How do you give away your Britishness?

- love cheddar cheese with strawberry jam and lamb with mint sauce
- counting in English
- when I hum to myself I usually hum the tune of "Deck the halls with boughs of holly" but with the lyrics from the Timex-watch ads in the 60's or 70's (....tick-a-tick-a-Timex tra-la-la...)

By telling a rather dark joke and then having to explain your way out of the blank, shocked stares by saying that it was just for a laugh, lighten up Hausi.

Ditto for any form of irony or sarcasm - it just doesn't work here.

Cheese and jam - love that!!

And ditto for counting in English, especially coins at the checkout.(The assistants always look at me sadly as I mutter away to myself in a foreign language)
Early morning cuppa - can't function without that, and a hot- water bottle in winter - how sad is that??!!

Re: How do you give away your Britishness?

By being overly friendly. I'm one of those "will chat to anyone and everyone regardless of language barrier!" types. It works well in Australia. Not so well here. But positive news is my German just got described as "wunderschon" today! So nyah, it has positive benefits anyway!

By thinking mayo and chips are the most revolting combination EVER. The humble potato chip should never be so desecrated. Tomato sauce. Or, if there's nothing else- salt and vinegar.

By taking home made lamingtons to my neigbour on Australia day :| They didn't get it. Philistines.
